A margin call means your brokerage account no longer meets its required equity level. Your broker may demand cash or eligible securities, and it may sell investments to cover the shortfall—sometimes without advance notice and before a stated deadline. Read the notice and margin agreement, then contact the broker promptly to confirm the amount due, accepted responses, timing, and whether liquidation has begun or can begin immediately.

If you are asking, “What happens in a margin call and how to respond?” the practical first step is to establish exactly what your broker requires and what it may do next. There is no universal deadline or universally best financial choice. The details depend on your account, securities, agreement, broker, and jurisdiction.

What a margin call means

A margin account lets you borrow money from a brokerage firm to buy or hold securities, with the securities serving as collateral. Your account equity is the market value of the securities, minus the amount you owe. If prices fall, equity can drop below the broker’s maintenance requirement. The broker can then require you to add cash or eligible securities, or take other action allowed by your agreement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A margin call is therefore an account deficiency, not simply a warning that a stock has fallen. What matters is whether the equity in the margin account satisfies the requirement the broker applies. A fall in market value can reduce equity while the amount borrowed remains owed. Interest on the loan also adds cost over time. If an account crosses the applicable threshold, the broker may require more collateral or sell investments under the agreement.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes a FINRA maintenance baseline of at least 25% of the total market value of margin securities. That is a regulatory baseline, not a guaranteed threshold for an individual account: firms may set higher house requirements, and the applicable requirement can depend on the firm and security and may change. The SEC says many firms require 30% to 40%, sometimes more depending on the security. Check your own agreement and account notice rather than relying on a general percentage. SEC Investor Bulletin: Understanding Margin Accounts; Investor.gov glossary: Margin Call.

For example, if a broker applies a 40% requirement to a position, a calculation based only on a 25% baseline could give a false sense of security. The house requirement that applies to your holdings is the relevant figure. Requirements may also change, so a prior balance or a percentage seen in a general guide does not establish what is required now.

An illustrative example of maintenance equity

The SEC’s example starts with $16,000 in securities: $8,000 paid by the investor and $8,000 borrowed. If the securities fall in value to $12,000, equity is $4,000 ($12,000 market value minus the $8,000 loan). At a 25% maintenance requirement, required equity would be $3,000, so the example account remains above that level. At a 40% requirement, required equity would be $4,800, leaving an $800 deficiency. These are illustrative figures from the SEC, not a forecast or a statement of what a particular brokerage will require.

The example shows why two accounts with the same market value and loan can have different outcomes under different maintenance percentages. It also shows how a decline affects the account: the market value falls, but the borrowed amount is still part of the calculation. A reader should not use the example to calculate a personal deposit without confirming the broker’s current requirement, eligible collateral, amounts owed, and its method for applying a deposit or sale.

What can happen after the broker issues a call

The broker may ask you to deposit money or eligible securities. But a call is not a promise that the broker will wait while you arrange a response. The SEC’s Investor.gov glossary says a firm may require an immediate deposit or sell positions without informing the investor in advance; the firm chooses which securities to sell and may act before an offered deadline. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin puts it plainly: “Your brokerage firm may sell some or all of your securities without consulting you to pay off your margin loan.” SEC Investor Bulletin: Understanding Margin Accounts.

In other words, receiving a notice does not necessarily start a guaranteed grace period. An offered deadline should not be treated as a promise that no sale can happen before then unless the broker confirms that directly. A broker’s rights, and the procedures it follows, are governed by the account agreement and circumstances. If a call arrives, ask whether liquidation has already started, whether it can start immediately, and whether any stated deadline limits that right.

FINRA’s investor disclosure also says firms can sell securities or other assets in accounts held at the firm. If the sale proceeds do not pay off the loan and other amounts owed, you remain responsible for the shortfall. Depending on the terms and circumstances, the firm’s rights may extend to other assets held at that firm. FINRA, Guidance on Margin Flyer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sale does not necessarily settle the account or erase the debt. The sale price determines the proceeds, and those proceeds may not cover the loan and other amounts owed. If a residual balance remains, the customer is still responsible for it. This is one reason to ask the broker what a proposed response would do to the deficiency and any outstanding loan, rather than assuming that a partial sale or deposit will fully resolve the call.

How to respond to a margin call

  1. Read the notice and your margin agreement

Identify the stated deficiency and deadline, which deposits or securities the broker will accept, the current maintenance or house requirement, and the agreement’s liquidation terms. Note any language about immediate action or the broker’s discretion. Check whether the notice says a particular amount is due by a particular time, and whether it distinguishes a request to meet a maintenance requirement from repayment of the loan.

Gather the account information the broker may need to discuss the issue: the notice, the relevant account statement, and the positions or balances named in the alert. Do not assume that every security or transfer method is eligible. Ask the firm to confirm what it will accept and how it will value the asset for this purpose.

  2. Contact the broker promptly

Use contact information from the broker’s official website or a recent account statement, not an unverified message or incoming call. Ask the broker to confirm the amount needed, the accepted ways to address it, the deadline and the exact time zone, and whether the account is already subject to liquidation. Ask directly whether a stated deadline prevents liquidation before then; do not assume it does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful direct questions include: “What is the current deficiency, and how was it calculated?” “What house requirement applies to these securities right now?” “Which deposits or securities will count, and when must they be received?” “Can the firm liquidate now, or before the notice’s deadline?” “Has a sale already been initiated?” and “If a sale occurs, could an unpaid loan balance remain?” If the representative cannot answer, ask how to get the calculation and terms in writing.

Confirm any deadline details carefully. A date alone may not tell you the time zone or the time by which funds must be received and credited. Your broker’s notice and agreement—not another investor’s experience—are where to verify account-specific timing.

  3. Compare the available responses

Consider only options the broker confirms are available for your account. A cash deposit can raise account equity but puts more of your money at risk in a leveraged account. Selling securities can reduce the loan or deficiency but may lock in a loss and may not fully repay the balance. The right choice depends on your financial circumstances; there is no universally best response.

Before taking action, compare the immediate effect on equity or the loan, whether you would expose additional cash to market risk or realize a loss by selling, how much time the broker allows, and whether liquidation discretion remains in place. Ask how the firm will calculate the result and whether the proposed action is sufficient to address the current deficiency. The sources do not provide a universal numerical answer for how much cash to deposit or which position to sell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat a deposit as a guaranteed pause in liquidation, and do not assume that selling a holding will fully repay the loan. Ask the broker to explain how it would apply the transaction and what happens if the account remains deficient. This comparison is about clarifying consequences, not a recommendation to choose one route.

  4. Keep a clear record

Save the notice and agreement, and record the date, time, and substance of broker conversations, deposits, and trades. If you dispute the calculation or the response you received, ask the broker to explain the calculation in writing. Consider consulting an appropriately qualified financial or legal professional about your circumstances.

Keep records of what the broker said about the deficiency, what it would accept, the deadline, and liquidation rights. If you make a deposit or another transaction, preserve confirmation details. A record helps you compare the broker’s explanation with the account notice and clarify an unresolved dispute; it does not guarantee that a liquidation will be delayed or reversed.

This is a practical way to establish account-specific facts, not a promise of a cure period or a recommendation to borrow, deposit money, or sell a particular security. The SEC’s investor materials urge investors to understand margin-account terms and risks and to ask the broker questions. SEC: Margin: Borrowing Money to Pay for Stocks; SEC Investor Bulletin: Understanding Margin Accounts.

Cash deposit or sale of securities: what differs?

The broker’s notice and agreement control what it will accept and when. These are general consequences to discuss with the firm, not a recommendation or a guarantee that either option will stop a liquidation. The possible effect depends on the amount involved, what the broker accepts, its calculation, and whether the account remains subject to liquidation.

Consideration Deposit cash or eligible securities Sell securities
Potential effect on equity or loan Additional eligible assets may increase equity, subject to the broker’s calculation and eligibility rules. Sale proceeds may reduce the loan or deficiency, depending on the amount realized and the broker’s calculation.
Exposure and loss More of your funds are exposed to market risk in the account. A sale may realize a loss at the sale price.
Deadline and liquidation discretion The broker’s notice and agreement determine acceptance and timing; a deposit does not itself establish that liquidation is paused. The firm may sell positions itself and may choose which securities to sell under its terms.
Could a balance remain? A deposit may not be enough to resolve the deficiency or repay the loan. Yes. If proceeds do not cover amounts owed, you may remain responsible for the shortfall.
Universal numeric outcome Not established; ask the broker how it will apply the deposit to your account. Not established; the result depends on sale proceeds, amounts owed, and account terms.

The deposit-versus-sale choice is not merely a question of which action increases the account’s equity in the short term. A deposit puts more of your money into a leveraged account, where it remains exposed to market risk. A sale turns a security into proceeds at the sale price and may crystallize a loss. Either action can leave a deficiency or outstanding debt if the amount is insufficient. The broker’s explanation of how it will treat the action is essential before relying on a particular outcome.

How long do you have to meet a margin call?

There is no universal deadline established for every broker or account. The timing and the broker’s right to act depend on the notice, margin agreement, applicable requirements, and circumstances. Some firms may require immediate action, and the broker may be able to liquidate before a deadline it has offered. Confirm the exact deadline and whether it limits liquidation directly with the broker; do not rely on another investor’s experience or assume a standard number of days.

When you ask, clarify the calendar date, cutoff time, time zone, and when a deposit must be received or credited to count. Also ask whether the firm has already started liquidation and whether the deadline is a target for your response or a binding limit on the broker’s ability to sell. The notice and agreement do not establish a standard cure period. A deadline in one investor’s notice may not apply to another account, security, or firm.

Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?

Yes. Under the terms described by the SEC, a brokerage firm may sell some or all of your securities without consulting you in advance, may choose which securities to sell, and may act before a stated deadline. The agreement and account circumstances matter, so read the liquidation provisions and ask the broker whether a sale has started or can start now. The SEC’s Investor.gov glossary explains this discretion: Margin Call.

FINRA’s disclosure also notes that a firm can sell securities or other assets in accounts held at the firm. This means you should not assume the broker will sell only the position that first declined or only the shares you would choose to sell. Ask the broker to identify its rights under your agreement, but remember that the SEC guidance describes the broker as choosing which securities to sell. Promptly ask about liquidation status rather than waiting for a follow-up notice.

Can I lose more than I invested?

Yes. A margin loan adds debt to your investment exposure. If the securities decline sharply, the value left after a forced sale may not cover the loan and other amounts owed; you can remain liable for the shortfall even after losing your initial contribution. Borrowing interest also adds to the cost. The SEC’s margin education explains that margin can magnify losses as well as gains: Margin: Borrowing Money to Pay for Stocks. The FINRA disclosure addresses responsibility for an unpaid balance after liquidation: Guidance on Margin Flyer.

Liquidation is not a promise that the account will be sold at a price that covers what is owed. If the value of collateral has fallen and proceeds are not enough to repay the loan and other amounts owed, the shortfall remains your responsibility. Interest also means the cost of borrowing is not limited to the market loss on the securities. The sources do not provide a single figure for the interest rate, fees, or a particular account’s final balance, so check the broker’s disclosures and your account records.

Common assumptions to avoid

  • “The regulatory baseline is my broker’s requirement.” Not necessarily. The SEC describes a FINRA baseline of at least 25%, while firms may set higher requirements, including 30% to 40% or more depending on the security. Ask what house requirement applies to your holdings now.

  • “The notice gives me a guaranteed waiting period.” Do not assume that. A firm may demand an immediate deposit and may be able to sell before an offered deadline. Ask directly whether liquidation can happen now.

  • “The broker will sell the security I choose.” The SEC says the firm may choose which securities to sell. Ask about its discretion and the agreement’s liquidation terms.

  • “A sale will eliminate the debt.” Not if the proceeds fail to cover the loan and other amounts owed. You may remain responsible for a shortfall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “A deposit is automatically the safest or best response.” Adding money can expose more of your funds to loss, and no response is universally best. Confirm eligibility and consequences with the broker and consider your circumstances.

Which rules apply to your account?

The figures and explanations here concern U.S. securities margin. A broker, account agreement, security, or jurisdiction can change applicable requirements and procedures. The regulatory baseline is not a promise that your broker will use that threshold, give you a particular response window, or accept a particular asset. Your notice, agreement, and broker’s direct explanation are the relevant starting points for an existing call.

The SEC’s materials provide general investor education, not a calculation of your account’s deficiency or a determination of what your broker must accept. The FINRA disclosure highlights possible liquidation and residual responsibility for amounts owed. Neither source verifies a particular reader’s deadline or remedy. If your account is outside the United States, do not assume these U.S. descriptions determine the rules that apply to you; check your broker’s agreement and the rules in your jurisdiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in a margin call and how to respond?

A margin call means your account equity has fallen below the broker’s applicable maintenance requirement. Read the notice and margin agreement, then contact the broker promptly to confirm the deficiency, accepted responses, deadline, and whether it can liquidate now. Do not assume the broker must wait for you to act.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do I have to meet a margin call?

There is no universal deadline established for every broker or account. Check the notice and agreement, and ask the broker for the exact cutoff, time zone, and whether liquidation can occur before the stated deadline. Some firms may require immediate action.

Can my broker sell my stocks without telling me?

Yes. SEC investor guidance says a broker may sell some or all securities without consulting you in advance, choose which securities to sell, and act before an offered deadline. Confirm liquidation status and the terms in your agreement directly with the broker.

Can I lose more than I invested?

Yes. The value of securities sold may not cover the margin loan and other amounts owed. You can remain responsible for the shortfall after liquidation, and borrowing interest adds cost.

Will depositing cash automatically stop the broker from selling?

Not necessarily. The broker’s notice and agreement determine what it accepts and when, and a deposit does not by itself establish that liquidation is paused. Ask the broker whether the funds will count in time and whether the account remains subject to liquidation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will selling securities always pay off the margin loan?

No. If sale proceeds do not cover the loan and other amounts owed, a shortfall may remain and you can still be responsible for it. Ask the broker how it would apply a sale and what balance could remain.

Is the 25% maintenance figure what my broker will require?

Not necessarily. The SEC describes a FINRA maintenance baseline of at least 25%, but firms may set higher house requirements; the SEC says many require 30% to 40%, sometimes more depending on the security. Confirm the current requirement for your account with the broker.

The Bottom Line

A margin call is urgent, but it does not come with one standard deadline or one right response for every investor. Read the notice and agreement, contact the broker through verified details, and confirm the current deficiency, accepted options, exact timing, and liquidation rights. A broker may sell without advance notice, and a sale may still leave you owing money. Compare the confirmed consequences carefully; do not assume a deposit or a stated deadline guarantees that liquidation will stop.
