If Bitcoin’s price falls while it secures your loan, the collateral is worth less and your loan-to-value ratio (LTV) rises. Depending on your lender’s terms, you may receive a warning and need to add collateral or repay part of the loan. If the contract’s liquidation threshold is reached, some pledged Bitcoin may be sold to cover the debt and charges. Thresholds, warning periods, fees, and sale procedures vary by provider.

Why a falling Bitcoin price raises your LTV

LTV is the outstanding loan balance divided by the current market value of the collateral. If the debt stays the same while Bitcoin’s price drops, the collateral’s value falls and LTV rises. Accrued interest can also increase the balance and push LTV higher, even without another price move.

Lenders monitor collateral against thresholds set by their contracts and systems. There is no single Bitcoin-loan warning level or liquidation threshold that applies to every lender.

What a warning or “margin call” means

A lender may notify you when your position approaches a specified threshold and require you to restore it by adding collateral or reducing the debt. A notification does not necessarily mean you have a guaranteed grace period. Read the notice and your loan agreement for the deadline, accepted cure methods, and the level that triggers a sale.

Some lenders call these notices LTV notifications rather than margin calls. For example, Ledn’s help article, dated October 1, 2026, says it emails borrowers at 70% LTV and sends another alert at 75%. Those are Ledn-specific terms, not industry standards. Ledn Help Center: What Happens If the value of your collateral significantly decreases?

How you may be able to respond

  • Add Bitcoin collateral. Check which asset and deposit method the lender accepts. A transfer may not count until it receives the required confirmations and appears in your account.
  • Repay part or all of the loan. Confirm which payment methods qualify and how long funds take to arrive and be applied to your balance.
  • Use an automatic top-up feature, if offered and enabled. Availability and operation depend on the lender and account.

Ledn lists BTC top-ups, partial or full repayment, and Auto Top-Up where available as possible responses. It says a BTC deposit does not lower displayed LTV until it is confirmed on-chain. Do not assume that a payment or transfer has cured your position until your lender confirms the updated balance and LTV. Ledn Help Center: loan repayment and collateral information

What happens if the lender liquidates collateral

If the applicable threshold is reached, the lender or protocol may sell some collateral and apply the proceeds to the loan under the contract. The process can be automatic or manual; fees, execution prices, and what happens to any remaining collateral depend on the product.

Provider and product material What the cited source says Important qualification
Ledn Bitcoin-backed loans Automatic liquidation at or above 80% LTV; a 0.50% trade spread; remaining collateral returned after the outstanding balance and accrued interest are covered. Ledn-specific terms from its help article dated October 1, 2026. The article says liquidation is automatic and irreversible. Check your agreement and account for applicable terms.
Coinbase / Morpho USDC loan For the described BTC-collateral case, Coinbase’s help page gives an 86% LTV liquidation point and a 4.38% penalty. This refers to a distinct on-chain USDC product, not every Coinbase loan or margin product. Coinbase Help: Borrowing with Bitcoin
Unchained Bitcoin-backed loan Its help article describes manual collateral liquidation under a collateral-to-principal (CTP) violation process; selling fees are deducted from proceeds. Unchained uses CTP terminology rather than the LTV examples above, and the borrower may need to participate in signing or settlement. Unchained Help: collateral liquidation

What to check when you receive a warning

  1. Open your lender account and note the outstanding balance, collateral amount, displayed LTV or CTP, warning level, and liquidation trigger.
  2. Read the notice and agreement to identify the exact cure actions allowed and any deadline.
  3. Check how quickly a top-up or repayment is credited, including required blockchain confirmations or payment processing time.
  4. Confirm whether liquidation is automatic or manual, who controls the sale, which charges apply, and how any surplus collateral is handled.
  5. Plan for a fast price decline: a transfer or payment in progress may not be credited before another threshold is reached.

How to compare loan terms before borrowing

Compare the contractual mechanics, not just the advertised interest rate. Pay particular attention to the initial LTV or CTP, warning and liquidation levels, available cure methods and timing, sale authority, fees, custody, and collateral control. Also check whether terms differ by jurisdiction or account.

Collateral arrangements vary. The cited materials include on-chain collateral and multisignature custody; those descriptions are not interchangeable. Understand who can move or sell your Bitcoin, whether collateral can be reused, and what the agreement says if the lender or protocol is unavailable. Unchained Help: collateral and loan process
