Buying, selling, bartering, and trading are not part of the model. You can participate through the BuyNothing app or a local Facebook group, subject to that community’s boundaries and rules.
What happens in a Buy Nothing group?
Members offer things they no longer need, ask for things they need, lend belongings, or share help. The exchange is free: the Buy Nothing Project’s group description and rules prohibit buying, selling, bartering, and trading. Its stated aim is not only to pass objects between neighbors, but also to build relationships through giving, receiving, and gratitude.
That makes a Buy Nothing group different from a conventional marketplace or swap group. A member might offer a household item, request a tool for a short-term task, or share time and practical help. There is no requirement to give something in return.
How can you take part?
The Buy Nothing Project describes two participation routes: its app and local Facebook groups. Neither route is guaranteed to be equally active everywhere; activity and access depend on the community.

How do you find and join a local Facebook group?
- Open the Buy Nothing Project’s registered-groups directory to look for a group in your area, or search Facebook for “Buy Nothing” plus your neighborhood, town, or city.
- Check that the group serves your neighborhood, then request to join it.
- Answer the group’s membership questions. Some groups ask for a general location to confirm that you are within their boundaries.
- Read the group’s pinned posts and local rules before posting. The Project asks participants to join only one local Facebook group at a time.
Local admission practices and boundaries can differ. If you are unsure which group covers your address or what a local rule means, ask the group’s admins.

What if there is no Facebook group nearby?
You can still participate through the BuyNothing app. The Project says the app allows people to take part where a Facebook group does not exist, without waiting for a local volunteer to launch one. The app also supports private communities. Its joining guidance explains the available routes.
What are the rules—and what can vary locally?
The central rule is that gifts are freely given. The Project’s official 10 Rules prohibit buying, selling, bartering, trading, advertising, and marketing in the group. Its group-description template also says not to solicit cash.

Local leaders may set additional rules and expectations. Review the pinned information in the group you join, and check with its admins before posting if an item or request seems uncertain under local rules.
The 10 Rules also state that participation is at each participant’s own risk and that the Project and volunteer admins do not assume responsibility for loss, damage, illness, or injury related to group activity. That is a liability statement, not a detailed safety checklist. As practical judgment, inspect items before using them and choose a handoff arrangement that feels appropriate to you.

Why does the Project describe it as a gift economy?
The Buy Nothing Project emphasizes connection and gratitude alongside sharing. In an August 6, 2025 organization statement, it described its purpose as renewing community relationships through “abundance, trust, and genuine connection” in a hyper-local gift economy. The idea is that neighbors’ time, skills, and generosity matter as well as the objects exchanged.
The Project says its first Buy Nothing Facebook group was created on Bainbridge Island, Washington, in July 2013. Its directory also gives a count of registered groups, but does not date that figure, so it should not be treated as a current total. The official material cited here does not quantify Buy Nothing-specific waste avoided, household savings, or social outcomes.

Is a Buy Nothing group useful for your finances?
It can provide a way to request or receive something without paying for it, or to pass along an item you no longer need. But the Project’s material does not establish a typical amount saved, a measured environmental benefit, or how active a particular local group will be. Consider it a free community-sharing option, not a guaranteed source of specific items or a measurable savings plan.
