If an NFT marketplace closes, its website, listings and display tools may disappear—but that alone does not erase a token recorded on a blockchain. The token, the marketplace listing and the NFT’s image or metadata are separate things. Whether you can still access or sell the NFT depends on who controls the wallet, what the token’s URI points to and whether another compatible service supports it.
Do you lose your NFT if the marketplace shuts down?
Not necessarily. A marketplace usually provides a place to view, list or trade an NFT; it is not necessarily where the token itself is recorded. If the token is on a blockchain, the marketplace closing does not by itself prove that the token has been erased. You still need to establish where it is held and whether you control the wallet keys. A custodial marketplace account can have separate access or withdrawal arrangements, so the token record alone does not explain how to retrieve assets from that service.
OpenSea makes a narrower point about items it delists: “The item or collection will still exist on the blockchain (we don’t have the power to change that!) but you won’t be able to see it here.” That is OpenSea’s description of delisting from its platform, not a guarantee about every marketplace, chain, token contract or custodial account. See OpenSea’s explanation of delisted items.
What can disappear—and what may remain?
| Part of the NFT experience | What a marketplace closure may mean |
|---|---|
| Token and owner address | The token may remain recorded on its blockchain, with transfers governed by its contract and chain. Confirm the token and holder using the chain’s explorer or a compatible wallet. |
| Marketplace listing and display | Listings, search results, account pages, cached images and marketplace-specific display tools may become unavailable. Another compatible wallet or marketplace may show or support the token, but support is not universal. |
| Metadata and media | The name, description, traits and media may remain accessible, become difficult to locate or stop resolving. Their availability depends on where they are stored and whether that source continues to serve them. |
These distinctions matter because a token can still be in a wallet even when its image or description no longer loads.

Why the image or metadata might stop working
An NFT’s tokenURI or equivalent points to metadata, often a JSON file containing details such as the name, description, traits and a media reference. The metadata and the image can be hosted separately, so a working metadata file does not necessarily mean its image is available. OpenSea’s documentation describes these arrangements, but implementations differ across marketplaces and token contracts: OpenSea’s metadata standards documentation.
Traditional web hosting
If the URI points to an HTTPS address on a company’s server, availability depends on that server and its operator. If the server is shut down or the files are removed, the token may persist while the metadata or image becomes inaccessible.

IPFS or Arweave
A URI may reference content on IPFS or Arweave rather than a conventional web server. Those storage approaches have different dependencies, but seeing one of these addresses does not by itself prove that a file will remain available forever. Check whether the referenced metadata and media actually resolve. OpenSea’s platform documentation uses the label “decentralized” for IPFS or Arweave storage and describes the limits of its classification: OpenSea’s storage-type explanation.
On-chain data
Some content is stored on-chain, which has a different dependency profile from content served by an external website. OpenSea distinguishes fully on-chain content from “onchain metadata,” where media may still be external. Its storage labels are determined programmatically and may not be entirely accurate, so inspect the token URI and referenced content rather than relying on a marketplace label alone. OpenSea describes its storage classifications.

How to check your NFT and decide what to do
- Identify the token. Find its blockchain, contract address, token ID and current holder address. Use the relevant chain explorer or a compatible wallet to check the on-chain record.
- Check who controls the account. Determine whether the NFT is in a self-custody wallet whose keys you control or in an account where a marketplace or other provider controls access. If it is custodial, look for that provider’s own closure, withdrawal or export instructions; there is no universal recovery process.
- Inspect the content references. Check the NFT’s
tokenURIor equivalent, then inspect both the metadata and the media address inside it. Note whether they point to an HTTPS server, IPFS, Arweave or on-chain data, and whether each file loads. - Try another compatible viewer. If the token is present but missing from one marketplace, another wallet or marketplace may display it. Compatibility depends on the chain, token standard and service.
- Transfer only if you have a reason and a compatible destination. For a self-custody transfer, use a wallet and destination that support the same chain and token. Ledger’s guide documents one Ethereum example: sending an NFT from MetaMask to a Ledger account. It is not a universal procedure or a reason everyone needs a hardware wallet. Verify the destination address and network; a mistaken transfer can put the NFT at risk, and transactions can incur network fees. Ledger’s Ethereum NFT transfer instructions.
- Refresh only when the problem is display or indexing. OpenSea says refreshing metadata may help after an error is fixed or an item is revealed. Refreshing an index cannot restore a file that is no longer available at its source. OpenSea’s metadata refresh instructions.
What the available loss figures do—and do not—show
A 2022 ACM CCS study, “Understanding Security Issues in the NFT Ecosystem,” reported that its OpenSea dataset contained 12,215,650 assets, of which 3,175,644 had a valid metadata_url field as of June 15, 2021. In the study’s observations from June to December 2021, 3.91% of images and 9.04% of metadata records hosted on IPFS disappeared. The study also found that most asset and metadata URLs in its dataset were on non-IPFS domains. These are historical findings about that dataset and observation period—not current probabilities for an individual NFT, and not estimates of losses caused specifically by marketplace closures.
