You may also lose the purchase grace period, so new purchases can begin accruing interest before the next bill is due. Paying only the minimum can keep the account current when paid on time, but usually takes longer and costs more than paying a larger amount. Carrying debt is not necessary to build credit.
The exact result depends on the card’s current agreement: student cards do not share one universal APR, minimum-payment formula, grace-period rule, or payment-allocation policy. This guide is U.S.-focused; use your latest statement and agreement for the terms that apply to your account.

What “carrying a balance” means
A credit card balance is the amount you owe. You carry a balance when you do not pay the full amount due for a billing cycle and some debt remains on the account. The unpaid amount can accrue interest according to the APR and calculation method that apply to that type of balance.
That is different from using a card and then paying the statement balance in full by its due date. When a card offers a purchase grace period and you meet its terms, paying the full statement balance on time generally lets you avoid interest on purchases. A card’s agreement controls whether a grace period is offered and the conditions for using or regaining it.

“Student” describes the intended market or account category; it does not establish a special universal interest rate or guarantee an interest-free period. Federal rules address college-student credit-card accounts, but the commercial terms still vary by account. The operative terms are in the cardholder agreement and statement.
How interest can add to the balance
APR and daily interest
The APR is the annualized rate for a category of balance, such as purchases, cash advances, or balance transfers. Many issuers calculate interest daily using a daily periodic rate and the account’s average daily balance. For a daily periodic rate, the agreement may describe dividing the APR by 365; follow the calculation method in your own agreement.
Because interest can accrue day by day, when you pay can matter as well as how much you pay. Reducing the balance earlier leaves less debt exposed to interest for the remaining days in the billing cycle. Paying more than the minimum can also reduce the principal faster, which can reduce future interest. Your statement lists the APRs and balances for applicable transaction categories.

Purchases, cash advances, and other balances
Do not assume every transaction has the same rate or grace-period treatment. Purchases may have a grace period if the card offers one and you meet its conditions. Cash advances generally do not receive a purchase grace period and may accrue interest immediately. Balance transfers can have a separate APR and terms.
If your account contains balances with different APRs, the statement must show balance categories with different rates. Payment allocation can affect how quickly each category is repaid: generally, the portion of a payment above the minimum goes first to the balance with the highest APR, while the issuer generally determines how the minimum portion is allocated. Check the agreement for the rules on your account.
What happens to the purchase grace period
The CFPB defines a grace period as “the period between the end of a billing cycle and the date your payment is due.” Issuers are not required to offer a grace period, although many cards offer one for purchases. When a purchase grace period applies, paying the full statement balance by the due date is generally required to avoid purchase interest.
If you leave part of the statement balance unpaid, the grace period may be lost. In that case, new purchases may accrue interest from their transaction dates rather than receiving time until the due date. The exact rules for losing and restoring a grace period vary by agreement. Do not assume that paying the next bill in full automatically restores it; check the issuer’s stated conditions.

Cash advances generally start accruing interest immediately, whether or not a purchase grace period applies. If you use the card for different transaction types, review the agreement and statement rather than treating the account as one balance with one rate.
What minimum-only payments do—and do not do
The minimum payment is the amount the card terms require for that month. Paying at least the minimum by the due date is important if you cannot pay the full balance: it helps avoid a missed-payment delinquency. But the minimum is not a plan to avoid interest. When you pay only that amount, less of your payment usually reduces the principal, leaving more debt to accrue interest for longer.
Federal periodic-statement rules require covered issuers to provide a minimum-payment warning and repayment disclosures, subject to exceptions. Regulation Z, 12 CFR § 1026.7(b)(12)(i)(A), states: “Minimum Payment Warning: If you make only the minimum payment each period, you will pay more in interest and it will take you longer to pay off your balance;” The statement’s estimate is based on its balance, rates, minimum formula, and assumptions; it is not a universal payoff forecast.

Use the estimate on your own statement to understand the implications of minimum-only repayment. Then compare it with a larger monthly payment you can realistically sustain. The CFPB’s young-adult educational guidance uses a $1,000 credit-card debt example to illustrate how long minimum payments can take; that figure is an illustration, not a prediction for every student or card.

What can happen if you miss the minimum
If you do not pay at least the minimum by the due date, a late fee may apply. Depending on the agreement and applicable law, a missed payment may also have rate consequences, and it may harm your credit history. A penalty APR is not automatic on every card or balance, so check the agreement for the conditions that apply to your account.
If you expect to miss a payment, contact the issuer promptly and ask what options are available for your account. Do not assume an extension, fee waiver, or other accommodation will be granted. If you can make a payment, paying at least the required minimum by the due date remains the immediate priority.

Credit scoring models consider repayment history and how close your balances are to your credit limits. A high balance relative to the available limit can raise your utilization ratio and may weigh on a score. The size of any score effect cannot be predicted from the balance alone; models and individual credit files differ.

Also avoid assuming that one student card has a particular credit-reporting arrangement simply because it is a student card. The agreement and issuer practices govern account-specific details; a clause in one issuer’s agreement is not evidence that all student cards report the same way.
What to check on your statement and agreement
Before deciding how much to pay or whether to use the card for another transaction, locate the terms that determine the cost and consequences. Statements and agreements can be lengthy, but these items answer the most important questions:
- Statement balance and due date: identify what is owed for the billing cycle and when the payment must arrive.
- Minimum payment: find the amount currently due and the method for making a timely payment.
- APR by transaction category: distinguish purchase, cash-advance, and balance-transfer rates where they apply; note whether a rate is introductory or variable.
- Grace-period terms: check whether purchases receive a grace period, what payment is required to avoid interest, and what must happen to restore the period after carrying a balance.
- Minimum-payment warning and payoff estimate: use the statement’s disclosure to understand minimum-only repayment and compare it with a higher payment.
- Payment allocation: see how payments are applied when the account has more than one APR or transaction category.
- Fees and rate conditions: review annual and late fees, as well as any conditions that could change the rate.
These are also the useful points to compare if you are evaluating a different card or offer. A lower purchase APR alone does not tell the whole story if another rate, fee, grace-period rule, or allocation method matters to your use.
A practical response if you already owe money
- Open the latest statement. Record the statement balance, minimum payment, due date, and each applicable APR. Use the statement, not a general student-card average, because the terms are account-specific.
- Pay at least the minimum on time. If you cannot clear the full balance, making the required payment by the due date is the immediate step to help avoid delinquency-related consequences.
- Choose a sustainable amount above the minimum if possible. A larger payment reduces the balance faster than a minimum-only payment. Paying earlier can also reduce the time a balance accrues interest when interest is calculated daily.
- Read the payoff disclosure. Compare the statement’s minimum-payment estimate with the amount you can commit to paying. Do not treat the estimate as guaranteed if you keep using the card or the balance, rates, or payment pattern changes.
- Pause costly transactions while paying down debt. In particular, avoid cash advances when possible because they generally begin accruing interest immediately. Check the rate and grace-period treatment before adding purchases to an account that already carries a balance.
- Confirm the agreement’s rules. Look up grace-period restoration, payment allocation, fees, and possible penalty-rate conditions. If a payment may be missed, call the issuer to ask about options specific to your account.
Why your card’s exact terms matter
There is no single APR or payoff duration that can accurately describe every student credit card. The cost of carrying a particular balance depends on its amount, the applicable APR, how interest is calculated, how quickly payments reduce it, and whether new transactions are added. The minimum formula and any separate rates further affect the result.
For that reason, a generic calculator or example cannot replace the statement’s repayment estimate and the card agreement. The CFPB, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Federal Trade Commission publish consumer education on credit cards, but issuer-specific terms remain the source for an individual account. The figures and rules that matter to your decision should be checked against your current statement and agreement.
