8080 Books is Microsoft’s publishing imprint for ideas at the intersection of science, technology, and business. Microsoft announced it on November 18, 2024, saying it would cover professional publishing costs and donate remaining revenue to nonprofits through Microsoft Philanthropies. That is the company’s stated model; its announcement and imprint page do not report audited donations, recipient names, or measured impact.

What is 8080 Books?

Microsoft introduced 8080 Books as an imprint intended to publish original research, ideas, and insights where science, technology, and business meet. The company said it hoped to publish work by both Microsoft-affiliated authors and thinkers outside the company. The launch announcement was coauthored by Steve Clayton, Microsoft’s vice president of communications, and Greg Shaw, senior director of CEO communications. Microsoft’s November 18, 2024 announcement describes the launch and its initial titles.

The name refers to the 8080 microprocessor, which Microsoft says helped lay the foundation for its earliest software breakthroughs. The company also notes that 8080 is the final four digits of its corporate headquarters phone number.

How does the nonprofit revenue model work?

Microsoft said it would pay the costs of publishing professionals and donate the remaining revenue to nonprofits through Microsoft Philanthropies. The current 8080 Books page describes the imprint as nonprofit publishing. In practical terms, the company has described an intended flow of revenue after publishing costs—not a published accounting of proceeds.

The official materials reviewed do not give donation totals, name recipient organizations, or provide independently measured results. Readers therefore cannot use these statements alone to determine how much money has been donated or what impact it has had.

What does 8080 Books publish?

The imprint’s stated interests include technology and the future; business process and productivity; and societal priorities involving law, ethics, and policy. Its official page presents books as a format for sustained arguments, precise knowledge, and ideas that can outlast short-form communication. It also says the imprint aims to shorten the time between a final manuscript and publication and to experiment with technology in the publishing process. These are aims, not published performance results.

Launch titles

Microsoft’s first announced title was No Prize for Pessimism by Sam Schillace, identified in the announcement as Microsoft’s deputy chief technology officer. Microsoft said the book was available on launch day, November 18, 2024. The second title announced was Platform Mindset by Marcus Fontoura, described at launch as planned for later in 2024; that was a launch-era plan, not a current release date.

Catalogue and buying books

The official imprint page now shows a catalogue extending beyond those launch announcements, including Run Toward the Fire and Showstopper!. It provides retailer links, including Amazon links for those titles, and also lists Barnes & Noble and Bookshop options. Retailer links establish places to check, not current stock, edition, format, price, shipping terms, or affiliate arrangements. Confirm those details with the retailer before buying.

Can authors submit manuscripts?

At launch, Microsoft said it was not accepting unsolicited manuscripts and mentioned evaluating out-of-print titles that remained relevant. The current imprint page describes interest in new and nontraditional writers and thinkers, but the available statements do not establish a current submission policy. Authors should check the official 8080 Books page for its latest guidance rather than assume the launch-era policy still applies.
