Indigo Agriculture announced on October 26, 2021, that it had acquired Soil Metrics, a provider of agricultural soil-carbon and greenhouse-gas modeling. Indigo said the deal would strengthen measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) for its Carbon by Indigo farming program and could support broader modeling services. The announcement did not disclose a purchase price, and it described intended applications rather than proving which were later delivered.
What did Indigo Ag acquire when it bought Soil Metrics?
Indigo acquired Soil Metrics’ modeling capability and expertise in agricultural soil systems, according to Indigo’s October 26, 2021 announcement. Soil Metrics was described as a commercial-scale provider of environmental modeling for agricultural soils, including soil carbon and greenhouse gases. Its technology was based in part on university-developed models such as Daily Century (DayCent); it was modeling technology and services, not a consumer soil-testing device.
The companies had already worked together on scientific standards for Indigo’s Carbon by Indigo program. Indigo said its agricultural partner network and resources could help scale Soil Metrics’ biogeochemical modeling, while Soil Metrics’ capabilities could improve modeling for existing and future customers.
Why did Indigo say the acquisition mattered?
Indigo framed the deal as an investment in soil-carbon science and in the measurement, reporting and verification system used by Carbon by Indigo. MRV is the process of estimating or measuring environmental outcomes, documenting them, and checking that reported results meet an applicable standard. In a carbon program, credible MRV matters because it underpins claims about climate benefits and any credits or premiums tied to those claims.

Indigo also connected the modeling to financial mechanisms intended to reward farmers, including traceable sustainability premiums and verified ecosystem credits. That describes the rationale in the announcement; it does not establish a particular farmer payment, credit price, or financial return from the acquisition.
How does soil carbon get measured?
Soil carbon can be assessed using field measurements, models, or a combination of the two. Soil Metrics’ capability, as Indigo described it, centered on modeling agricultural ecosystems. Models such as DayCent use scientific representations of ecosystem processes to estimate how factors such as farming practices and environmental conditions affect soil carbon and greenhouse-gas outcomes. Modeling is not the same thing as directly sampling every field, and the announcement does not specify the exact data inputs, sampling protocols, uncertainty ranges, or verification procedures used in any particular project.

- Soil pH preference list for over 450 plants included
For anyone evaluating an agricultural carbon or sustainability program, the acquisition announcement alone is not enough to judge its measurement quality. Relevant details include the methods and data used, how results are validated, which gases and outcomes are included, the geographic and crop coverage, and how farmers are compensated. The release provides no comparative performance results against other MRV approaches.
What applications did Indigo announce?
Indigo said Soil Metrics’ modeling could be applied to soil-carbon dynamics, nitrous oxide and methane emissions, registry-issued agricultural carbon credits, and low-carbon commodities. These were potential uses and stated intentions in the 2021 announcement, not independently verified evidence that every application was subsequently launched or expanded.

- Comprehensive Soil Analysis: Liquid soil test kits offer a comprehensive analysis of essential soil parameters, including pH, ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Having all these measurements in one kit provides a holistic understanding of the soil's fertility and health.
- Customized Fertilizer Recommendations: With data on pH and nutrient levels, liquid soil test kits help users apply the right type and amount of fertilizers, optimizing plant growth, and preventing over-fertilization, which could harm both plants and the environment. Whether its for lawns, garden, grass, plants, vegetables, turf, flowers, compost trees vines ornamental landscape house plants or hydroponics you will be able to get the results you want.
- Time and Cost-Effective: Liquid soil test kits are relatively quick and easy to use, saving time for gardeners and agricultural professionals. Compared to sending samples to a laboratory, these kits provide rapid results, allowing for prompt action. Additionally, they are cost-effective for routine testing, making it feasible to monitor soil health regularly.
- Optimal Plant Health and Yield: By knowing the soil's pH and nutrient levels, gardeners and farmers can fine-tune their agricultural practices to create an environment conducive to optimal plant growth. Adequate levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are essential for healthy plant development and higher crop yields.
- Accurate and Precise Results: Liquid test kits are designed to provide accurate and precise measurements when used correctly. They are calibrated to detect specific nutrient levels, ensuring reliable data for informed decision-making in plant nutrition and soil management. You get a total of about 140 test. which is 40 test for each parameter and about 20 or so for nitrogen
Indigo’s Global Head of Carbon, Chris Harbourt, said: “Getting carbon right is essential, and will set a standard for opportunities ahead.” Soil Metrics CEO Brad Justice described the companies’ joint aim to develop tools and benchmarks for quantifying and rewarding farmers’ climate efforts. These statements communicate the companies’ outlook; they are not independent assessments of model quality or results.

Indigo’s announcement said Soil Metrics was founded in 2019 by Colorado State University Professor Keith Paustian and colleagues, and that its work drew on over two decades of peer-reviewed agricultural-ecosystem research. It also said Paustian would join Indigo as an advisor. These background details are attributed to Indigo’s announcement.

- 【7-in-1 Features】This is a 7-in-1 multi-function soil tester. Our soil tester quickly measures soil moisture, pH, temperature and light intensity, and its fertility function helps you take better care of your plants. With this device you can measure the soil moisture, pH, temperature and light intensity for your plants and with the EC and TDS functions you will know when it is time to water the soil.
- 【Large Screen & LCD Backlight】The Soil Moisture Meter has a large LCD display with white backlight that clearly shows the numerical parameters in both daylight and darkness. It is powered by 4 x 1.5V AAA batteries (not included) and warns you when the batteries are low. The large screen allows you to read the data more easily and clearly, so you no longer have to struggle with hard to read data!
- 【Fast and accurate measurement】With the latest 2025 probe technology, it can quickly and accurately measure soil pH, moisture, temperature and soil fertility, and measure the TDS and EC function of water quality. Combined with the light intensity analysis of the integrated light sensor, the device can help you determine the optimal watering time, control acidity and temperature, and ensure that your plants receive sufficient light for science-based plant care.
- 【Easy to use】Simply insert the probe about 10 cm deep into the soil, wait 10 seconds and you will receive precise readings. (Note: The soil tester must not be used directly to measure liquids. If the soil is too dry or hard, do not force the probe in. Moisten the test area slightly before measuring and wait 10 minutes to avoid damaging the device).
- 【Optimal readability】The display has an intuitive design with clear numbers and intuitive symbols that make it easy for even beginners to understand the minimum values. The extra-large screen makes reading the data clearer and easier. The displays of the water and soil analyser are backlit in white so that they are also easy to read at night.
The announcement disclosed no acquisition price, other financial terms, projected revenue, or quantified performance result. A later Indigo newsroom listing includes carbon-market activity in 2026, but it does not establish Soil Metrics’ present identity, service availability, pricing, or customer terms. The 2021 release therefore supports describing what Indigo said it acquired and intended to do, not making a current service recommendation.
