A manufacturer’s closure can make a product warranty hard to use, but it does not automatically erase every possible route to repair or compensation. Check who issued the warranty, whether a separate service contract names another provider, what the seller may be responsible for, and whether the company is in bankruptcy. The contract terms and applicable state law matter.
Start by identifying which promise covers the repair
A product’s written warranty and a separately purchased service contract are different agreements. The written warranty should identify the warrantor and explain what it will do for a covered defect, such as repair, replacement, or refund. A service contract has its own provider, claims administrator, coverage rules, and repair process. One company’s closure does not by itself establish what another company must do.
Gather the warranty, receipt, product-registration details, repair records, and any service-contract paperwork. Look for the legal names and contact information of the manufacturer or warrantor, seller, dealer, contract provider, and claims administrator. The FTC’s warranty guidance recommends keeping the written warranty and receipt.
Who might still be able to help?
The retailer or dealer
Contact the seller and explain the defect, the purchase date, and the warranty status. The FTC advises consumers to contact the seller and then the manufacturer if the seller does not resolve a product problem. That is a useful first step, not a guarantee that the seller is liable for every manufacturer warranty or must pay for every repair. A service-contract provider or administrator
If you bought an extended warranty or service contract, read the agreement and file a claim with the entity it names. Do not assume the manufacturer backs the contract: it may be a separate promise made by a retailer, dealer, insurer, or other provider. The FTC explains that service contracts cost extra and are separate from the product’s included warranty in its guidance on extended warranties and service contracts.
For auto service contracts specifically, the FTC says that if the administrator goes out of business, the dealer may have to perform under the contract; if the dealer goes out of business, the administrator might have to fulfill it. Those are contract-dependent possibilities, not a rule for every service plan or product. Check the agreement and contact the named parties. See Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts.

A successor company
A buyer may acquire a brand or some of its assets, but do not assume that an acquisition transferred warranty obligations or repair operations. Look for an official notice from the company, buyer, claims administrator, or bankruptcy case, and verify directly who is handling claims.
What changes if the company filed for bankruptcy?
A business closing is not necessarily a bankruptcy. If there is a bankruptcy case, the case documents and notices—not the closure announcement alone—determine the procedures and deadlines that apply. Find the exact debtor name and chapter, then check notices and the court docket for the trustee or claims agent, your claim’s status, and any proof-of-claim deadline.

A bankruptcy filing alone does not show whether a warranty claim will be paid or whether the business will continue operating. Chapter, available estate assets, the plan, claim classification, and court notices all matter. For a substantial claim or an active case, consider jurisdiction-specific legal advice rather than treating general consumer guidance as a prediction.

For repairs that are not being claimed under warranty, federal law generally restricts warrantors from conditioning warranty coverage on your use of specified parts or services, unless the warrantor provides them for free or has an FTC waiver. The FTC explains this in its Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law.

That protection does not guarantee that a particular independent shop can repair the product, or that parts, diagnostic information, or manufacturer support will remain available after a closure. Before authorizing work, ask whether the repair is being treated as an in-warranty claim or paid work, get an estimate, and keep the invoice and any diagnosis.

Practical steps to protect your options
- Collect the records. Keep the receipt, written warranty, service contract, product-registration information, prior repair records, and all communications.
- Identify the responsible entities. Match the defect to the warranty or contract, then contact the named warrantor, seller or dealer, and any contract provider or administrator using the details in your documents.
- Ask who is handling claims now. If a successor, buyer, dealer, or service contractor is mentioned, request confirmation of its role and the process for repairs before relying on it.
- Check bankruptcy notices if there is a case. Verify the debtor name, chapter, claims agent or trustee, your claim’s status, and any filing deadline using the official case information.
- Escalate unresolved consumer problems. The FTC points consumers to state or local consumer-protection offices and state attorneys general. State law varies, so seek advice for your jurisdiction if the amount or issue warrants it.
