Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a U.S. FDIC-insured bank fails, the FDIC generally makes insured deposits available by arranging for another bank to take them over or by paying depositors directly. The standard coverage limit is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. Any balance above the applicable limit is not guaranteed by deposit insurance; it is handled as a claim in the failed bank’s receivership.
What happens immediately after a bank closes?
The FDIC takes on two distinct roles: it acts as insurer for covered deposits and as receiver for the failed bank. As receiver, it handles the bank’s assets and debts, including claims for deposit balances above insurance coverage. The FDIC describes both roles in its Deposit Insurance FAQs.
Insured funds are generally made available through one of two resolution routes:
| Resolution route | How you access insured deposits | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Another insured bank assumes the deposits | You access the assumed deposits through the acquiring bank. | You may need to establish a new account with that bank. It is not required to keep the failed bank’s rates or account terms. |
| Direct FDIC payment | The FDIC pays insured balances directly if no bank assumes the deposits. | The FDIC says its goal is to make deposit insurance payments within two business days, but that is a target, not a guarantee for every account. |
These are the two routes outlined on the FDIC’s Payment to Depositors page. A determination can take longer when an account needs additional documentation, including certain trust arrangements or brokered deposits.

How much of your money is insured?
The standard limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category. The limit applies to the combined deposits a person holds in the same category at that bank, not separately to every account. Coverage includes principal and interest accrued or due through the date the bank fails, according to the FDIC’s Understanding Deposit Insurance guidance.
- Different branches of the same bank: They do not provide separate coverage limits.
- Different insured banks: Deposits at a separate FDIC-insured bank generally have a separate limit.
- Different ownership categories: Qualifying categories can receive separate coverage, but each category has its own rules.
Categories include single accounts, joint accounts, certain retirement accounts, trust accounts, employee benefit plan accounts, business accounts, and government accounts. For example, joint-account coverage generally calculates each co-owner’s share across all joint accounts at the same bank; the FDIC states a $250,000 limit per co-owner for that category. Trust coverage has eligibility and beneficiary requirements, so simply counting names on an account is not enough to determine coverage. See the FDIC’s Are My Deposit Accounts Insured by the FDIC? for category-specific details.

What should you do if you have multiple accounts?
Organize your deposits by insured bank, legal owner, account balance, and ownership category. Then use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) or request a coverage determination if the arrangement is complex. Account titles and category eligibility can affect the result, particularly for joint and trust accounts.

The FDIC pays the insured portion under the deposit insurance process. Any uninsured excess becomes a claim against the failed bank’s receivership. As receiver, the FDIC collects or sells assets and settles claims, but recovery of uninsured money is neither guaranteed in full nor necessarily immediate. The FDIC explains the receivership process in When a Bank Fails: Facts for Depositors, Creditors, and Borrowers.

Which products count as deposits?
Checking and savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit at an FDIC-insured institution are deposit products, subject to the applicable limits and ownership-category rules. Mutual funds, annuities, life insurance policies, stocks, and bonds are not FDIC-insured deposits, even if a bank sold or held them. The FDIC lists examples in its Deposit Insurance FAQs.
Can the acquiring bank change your account terms?
Yes. The FDIC’s Your Insured Deposits brochure says the original deposit contract is considered void when the bank fails, and the acquiring institution is not obligated to preserve the former bank’s rates or terms. The brochure says depositors may establish a new account with the acquiring institution or withdraw some or all funds without penalty.
What FDIC insurance does not cover
This explanation applies to deposits at U.S. FDIC-insured banks. It does not establish the rules for credit unions, which require separate NCUA coverage information. It also does not mean that every financial product associated with a bank is protected: only qualifying deposits receive FDIC deposit insurance.
