Horacio Pagani’s answer to why someone might choose his cars over a Ferrari or Lamborghini was not that they are objectively better: he called all three marques’ cars extraordinary and said the decision is emotional. Scarcity and a made-to-measure experience are part of Pagani’s appeal, while his production figures show a company deliberately limiting output. The numbers come from interviews in different years, however, and do not establish Pagani’s current 2026 production.
Pagani’s production figures depend on when he was speaking
In a Quattroruote interview published on 26 April 2010, Horacio Pagani said the company had made 120 cars in ten years and produced about 20 cars annually. Those are statements from 2010, not a current annual rate.
In a separate evo interview published on 4 March 2025, Pagani said, “We produced around 40 cars in 2023. Our target for 2024 was 50 cars.” The 50 was a target for 2024, not a figure for 2025 or 2026, and the interview does not establish whether that target was met.
| Interview-era statement | What it says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Horacio Pagani, Quattroruote, 26 April 2010 | 120 cars in ten years; about 20 a year | Historical cumulative and annual figures reported in 2010. |
| Horacio Pagani, as quoted by evo, 4 March 2025 | Around 40 cars in 2023; a target of 50 for 2024 | The first is a reported production figure; the second is a past target, not a confirmed result. |
| Horacio Pagani’s estimate, reported by evo, 4 March 2025 | Around 500 cars built since 1998, including test and development cars | An approximate cumulative estimate with test and development vehicles included, not an audited total. |
The figures describe different periods and may use different definitions of what counts as a car. They do not yield a reliable current annual rate or a definitive present-day cumulative total. The same 2025 interview says Pagani wanted to preserve exclusivity, adding: “We are happy with our level in terms of supply and demand dynamics. We don’t need to sell more cars.”

Why choose Pagani instead of Ferrari or Lamborghini?
Asked this directly in 2010, Pagani praised Ferrari and Lamborghini as makers of “extraordinary” cars with long, glorious histories. His answer was that buying this kind of car—including a Pagani—is more an emotional decision than a matter of logic. In the context of that interview, he said producing only about 20 cars a year appealed to customers who value exclusivity and want “a made-to-measure suit.” The English phrasing here is a translation of his Italian answer in Quattroruote.
That is a statement of Pagani’s view of the purchase, not a technical comparison or proof that Pagani is superior. The interviews do not provide standardized, same-year data on the three brands’ production, prices, performance, reliability, ownership costs, or resale values. A buyer weighing them should not treat the low-volume positioning alone as evidence of better value or investment potential.

- Scarcity: Pagani’s low output and its stated desire to remain exclusive are central to the company’s positioning, but the cited interviews do not supply comparable current production totals for Ferrari and Lamborghini.
- Personalization: Pagani’s “made-to-measure suit” analogy describes the appeal to some customers. It does not establish that competing marques do not offer personalization.
- Emotional preference: Pagani’s own answer is that there is no simple logical reason that determines the choice. Brand history, design, exclusivity, and personal attachment can matter to a buyer, but the interview does not rank them for every customer.
From the Zonda project to Utopia
Pagani Automobili says it was officially established in 1998. Its official company history identifies C8 as the Zonda project code, C9 as the Huayra code, and C10 as Utopia. That timeline helps distinguish the projects: the 2010 Quattroruote conversation referred to the then-upcoming C9, while the later evo interview discussed production decades after the company’s founding.
Pagani’s background also connects the company to the marques in the comparison: Horacio Pagani worked for Lamborghini before founding his own company. That history gives context to his acknowledgment of Ferrari and Lamborghini, but it does not turn his comments into an independent assessment of the brands.
