Contemporaneous coverage of a 2021 tour of Intel’s Fab 42 identified three next-generation chip families: Meteor Lake for consumer computing, Sapphire Rapids for servers, and Ponte Vecchio for high-performance computing. The photographs documented products or packages in a factory setting—not proof of retail availability, production readiness, or benchmark performance.
Which chips did Intel show at Fab 42?
A secondary account of CNET reporter Stephen Shankland’s tour named three chip families. The original CNET gallery is not independently available in the sources cited here, so the image details are best attributed to contemporaneous coverage rather than treated as independently verified observations.
| Chip family | Intended market or workload | What the coverage establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Meteor Lake | Consumer computing | Contemporaneous coverage identified the family; Intel’s official manufacturing press kit later associates the Meteor Lake codename with Core Ultra processors. Intel manufacturing press kit |
| Sapphire Rapids | Xeon server processors and data centers | The contemporaneous account identified it as a server chip family. Contemporaneous coverage |
| Ponte Vecchio | High-performance computing | The account connected it with plans for the Aurora supercomputer. Contemporaneous coverage |
These are different product categories, not three processors competing for the same job. The tour’s images do not establish measured performance, and no benchmark figures were reported in the cited sources.
What was Fab 42 making in 2021?
Fab 42 is on Intel’s Ocotillo campus in Chandler, Arizona. Intel described the factory as fully operational in 2020 and said in an August 2021 announcement that it produced microprocessors using Intel’s 10nm manufacturing processes. Intel manufacturing press kit

#1 Best Overall
- Next‑Gen Platform Support: Compatible with Intel 800 Series Chipset‑based motherboards with LGA1851 Socket enabling PCIe 5.0/4.0 and high‑speed DDR5 memory (up to 7200 MT/s).
- High‑Performance Core Configuration: Features up to 24 cores (8 P‑cores + 16 E‑cores) for demanding gaming and creator
- Ultra‑Fast Boost Clocks: Reaches up to 5.5 GHz max turbo frequency for top‑tier responsiveness and performance
- Built for Enthusiasts: Unlocked for performance tuning when paired with Intel Z‑series chipsets, making it ideal for overclockers and power users.
- Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
That is dated context about the factory, not confirmation that each named chip family was being made there on the same process. A factory-tour photograph also cannot, on its own, establish that a pictured package was a functioning processor, ready for mass production, or available for purchase.
How the tour fits Intel’s Arizona expansion
In March 2021, Intel announced an estimated $20 billion investment plan for two additional factories at the Ocotillo campus. Intel’s Arizona factory announcement The figure describes the announced plan; it does not show that the new factories were already operating or made the products shown during the Fab 42 tour.

- Game Without Compromise. Play harder and work smarter with Intel Core 14th Gen processors
- 20 cores (8 P-cores plus 12 E-cores) and 28 threads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 770 included
- Up to 5.6 GHz with Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 gives you smooth game play, high frame rates, and rapid responsiveness
- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
Intel also presented its 2021 IDM 2.0 strategy as combining its own factories, third-party manufacturing capacity, and new foundry services. Intel’s IDM 2.0 announcement That was the company’s description of its strategy, not an independent assessment of its manufacturing position.
What the Fab 42 photos do—and do not—tell you
- They identify product families in a manufacturing setting: Meteor Lake, Sapphire Rapids, and Ponte Vecchio, according to contemporaneous coverage.
- They do not provide performance evidence: the available accounts contain no measured benchmarks.
- They do not establish commercial status: a photographed package is not proof of production readiness, a shipping product, or retail availability.
- They do not prove which factory or process made each chip: Intel’s 2021 statement about Fab 42’s 10nm production should not be extended to every chip shown.
Meteor Lake’s later product-history connection
Intel’s official press kit links the Meteor Lake codename with Core Ultra processors. Intel manufacturing press kit That connection helps explain why Meteor Lake mattered to consumer-computing coverage, but it should not be read as proof that the specific packages shown at Fab 42 were commercial Core Ultra products. The cited sources do not establish which laptop models are currently available.
