The acquisition closed on July 2, 2025, so Neri’s interview remarks about closing being “weeks away” are historical, not a current status update. His claims about competitive advantage were strategic arguments, not independent proof that HPE would outperform Cisco.
What Neri said the Juniper deal would make possible
In his interview with CRN, Neri described the proposed combination as a way to bring together more of the networking stack: silicon and infrastructure, operating systems, software, services, and security. He argued that HPE could pair Juniper’s networking technology with HPE’s servers, storage, and GreenLake cloud services to offer customers a more complete edge-to-cloud portfolio.
That breadth was central to HPE’s pitch. Rather than framing the opportunity as networking equipment alone, Neri presented it as a joined-up offer for customers building and operating modern networks and AI infrastructure. HPE estimated in its January 10, 2024 transaction-call transcript that the deal would expand its edge and networking total addressable market by 30%, to $118 billion. Those figures were HPE’s estimate of market opportunity, not an independent market measurement.
How AI fits into HPE’s networking strategy
Neri linked the deal to both AI infrastructure and the use of AI to operate networks. He said Juniper’s QFX fabric needed modernization and acceleration, and that HPE intended to bring it together over time with HPE Slingshot, which he said was being used to scale tens of thousands of GPUs. The interview did not give a completion date for that integration; it described a roadmap, not a finished product.

HPE’s later portfolio materials name the QFX5140 switch for inference clusters and edge AI, illustrating the physical networking layer the company is promoting. That product example does not establish that every customer needs the switch or that the combined portfolio has a performance advantage over Cisco. The interview offered no apples-to-apples comparison or independent test results.
Neri also made a broader point about employees’ ability to work alongside AI. “Everyone needs to have a minor in AI, including myself. All of us. Because you have to be able to coexist with AI in your jobs,” he told CRN. This is Neri’s view about workforce readiness, not a measured forecast that every occupation will require the same AI skills.

How the Cisco comparison should be understood
Cisco was the named competitor in Neri’s account of HPE’s opportunity. His argument was that a wider HPE-Juniper stack—networking alongside compute, storage, cloud services, and security—could provide customers with an alternative to Cisco’s networking offer. That is a strategic positioning claim. The available interview and HPE materials do not establish that HPE-Juniper outperforms Cisco, will displace it, or offers a directly comparable product set in every market.
For a practical comparison, buyers would need to assess the specific use case and products: campus and branch networking, data-center fabrics, service-provider networks, or AI infrastructure; the management and automation tools involved; and how mature each vendor’s integrated portfolio is. A broad portfolio description alone cannot settle those questions.

What Juniper and HPE partners were told to do
Neri’s immediate advice to partners was to learn which products fit which customer use cases and market segments, and to prepare for substantial enablement. He expected the companies eventually to have one partner program with different certifications and compensation levels suited to different business models. For partners, that meant building product and solution knowledge rather than assuming that every HPE or Juniper offering would fit every customer.
Subsequent milestones show that integration took time. HPE said on September 30, 2026, that it had completed combining its global sales teams, while partner-ecosystem and commercial-systems integration remained priorities. HPE had announced that its programs would be unified under HPE Partner Ready Vantage beginning November 1, 2026; on the September 30 date, that start date was still in the future. The company also reported that only around 10% of HPE Aruba Networking and Juniper partners overlapped before the acquisition, a company-reported figure it cited as cross-selling potential.

What has changed since the interview
HPE officially completed its acquisition of Juniper Networks on July 2, 2025. That closes the gap between the interview’s proposed-deal context and the current ownership status, but it does not mean every product, partner, or business system was integrated at once.
At its September 30, 2026 investor day, HPE said it was targeting $800 million in annualized cost synergies by fiscal 2028. The target had risen from $450 million when the deal was announced and at least $600 million at close, according to HPE management. These are targets, not savings already realized. HPE’s account of progress and future plans is management’s own; it does not independently establish competitive outcomes for customers.

Another company-reported figure cited in HPE’s January 10, 2024 transaction call concerned Juniper’s Mistified business: then-Juniper CEO Rami Rahim said its annualized order run rate exceeded $1 billion in Q3 2023, less than four years after passing $100 million. This is Juniper’s reported order-run-rate metric, not revenue or a guarantee of future results.
What John Chambers advised—and what he did not
Neri specifically said John Chambers did not advise him on how to compete with Cisco. He described Chambers, Cisco’s former CEO, as a supportive leader and friend, then relayed Chambers’ advice about recognizing inflection points and taking risks while they are happening.
“You’ve been bold to take some risks along the way because you’re looking at these inflection points, and if you can anticipate them and catch that inflection point right at the time it’s happening you have the ability to potentially do something very interesting for customers and shareholders.”
This is Chambers’ advice as recounted and quoted by Neri in the CRN interview, not a separate direct interview with Chambers.
