Graduating does not automatically cancel or convert your Discover student credit card. Discover says the account keeps its existing terms, conditions and status, and you can continue using it after graduation. Update your personal and financial information with Discover, then review your own account terms before deciding whether to keep the card or pursue a different one.
Does Discover cancel or convert your card after graduation?
No. Discover says a student card keeps the same terms, conditions and account status when you graduate. Its Student Chrome FAQ also confirms that graduates may continue using the card. Discover does not describe graduation itself as an automatic cancellation or conversion to another product. Discover’s graduation guidance was last updated January 9, 2026; the Student Chrome FAQ addresses continued use.
What should you update with Discover?
After graduation, update your income, housing situation, email address and mailing address if any of them have changed. Discover recommends keeping these details current. Updated information may make you eligible for a credit-line increase, but it does not guarantee one; graduation alone is not an assurance of a higher limit. Discover’s Student Chrome FAQ describes the possible increase as dependent on updated information.
Should you keep the card open?
Keeping an established account open may help preserve a longer credit history and keep available credit in your utilization calculation. Discover presents these as potential benefits, not guaranteed changes to an individual’s credit score. The sources do not quantify what closing the account would do to a particular person’s score, so weigh your overall credit picture and account terms rather than assuming a fixed result. How to decide whether the card still fits
Graduation does not require you to switch cards. If you are considering another card, compare the benefits and costs with your own spending and account terms.
- Annual fee: Discover lists a $0 annual fee for the Student Cash Back and Student Chrome cards shown on its student-card page. Check your account’s terms for the details that apply to you.
- Rewards: Student Cash Back has rotating categories that require activation. Student Chrome offers gas-station and restaurant rewards up to a combined quarterly spending cap; both cards describe 1% rewards on other purchases. Confirm current rewards terms with Discover, since offers and terms may change.
- Interest: Check your current APR and consider whether you usually pay in full. Rewards do not erase the cost of carrying a balance; Discover recommends paying on time and paying in full when possible.
- Credit profile: Include the possible value of maintaining the existing account in your decision, without assuming that keeping it open or closing it will produce a specific score outcome.
Discover says it reports student-card activity to the three major credit bureaus. On-time payments and paying the balance in full when possible are part of the issuer’s responsible-use guidance. Discover’s student-card information lists the card features and guidance; your individual account agreement governs your terms.
