When stolen cryptocurrency reaches a centralized exchange, the exchange may flag the deposit, restrict the account, or respond to a valid legal order. Investigators can use the public blockchain to follow the transfer and seek exchange records that may connect an address to a customer. A deposit does not automatically reverse the blockchain transaction or guarantee that the victim will recover the money.
The practical outcome depends on whether the assets remain at an identifiable exchange, how quickly the victim reports the theft, the exchange’s procedures, available evidence, cooperation across jurisdictions, and the stage of any legal case.

What can happen after the deposit
The transaction becomes an investigative lead
Most public blockchains preserve a visible record of transfers. If stolen coins move into a centralized exchange, the deposit creates a recognizable point in that record: investigators can see the sending address, receiving exchange address, asset, amount and transaction time. That information can help establish a timeline and identify where the funds entered a service that keeps customer records.

The exchange may review or restrict the account
An exchange can ask for information about the source of a deposit, place limits on trading or withdrawals, or otherwise restrict an account under its internal controls. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center says exchanges freeze accounts based on internal processes or legal process. Coinbase, as one exchange example, describes limited circumstances that can include a court or government-authority order and sanctions requirements.
There is no universal rule that every exchange automatically freezes every deposit associated with a reported theft. Exchanges apply their own compliance systems, terms, risk assessments and legal obligations. A restriction may affect only withdrawals, a particular asset or the whole account, and the exchange may not disclose details while an investigation is active.
Investigators may obtain records and follow onward transfers
When funds are still at an exchange, investigators may seek records that connect the deposit address with a customer account. They can also follow later blockchain movements. If the holder withdraws the assets, the trail may continue through additional addresses, exchanges, mixers or other services, although each step can add delay and legal complexity.
In a U.S. Department of Justice case involving an Ohio couple, investigators traced funds across blockchain addresses. Tether transferred 325,060 USDT from a traced address to a law-enforcement-controlled wallet under a federal seizure warrant. That example shows how an issuer or service can act after receiving valid legal authority; it is not a promise that every exchange or token issuer will do the same.

A freeze, seizure, forfeiture and restitution are separate events
A restriction can stop spending while facts are checked. A seizure under a warrant places assets in government-controlled custody. A civil forfeiture complaint asks a court to decide whether property can legally be forfeited. Restitution or another distribution to victims is a later question and may require a separate process.
Even when authorities locate and seize cryptocurrency, the cited cases do not guarantee that all of it will be forfeited or returned to a particular victim. The legal status of the assets, competing claims, court orders, criminal proceedings and the amount ultimately recovered all matter.
Five outcomes readers commonly confuse

Why reaching an exchange can help—and why it may not
What improves when an identifiable exchange is involved
- The blockchain supplies a transaction hash, addresses and timestamps that can be checked independently.
- An exchange may hold account-opening, identity, device, login and transaction records that are not visible on-chain.
- Internal compliance controls may limit withdrawals while an account or transaction is reviewed.
- Investigators have a specific service to contact for records or legal process instead of tracing only anonymous addresses.
What can make recovery harder
- The holder may withdraw or transfer the assets before a restriction is imposed.
- Funds may move through several exchange accounts or other services, increasing the number of records and jurisdictions involved.
- Cross-border transfers can require cooperation with foreign authorities and service providers. The FBI notes that overseas movement can create particular challenges where anti-money-laundering controls are weaker.
- The exchange may be unable to act without sufficient evidence, a valid order or a request that satisfies its procedures.
- Crypto transactions are generally irreversible on the blockchain. Reporting a theft does not give a victim a technical “undo” button.
What determines the likely path
There is no reliable universal freeze time or recovery percentage. Outcomes vary according to several factual and legal questions:
- Are the funds still at a recognizable service? Assets sitting in an account that investigators can identify are generally easier to target than assets dispersed across new addresses.
- Can the deposit be tied to the theft? A clear transaction hash, matching amount and documented timeline help investigators establish provenance. A bare allegation without transaction details is less useful.
- Will the exchange act internally or require legal process? Some cases begin with compliance controls; others require a subpoena, warrant, court order or request from an authorized agency.
- Can records connect the address to a person? On-chain analysis shows movement. Customer records and other evidence are needed to establish identity and intent.
- Where are the people, exchanges and assets located? Domestic cases may involve fewer procedural steps than cases spanning multiple countries, although neither route guarantees recovery.
- What stage has the case reached? Tracing, an account restriction, seizure, a forfeiture complaint and a victim-distribution process have different standards and timelines.
What a victim should do immediately
The FBI’s IC3 guidance uses the instruction “Do not wait.” Speed cannot guarantee a freeze, but a prompt, complete report gives investigators useful identifiers before more transfers occur.

- Contact the exchange through its official website or app. Use the exchange’s published support or law-enforcement reporting channel, not a phone number or direct message supplied by a stranger. Report the suspected theft and ask what documentation it requires.
- Provide precise transaction information. Include the transaction hash, sending and receiving addresses, blockchain or network, asset, amount, date and time (with time zone), the exchange name and any related account or deposit details.
- Report to local law enforcement. Ask for the report or case number and preserve it. Some exchanges request that number before escalating a matter.
- For a U.S.-connected incident, file an IC3 complaint. Include wallet addresses, transaction hashes, dates, amounts, exchange names, communications, websites or apps used and a chronological account. IC3 says complaints may be analyzed and referred to law-enforcement or partner agencies; it does not conduct every investigation itself or provide an investigation-status service.
- Notify other relevant services. If the funds reached a second exchange, stablecoin issuer or payment service, report the same identifiers there as well. Each service may have different procedures.
- Secure accounts that may still be exposed. Change passwords from a trusted device, enable multifactor authentication, revoke suspicious sessions and contact your email, mobile carrier and financial institutions if they may be involved. Do not delete evidence while securing access.
Evidence checklist
Keep original files where possible and make read-only copies for submission. Useful material includes:
- Wallet addresses, transaction hashes, network names and block-explorer records.
- Exchange statements, deposit and withdrawal histories, account identifiers and support-ticket numbers.
- Exact dates and times, including the time zone, plus the asset and quantity involved.
- Emails, texts, direct messages, phone numbers, websites, app names and usernames.
- Screenshots showing balances, warnings, payment instructions or account changes.
- The sequence of events: how access was obtained, when the transfer occurred, where the assets moved and whom you contacted.
- Every message from someone offering to trace or recover the funds.
Do not alter screenshots or edit transaction data. Investigators can verify blockchain information, and inconsistent records can complicate an otherwise credible report.
Beware of “recovery” scams
People who lose cryptocurrency often become targets a second time. The FBI warns that recovery scammers may demand an upfront fee, provide inaccurate tracing reports or impersonate exchange employees to obtain login information. A private person cannot issue a seizure order, force an exchange to release another customer’s identity or guarantee a refund.

- Verify exchange support through the address you type yourself or the official app.
- Report the attempted recovery fraud as additional evidence.

The 2016 Bitfinex theft
In a 2022 U.S. Department of Justice announcement, prosecutors described approximately 120,000 bitcoin stolen in the 2016 Bitfinex hack. The same announcement said law enforcement had seized more than $3.6 billion in cryptocurrency linked to that hack at the time. Those are historical case figures, and the dollar values reflect the publication context; they are not a recovery-rate statistic.
The 325,060-USDT seizure
In a 2025 DOJ case, 325,060 USDT—valued at approximately $325,060 at the time—was transferred from a traced address to a law-enforcement-controlled wallet under a federal seizure warrant. It demonstrates a specific legal intervention involving a traced address, not a typical recovery amount or standard exchange response.
A civil forfeiture complaint involving more than $225 million
Another 2025 DOJ filing concerned more than $225 million in cryptocurrency allegedly tied to investment-fraud proceeds. A complaint is a request for judicial action based on allegations. It is not a final forfeiture judgment and does not promise distribution to victims.

Jurisdiction, timing and realistic expectations
The primary public guidance and examples here come from U.S. agencies, and exchange policies differ by country, company, asset and facts. A U.S. report may be referred to federal, state, local or foreign partners, but referral is not the same as an immediate investigation or recovery.

Blockchain transfers can occur quickly, and the ledger generally cannot be rewritten. Reporting early preserves the best chance of presenting a clear trail, yet no source establishes a guaranteed response time, freeze probability or recovery amount. A victim should therefore pursue reporting and account security while preparing for the possibility that the assets have moved beyond an immediately identifiable exchange.

Can an exchange reverse the stolen crypto transaction?
Not by changing the public blockchain. An exchange may restrict an account or transfer assets under appropriate internal controls or legal authority, but a victim’s report alone does not reverse an on-chain transaction.
Does a frozen account mean the victim will get the money back?
No. A freeze can preserve assets during review. Seizure, forfeiture and any restitution or distribution require additional legal steps, and the final amount may be less than the original loss.

Report what you have as soon as possible, including screenshots, exchange messages, dates, amounts and wallet addresses. Explain which details are missing; do not guess. Investigators and exchanges can tell you whether additional records are needed.
How do I know whether a person offering recovery help is legitimate?
Treat unsolicited guarantees, upfront-fee demands and requests for credentials as warning signs. Use only verified exchange and government contact channels, and never share private keys or login codes.
