If your energy supplier changes ownership, your account does not automatically close, your tariff does not automatically change, and you do not necessarily need to switch. The outcome depends on what actually happened: the supplier may still be trading under new ownership, it may have stopped trading and had customers transferred, or an administrator may be running it. Read the notice and check your contract before assuming which applies.
First, identify what kind of change has happened
“Taken over” can describe several different events, and they do not have the same effect on your account. Check the notice for the legal supplier named, whether it says that supplier has stopped supplying your home, and whether it identifies a new supplier or an administrator.
| What happened | What it means for supply and account handling |
|---|---|
| Ownership changes while the supplier continues trading | The company behind the supplier has changed, but that alone does not establish that your account has closed or that your tariff or contract has changed. Check the specific notice and contract; there is no universal outcome established for every deal structure. |
| The supplier stops trading and Ofgem appoints a supplier of last resort | Household customers continue to receive energy and are moved through Ofgem’s supplier-of-last-resort process. The new supplier or, in some cases, the failed supplier’s administrator deals with account balances and debts. Ofgem explains what happens when a supplier ceases trading. |
| An administrator takes over the existing supplier | Under the exceptional Special Administration Regime, the supplier continues to operate and supply is not disrupted while the administrator considers options such as rescue, sale, or transferring customers. This is not the same as an ordinary acquisition. Ofgem’s supplier-failure guidance describes the distinct process. |
Will your account or tariff change after a takeover?
Do not assume either that everything stays exactly as it was or that a new contract has started. The available guidance does not establish one rule for all UK ownership transactions where the same licensed supplier keeps trading. The effect depends on the deal and your customer contract.
For a concrete but case-specific example, in 2018 OVO acquired the Spark brand and operating company. Separately, after Spark Energy Supply Ltd ceased being a supplier, Ofgem appointed OVO to take on its customers. In the arrangement Ofgem described, customers continued to be billed by Spark and contacted by Spark customer-service staff, while energy was supplied under OVO’s licence. Ofgem’s statement that customers would continue to be billed by Spark applied to that arrangement, not to acquisitions generally. Read Ofgem’s 27 November 2018 explanation of the Spark and OVO arrangement.

What to check in the supplier’s notice
Use the notice and your existing contract to establish what, if anything, is changing. If details are missing or unclear, ask the named supplier in writing to confirm them.
- The legal name of the supplier responsible for supplying your home, and whether the supplier named on your current account is still supplying your premises.
- Whether your account number or online login is changing, and how to access bills and account records.
- Your tariff, contract terms, and contract end date; ask explicitly whether any of these are changing.
- Where future bills will come from and which customer-service contact details to use.
- Whether your payment mandate and any account balance are changing or being carried over, and who is responsible for them.
If online access or account records may change, keeping a copy of your latest bill and correspondence is a useful recordkeeping step. Ofgem specifically advises taking and keeping a meter reading in its supplier-failure guidance because access to old account records may be lost; that advice is not an ownership-change requirement. See Ofgem’s guidance for customers whose supplier has failed.

Do you need to switch supplier?
No—not merely because ownership changed. First check your contract and the supplier’s notice to see whether anything relevant to your account has changed. If you decide to leave, follow the switching guidance for your customer type.
