What Happens to a Company’s Stock When Bitcoin Prices Fall?

A Bitcoin price drop can pressure a company’s shares through lower asset values, weaker mining economics, and tighter financing—but no stock moves in lockstep with Bitcoin.

When Bitcoin falls, shares of companies with significant Bitcoin exposure can come under pressure—but they do not have to fall by the same percentage, or at all. The effect depends on whether the company mines Bitcoin or holds it as a treasury asset, how it is financed, and what investors already expect.

Why a Bitcoin decline can affect a company’s stock

A company’s share price reflects expectations about its future business and finances, not just the market value of its Bitcoin. A price decline can lower the value of Bitcoin on the balance sheet, weaken mining revenue, complicate borrowing, or reduce investors’ willingness to pay a premium for Bitcoin exposure. Other business results, financing decisions, and broader market sentiment can offset or intensify those effects.

That is why a Bitcoin-linked stock is not a Bitcoin tracker. Strategy’s June 2025 SEC filing describes its securities as offering different degrees of economic exposure to Bitcoin and notes that its common shares declined significantly relative to Bitcoin after spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products began trading in January 2024. That is an example of divergence, not a rule that the shares always underperform. Strategy’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2025.

How the effect differs by company type

Bitcoin treasury companies

For a company that holds Bitcoin as a major treasury asset, a falling price reduces the market value of that reserve, all else equal. The stock’s response is not simply that change divided by the number of shares: the company also has liabilities, cash, other assets, possible operating activities, and the ability to raise funds. Investors may also revise the premium they are willing to pay for the company’s Bitcoin strategy.

Debt or Bitcoin collateral can make the decline more consequential. Lower collateral values may reduce financing flexibility, while repayments or refinancing needs can create pressure to sell assets. Whether a sale is required depends on the specific agreements, available cash, maturities, and funding options. The Associated Press reported a Standard Chartered research warning that some newer treasury companies could be forced to sell Bitcoin to meet debts if its price fell below their purchase price; that is a risk for particular capital structures, not an automatic outcome of every decline. Associated Press report, June 2025.

Bitcoin miners

Miners face both the value of any Bitcoin they hold and the economics of producing new Bitcoin. If the price falls while electricity, labor, hosting, equipment, and financing costs remain high, each coin may bring in less dollar revenue against continuing expenses. MARA Holdings said in its 2024 Form 10-K that its revenue is primarily derived from mining, profitability fluctuates in direct correlation with Bitcoin price movements, and a lower price reduces the dollar value of mined Bitcoin. The company also said low prices can leave less cash for expansion and other initiatives. This is MARA’s disclosure; miners do not all have identical costs or strategies. MARA Holdings’ 2024 Form 10-K, filed March 3, 2025.

Companies with incidental Bitcoin exposure

A business that holds a relatively small Bitcoin balance may be less exposed through its reserves than a treasury-focused company or miner. Its ordinary sales, costs, and financing may matter more to its share price. The relevant question is not simply whether it owns Bitcoin, but how large that exposure is compared with the rest of the business and its obligations.

Does a Bitcoin stock fall more than Bitcoin?

It can, but there is no dependable multiplier. Bitcoin beta describes how a stock’s historical returns have moved relative to Bitcoin over a defined sample and period; it is not a promise about the next price move.

A 2025 preprint by Aufiero, Mele, and Mazzocchi studied 39 publicly listed Bitcoin-holding firms using daily returns from each firm’s first Bitcoin acquisition through April 2025. It reported an average Bitcoin beta of 0.62, with 12 firms above 1. Those findings describe that sample and period, not a stable coefficient for an individual stock or a forecast. The study also identified Bitcoin as the dominant information driver in its transfer-entropy analysis. Aufiero, Mele, and Mazzocchi, “Cryptocurrencies in the Balance Sheet: Insights from (Micro)Strategy – Bitcoin Interactions,” 2025 preprint.

A stock can drop more than Bitcoin if investors also mark down the operating business, financing outlook, or valuation premium. It can fall less—or rise—if company-specific news or the broader market supports it. The direction and size of any move depend on the firm and the period being considered.

What debt, dilution, and accounting can change

Debt, collateral, and liquidity

When Bitcoin backs borrowing, a falling price can weaken the collateral position and reduce room to borrow or refinance. Cash needs and debt terms matter: a company with adequate liquidity may be able to meet obligations without selling Bitcoin, while a company with limited options may face greater pressure. MARA’s 2025 Form 10-K describes Bitcoin-backed borrowing and reports a fair-value loss in 2025 that was primarily due to Bitcoin’s significant price decline. The filing documents MARA’s circumstances; it does not establish a universal sale trigger for Bitcoin-holding companies. MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K, filed March 2, 2026.

Share issuance and dilution

A company may issue shares to raise cash or fund its strategy. Issuing more shares can dilute existing shareholders’ ownership, and investors may react to that prospect independently of Bitcoin’s price. MARA’s 2024 filing identifies stock-price volatility and dilution from at-the-market share issuances among its stockholder risks. Whether an issuance occurs, and on what terms, is company-specific. Accounting value is not share-price performance

A reported fair-value change in Bitcoin holdings is an accounting result, not a measurement of how much the company’s stock fell. For example, MARA reported that the fair value of its Bitcoin holdings declined by $422.2 million during the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, primarily because of Bitcoin’s significant price decline. That figure describes the holdings’ fair-value change, not a stock-price loss. MARA Holdings’ 2025 Form 10-K.

How to assess a particular Bitcoin-linked stock

Before interpreting a stock’s move during a Bitcoin decline, check the company’s latest filings and ask:

  • What is the business model? Separate mining revenue from Bitcoin held as a treasury asset and from incidental holdings.
  • How large is the exposure? Compare Bitcoin holdings and Bitcoin-linked earnings with the company’s other assets, revenue, and operations.
  • What obligations come due? Review debt, collateral arrangements, repayment dates, refinancing needs, cash, and liquidity.
  • Could the share count change? Look for equity issuance plans or other sources of dilution.
  • What is investors’ valuation paying for? The stock may reflect operating assets, Bitcoin exposure, or a premium for the treasury strategy.
  • What period are you comparing? A company’s accounting result, its share-price performance, and Bitcoin’s market price are different measures; a relationship observed in one period may not persist in another.

These checks help explain possible transmission channels; they do not predict a stock’s next move or rank securities.
