What InvestGame’s $20.5 Billion in 2020 Game Deals Actually Covered

InvestGame’s $20.5 billion estimate covered acquisitions, investments and IPOs in the first nine months of 2020. Its later full-year report put the total at $33.6 billion across 664 transactions.

InvestGame’s $20.5 billion figure was an estimate for acquisitions, investments and IPOs in the video-game industry during the first nine months of 2020—not the full year. InvestGame’s later FY2020 report put the full-year total at $33.6 billion across 664 transactions. The figures use different reporting periods, and the interim estimate also depended on how announced deals and undisclosed values were treated.

What the $20.5 billion figure counts

GamesBeat reported InvestGame’s estimate in October 2020 as a combined total for video-game acquisitions, investments and IPOs from January through September. It was not an M&A-only tally or a measure of money spent solely on game studios. InvestGame’s annual-report overview groups closed gaming deals into three broad areas: Gaming, Platform & Tech, and Esports & Other. GamesBeat’s October 2020 account describes the interim figure and its coverage; InvestGame’s annual-report overview describes the report’s broad organization.

The coverage described by GamesBeat extended beyond developers and publishers to platform and technology companies, esports, hardware, retail, outsourcing and related businesses. Gambling companies were outside its definition of games. Because the estimate combined different transaction types and businesses, it should be read as InvestGame’s tracked deal-value estimate, not as a single category such as studio acquisitions.

Why it is not the full-year 2020 total

InvestGame’s later FY2020 report, published in 2021 and summarized by GamesBeat, reported $33.6 billion across 664 transactions for the full year. It also counted 18 video-game IPOs worth $2.8 billion. Those are year-end figures, not a revision that changes the first-nine-month reporting period of the $20.5 billion estimate. GamesBeat’s year-end summary reports those figures.

The two headline totals should not be compared as if they covered identical periods or necessarily used identical inclusion rules. The available reporting establishes the interim and annual figures, but does not provide a transaction-by-transaction reconciliation between them.

How deal status and undisclosed values affected the estimate

GamesBeat said the $20.5 billion estimate counted deals that were publicly announced and deals that had closed. It also noted that InvestGame could estimate undisclosed deal values or leave them out. The headline therefore does not mean every transaction had a publicly confirmed price.

Microsoft’s announced purchase of ZeniMax for $7.5 billion had not closed when GamesBeat described the estimate, so it was excluded from the $20.5 billion figure. That example shows why an announced headline transaction should not automatically be added to the interim total.

How to interpret InvestGame’s methodology

InvestGame’s later methodology document says its general approach is to track closed video-game-industry transactions unless otherwise noted, with target companies required to have core business operations related to video games. It excludes pure gambling, betting and non-gaming blockchain or Web3 companies, and groups transactions into M&A, private investment and public offerings. Its glossary defines control M&A as a change of control involving at least 50% ownership, and minority M&A as a sale of a minority stake. This later document helps explain InvestGame’s terminology; it should not be taken as proof that every category and rule was applied identically to the October 2020 interim estimate. InvestGame’s 2020–2022 report outlines that later methodology.

InvestGame cautions in that report that its private data comes from sources believed reliable, but that accuracy and completeness cannot be guaranteed. For that reason, the careful description is that InvestGame estimated or tracked the deal value. The total is not an independently verified measure of every dollar invested across the industry.

What the headline tells readers—and what it does not

  • The $20.5 billion figure covers the first nine months of 2020, not the whole calendar year.
  • It combines acquisitions, investments and IPO activity, rather than measuring acquisitions alone.
  • The later full-year report put 2020 activity at $33.6 billion across 664 transactions.
  • Deal announcements, closing status and estimated or omitted undisclosed values affect how the figures should be read.
  • The total is an attributed estimate, not a definitive accounting of all game-industry spending.

When comparing InvestGame figures with another report, check the reporting period, whether deals had to be closed or could be announced, the transaction categories included, how undisclosed values were handled, and which businesses qualified as part of the video-game industry.
