A furniture store’s closure does not automatically cancel every warranty—but it also does not mean the manufacturer must honor every promise the store made. The key is to identify who issued the coverage: the furniture maker, the retailer, or a separate protection-plan company. Check the warranty or plan paperwork, then contact the company named as responsible for claims.
This is general U.S. consumer information. The result for a particular purchase can depend on the contract, state law, and the retailer’s bankruptcy or liquidation.
Start by identifying who made the promise
A sales receipt may show the retailer’s name even when another company is responsible for the warranty. Find the warranty certificate and look for the named warrantor, claim instructions, covered defects, exclusions, and coverage period. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) explains that under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, the party that actually makes a written warranty is responsible for it. A seller that only distributes a product covered by another party’s written warranty is not responsible under the Act for that other party’s failure to perform. FTC: Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law
- Manufacturer warranty: Contact the furniture maker named in the warranty, even if the retailer usually handled service.
- Retailer warranty: If the store itself made the written promise, do not assume the manufacturer has taken it on. Keep the store’s warranty, advertising, and any written statements about coverage.
- Service contract or protection plan: Identify the company that issued or administers the contract. The store that sold the plan may not be the company responsible for fulfilling it.
Check a separately purchased protection plan
The FTC distinguishes a service contract from a product warranty: a service contract is a separate agreement, often purchased for an additional charge, that provides for product service. The company making the service contract is responsible for ensuring its terms are disclosed. Read the plan itself for the obligor or provider, administrator, claim contact, process, and any terms addressing a provider’s closure or transfer. Then contact the company identified in the contract—not just the closed store. FTC guidance on warranties and service contracts

Contact the manufacturer if the retailer handled service
Some furniture makers rely on retailers to arrange after-sale service, so a retailer’s closure can make the practical route to a repair less clear even if a manufacturer warranty exists. Magnussen Home, for example, says it relies on retailers to provide service after a sale and also lists a Customer Care contact. That is one company’s arrangement, not a rule for all furniture brands. Magnussen Home FAQ
Ask the manufacturer whether it will accept a claim directly, whether an authorized service company or successor handles claims, and what documents it needs. If it directs you elsewhere, request the correct contact and claim procedure in writing.

Keep evidence and make the claim traceable
Before contacting the responsible company, gather the receipt, warranty certificate or plan contract, product name and identifying details, photographs of the issue, and earlier claim correspondence. Send the claim using the method and within the time limits stated in the coverage document. If a company refuses coverage, ask for the denial and the specific warranty or contract provision it relies on in writing.

If the retailer made its own warranty promise, the manufacturer is not automatically responsible for it. Whether the retailer’s promise can still be enforced, and what remedy may be available, can depend on state law and the retailer’s insolvency process. The FTC’s federal guide explains general warranty rules; it does not determine an individual claim or establish what a buyer can recover from a retailer in bankruptcy.

State law may also provide implied-warranty rights, including warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Federal law limits when a seller that offers a written warranty or service contract may disclaim implied warranties, but the application depends on the facts and governing law. If the responsible company will not resolve a claim, a state consumer-protection office or a lawyer can help assess the available options. FTC guide to federal warranty law and implied warranties
