Returned electronics at Costco do not all follow one publicly documented path. Costco describes moving returned merchandise through its reverse-logistics network, while its supplier agreement allows several possible outcomes—including resale, refurbishment, recycling, donation, or disposal. Some returned electronics also appear in Costco’s business-to-business liquidation auctions. Costco does not publish the share assigned to each route or disclose what happens to a particular device.
How Costco handles a return is different from what happens to it afterward
For U.S. members, Costco’s policy accepts returns within 90 days of receipt for listed electronics categories, including computers, touchscreen tablets, cameras, televisions, and cellular phones. Phone return details may vary with the carrier service contract. That is the member’s return window; it does not specify the item’s next destination. Costco’s return policy describes the exceptions and terms.
Costco.com purchases may be returned at a warehouse or through an online return request. Costco says online returns are refunded, including shipping and handling fees, without a return-shipping charge, subject to limitations and additional processing for some items. These are customer-return procedures, not a description of how returned electronics are sorted or sold. Costco’s online-order return instructions explain those options.
Where Costco says returned products go
Warehouses and depots
Costco describes a reverse-logistics process that brings returned products, recycling materials, and donations from individual warehouses to depots, where items are consolidated. The company says shipments then move to suppliers, recycling facilities, or donation centers. This is a general logistics description, not an electronics-only map: Costco does not say every returned device passes through the same facility or follows an identical sequence. Several outcomes are contractually possible
A Costco supplier agreement filed with the SEC says that, unless an item agreement or other written disposition specifies otherwise, Costco may “salvage, donate, dispose of, re-sell, re-use, refurbish, or recycle” a returned product, and may keep any proceeds. The clause establishes possible dispositions under that agreement; it does not establish a universal procedure for every return. Other written terms may apply. The SEC-filed supplier agreement contains the provision.
Some inventory is offered through liquidation auctions
Costco’s official liquidation marketplace sells overstock and member returns through auctions and truckload sales, with categories that include consumer electronics, computers, and tablets. It is a business-to-business channel, not a consumer service for looking up an individual return. The marketplace’s lot-condition descriptions warn that lots can contain incomplete, damaged, or nonworking items. That shows some returned electronics can be liquidated, but does not show how often it happens or what condition any specific device is in. What Costco has not disclosed
- Disposition percentages: The cited policy, logistics, supplier-agreement, and liquidation sources do not report what share of returned electronics is resold, refurbished, liquidated, donated, recycled, or discarded.
- The destination of a particular device: Public information does not let a customer predict where a specific laptop, phone, or television will go based only on its return reason or visible condition.
- A universal electronics inspection or data-erasure process: The cited sources do not establish that every returned device is tested, wiped, repaired, or certified before any later sale.
Costco reports estimated savings of 1.2 million gallons of diesel and more than 8 million miles avoided through reverse-logistics efficiencies in FY2025. Those figures concern logistics and backhaul efficiency; they are not statistics about returned electronics, their volume, or their final disposition. Costco Liquidation Auctions offers returned and overstock inventory to business buyers in lots, including truckload sales. Because lot contents and conditions vary, a listing should not be read as a promise that each electronic item works or is complete. This channel can explain one possible destination for some inventory, but it does not provide a route for consumers to track an individual return.
