What Happens to Direct Deposits and Automatic Payments When a Bank Closes?

Your direct deposits and automatic payments may continue after a bank closes, but it depends on how the FDIC resolves the failure. If another bank assumes the deposits, direct deposits are generally redirected and some payment services continue. If the FDIC pays off insured deposits instead, payments presented after closure may be returned unpaid. Check the FDIC’s instructions for the specific bank before changing or relying on any account details.

What happens depends on how the FDIC resolves the bank

The FDIC generally resolves a failed bank by arranging for a healthy bank to assume its deposits. If no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC conducts a payoff of insured balances. These paths affect whether existing payment arrangements continue and how you get access to insured money. The FDIC explains both outcomes.

What to expect Another bank assumes deposits FDIC pays off deposits
Direct deposits The FDIC says direct deposits, including Social Security payments, are redirected to the acquiring bank. Some direct government payments may be handled temporarily through a nearby bank; check the specific closure instructions and arrange future deposits.
Automatic payments They may continue. In the First Republic and Republic First resolutions, the FDIC said automatic payment services continued. Payment requests presented after closure may be returned unpaid because the account is frozen during the insured-balance determination.
Account details Numbers remained unchanged until written notice in the cited First Republic and Republic First resolutions; do not assume this will happen in every case. Follow instructions for receiving insured funds and setting up new payment arrangements.
Access to insured funds Depositors become customers of the assuming bank and can access insured funds. The FDIC usually pays insured balances by check; its timing depends on the account and any documentation needed.

If another bank takes over

When an acquiring bank assumes deposits, the FDIC says it redirects direct deposits to that bank. In the First Republic resolution and the Republic First resolution, the FDIC said direct deposits and automatic payment services continued, with account numbers unchanged until written notice. Those examples describe those resolutions; they are not a guarantee that every acquiring bank will preserve the same arrangements or account details.

Read the failed bank’s FDIC resolution page and communications from the acquiring bank. Before changing payroll, benefit, subscription, or biller instructions, confirm whether the routing or account number has changed and when any change takes effect. If a deposit or debit is missing, contact the payer or biller as well as the bank handling the resolution.

If the FDIC pays off insured deposits

When no bank assumes the deposits, the FDIC freezes accounts to determine the insured balance. If an outstanding check or other payment request reaches the closed bank after closure, it cannot be charged to the account and may be returned unpaid with an indication that the bank is closed. The FDIC says that return does not itself reflect on your credit standing, but you are responsible for arranging other funds with the creditor or biller.

Contact the payers and billers tied to the account, set up replacement payment methods, and keep funds available for obligations that may still be presented. The FDIC may arrange temporary handling of some direct government payments through a nearby bank, but check the specific instructions for the failed bank rather than assuming a payment will transfer automatically. The FDIC’s guide to what happens when a bank fails explains its role as receiver and the treatment of claims.

How quickly can you access insured money?

Federal law requires payment of insured deposits “as soon as possible.” The FDIC’s stated goal is to make insured-deposit payments within two business days, but that is a goal, not a guaranteed date for an individual account. The FDIC says payment has historically occurred within a few days, often the next business day, through a replacement account at another insured bank or a check. Certain trust, brokered, or fiduciary accounts may take longer if the FDIC needs documentation. See the FDIC’s payment guidance and deposit insurance FAQs.

Deposit insurance generally covers eligible balances, including principal and accrued interest through the failure date, up to the applicable coverage limits. The FDIC also acts as receiver, collecting the failed bank’s assets and settling its debts. If you have deposits above the insured limit, do not assume the excess will be immediately available or guaranteed; the FDIC handles those claims through the receivership process.

What to do when a payment is missing or returned

  1. Find the resolution instructions. Check the FDIC page for the failed bank and any notices from the acquiring bank or FDIC.
  2. Verify the payment path. Confirm with the acquiring bank whether deposits and automatic payments continue, and whether account or routing details changed.
  3. Contact the other party if needed. For a missing deposit, ask the payer to confirm where it sent the money. For a missing or returned debit, contact the biller or creditor to arrange payment another way.
  4. Use the bank handling the resolution for account questions. Ask it about insured-fund access, account status, or any required documentation.
