Closing your first credit card can lower your credit score, but it does not automatically do so—and it does not instantly erase the account’s positive payment history. The most immediate risk is that your total available credit falls. If balances on your other cards stay the same, they then make up a larger share of your remaining credit limits, which can raise your credit utilization and may lower your score. How much, if at all, depends on your entire credit profile and the scoring model.
That possible score effect is only one part of the decision. A fee-heavy card, unfavorable terms, or concern that access to credit could lead to unaffordable debt may be good reasons to close it. This guidance reflects U.S. consumer credit reporting and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) guidance; it is not a point prediction or a lender-specific underwriting rule.

Why closing a card can affect your score
Credit scores are calculated from information in your credit reports, and different scoring models and versions can evaluate that information differently. A card’s age may matter as part of credit history, but the account’s available credit can also affect how much of your revolving credit you are using. When you close a card, its credit limit is no longer available to you. If you have balances on other cards, those balances may represent a higher share of your remaining total limits.
How utilization changes
Credit utilization is the amount of credit you are using compared with the credit available to you. For a simple illustration, suppose you have two cards with limits of $2,000 and $8,000, and a $1,000 balance on the second card. Across those limits, the balance is 10% of $10,000. If the first card is closed and the balance and other limit stay unchanged, the balance is 12.5% of the remaining $8,000. Those figures illustrate the arithmetic only; they do not predict a score change or account for how a particular scoring model evaluates your reports.

The CFPB advises keeping credit use low and describes no more than 30% of the total credit limit as expert advice. That is not a guaranteed scoring threshold: being below it does not promise a particular score, and crossing it does not establish how many points a score will change. The central question is how much available credit disappears relative to the balances and limits that remain.
Why “first card” is not enough to calculate the effect
Your first card may be your oldest revolving account, but that fact alone cannot establish the size or direction of a score change. The effect depends on your broader report—including other accounts and balances—and on the score being used. FICO is one brand of credit score; it offers multiple versions, and other scoring models exist. The CFPB says closing a card can decrease a score, while emphasizing that the impact varies with a person’s full credit profile.

The reviewed official guidance does not give an average point loss, a probability that closing a first card will lower a score, or a guaranteed recovery timeline. A claim such as “closing your oldest card costs a set number of points” would overstate what the available guidance establishes. You can identify a possible utilization change from your limits and balances; you cannot calculate a universal score result from the phrase “first card.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes the account’s history disappear when it closes?
No. Closing the account does not instantly wipe its positive payment history from your credit report. The CFPB says positive payment history may continue to be reported after an account is closed. It also explains that credit reporting companies commonly use length of credit history as a scoring factor. That means closing and immediate removal of the account’s history are not the same event.

Keep this distinction clear: an account can be closed while information about it remains on a report. The CFPB’s guidance does not provide a universal date on which a closed account will stop appearing or a guaranteed score effect when that happens. Do not treat closure as an instant reset of your credit history, or assume that the account will remain for a particular period based on this guidance alone.
Decide whether keeping the card is worth it
There is no universal rule to keep an old card open solely to protect a score. Compare the potential effect on available credit with the card’s cost, terms, security, and role in your debt management. The CFPB identifies fees or poor terms that outweigh a card’s benefits, avoiding unaffordable debt, and not planning to apply for credit soon among circumstances in which closing may make sense.

Reasons to consider closing
- The cost outweighs the value. If fees or poor terms outweigh the benefits you receive, retaining the card just for its age or limit may not make financial sense.
- Closing supports safer debt management. If having access to the account could make it harder to avoid debt you cannot afford, reducing that temptation can matter more than a possible score effect.
- You do not expect to apply for credit soon. The CFPB includes not planning a near-term credit application among situations in which closure may be a reasonable step. That is a consideration, not a guarantee about how a future lender will assess you.
Reasons to weigh before closing
- The limit is substantial relative to your other available credit. Removing a large limit while balances remain elsewhere can increase the share of your remaining credit in use.
- You are relying on the account’s credit access. Consider whether losing that available limit would leave you with less flexibility if expenses arise. Borrowing to preserve a score is not a substitute for deciding whether the account is useful and affordable.
- You can manage and monitor the account safely. If you keep it open, the CFPB recommends monitoring statements for unexpected charges and possible identity theft. An old account should not be ignored simply because you rarely use it.
What to check before you close your first card
Use the following checks to understand the trade-offs and avoid overlooking an outstanding balance or an account-reporting error. They can clarify your decision, but they cannot predict a point change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Review the limits and balances on your cards. Compare the total available limits with the balances that would remain if this card were closed. Use the same utilization idea throughout: balances divided by available credit. A larger reduction in limits with unchanged balances means a larger increase in that share.
- Compare the card’s costs and terms with its benefits. Consider fees, terms you find unfavorable, and whether keeping the account would complicate your effort to avoid unaffordable debt. Include the value of access to the account, not only its age.
- Consider your plans for applying for credit. If an application is coming up, the CFPB’s guidance makes timing one factor to weigh. It does not establish a universal waiting period or guarantee how a lender will evaluate your application.
- Read the cardholder agreement and check the balance. The agreement and issuer can explain account-specific terms and closure procedures. Closing an account does not cancel an outstanding balance: continue making payments on schedule, and be aware that interest may continue to accrue.
- Contact the issuer and follow its process. The CFPB says a cardholder can generally request closure by contacting the issuer and following up in writing. Keep a record of your request and check the issuer’s instructions for any remaining balance or account requirements.
- Review your credit reports afterward. Check that the account information is accurate, including whether a card you closed is still reported as open. If you find inaccurate information, the CFPB recommends reviewing your reports and disputing errors.
What to expect after closure
There is no reliable universal point estimate or timetable to apply to every closed first card. A score may change because the closure changes available credit and utilization, but the size and timing depend on the consumer’s full report and the scoring model. The CFPB’s advice describes a possible decrease, not an automatic one; it does not promise that any effect will be minor, temporary, or recovered by a specific date.

Keep the practical follow-up separate from score speculation: make required payments on any remaining balance, check statements or issuer communications, and review your credit reports for accuracy. If a report contains an error, dispute the inaccurate information rather than assuming the score itself explains what happened. A score can also differ across models, versions, and the information used to calculate it.
