Zulily’s collapse was the end of a decline that began before its 2023 sale to Regent. After rapid growth and a high-profile IPO, the retailer’s revenue fell, customer acquisition became more expensive, and its brand and competitive position came under pressure. In December 2023, Zulily began winding down through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors (ABC), not a conventional bankruptcy filing.
How Zulily grew from startup to major retailer
Darrell Cavens and Mark Vadon founded Zulily in 2010, initially focusing on families and mothers. The online retailer grew quickly: GeekWire, citing Qurate Retail Group financial statements, reported revenue of $143 million in 2011 and $331 million in 2012. Zulily went public in 2013, when its valuation exceeded $4 billion, according to GeekWire’s retrospective.

Liberty Interactive, later known as Qurate Retail Group, acquired Zulily in 2015 for $2.4 billion, the Associated Press reported. The company had moved from a fast-growing standalone retailer into a larger corporate portfolio, but its early growth did not continue indefinitely.
Why did Zulily shut down?
No single cause explains the shutdown. The available reporting points to several pressures that compounded over time: a reversal in pandemic-era demand, falling revenue, more costly customer acquisition, a less distinct brand as the business broadened its audience, and tougher competition from retailers including Amazon, Shein, and Temu. These are reported contributing factors, not a formal finding assigning a precise share of responsibility to any one factor or owner.

Revenue fell after the pandemic-era lift
GeekWire reported that Zulily’s revenue declined 11% year over year in 2021 and 38% in 2022. The same retrospective reported a loss of more than 1,000 employees between the third quarters of 2021 and 2022. The figures describe a business under pressure before Regent bought it in 2023.
Qurate’s SEC filing reported Zulily revenue of $192 million and a loss of $35 million for the three months ended March 31, 2023. Those are quarterly results, not full-year totals. The filing also said Zulily had started transformation initiatives in the first quarter of 2022, including closing its Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, fulfillment center and reducing its corporate workforce.

Customer acquisition became more expensive
In remarks to analysts in August 2021, then-Qurate CEO Mike George said iOS privacy changes challenged marketers and that Zulily’s high concentration of Facebook marketing had increased the cost of acquiring customers and put pressure on sales. That is an executive’s explanation of a marketing headwind; it does not, on its own, establish the cause of the company’s ultimate failure.
The brand became harder to define
Zulily built its identity around deals and products for families, especially mothers. As it expanded beyond that core audience, University of Washington marketing professor Jeffrey Shulman said, “It wasn’t clear what was going to draw somebody outside that target market.” Former Zulily chief marketing officer Melissa Akkineni put the issue more bluntly: “We lost an identity.” These retrospective assessments suggest a positioning problem, not proof that broadening the audience alone doomed the retailer.

Competition and the Amazon lawsuit
As shoppers gained more ways to buy online, Zulily faced competition from large marketplaces and low-price retailers. Shortly before the shutdown, Zulily sued Amazon and made allegations described in GeekWire’s retrospective. A lawsuit’s claims are allegations, not adjudicated facts; the reporting cited here does not establish the case’s later disposition. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the suit as a legal finding that Amazon caused Zulily’s collapse.
Qurate sold Zulily to Regent in 2023
Qurate announced the sale to Regent on May 24, 2023. Qurate said the divestiture fit its plan to optimize its portfolio, refocus on QVC, HSN, and Cornerstone Brands, and preserve liquidity. Its announcement said Zulily had about $80 million in outstanding borrowing that Qurate repaid at closing. That was the seller’s stated rationale.

Regent chairman Michael Reinstein described the purchase as an opportunity to return Zulily to its entrepreneurial roots as an independent business. That was Regent’s vision for the acquisition, not evidence that the turnaround succeeded. By the time Zulily shut down later that year, the company’s financial difficulties were mounting.

Not through a conventional bankruptcy filing, according to contemporaneous coverage. On December 22, 2023, Zulily entered an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, or ABC. In this process, a company transfers assets to an assignee to wind down the business and distribute proceeds to creditors. It is an alternative to bankruptcy, though it still involves a formal winding-down process and does not mean creditors are guaranteed full repayment.

The shutdown followed layoffs and plans to close the Seattle headquarters and warehouses in Nevada and Ohio, affecting more than 800 employees, GeekWire reported. The Associated Press reported that CEO Terry Boyle had left at the end of October as financial troubles grew. Ryan C. Baker, a vice president at Douglas Wilson Companies, which was involved in the wind-down, said: “Our goal is to effectuate a swift and efficient process that maximizes value to Zulily’s creditors.”
Who owns Zulily now?
The company’s assets and brand rights changed hands after the 2023 wind-down, but those transactions do not establish that the original Zulily retailer resumed operating or that its products are currently available.
- March 2024: Beyond announced that it had purchased Zulily assets for $4.5 million and said it planned to use the brand in its asset-light retail model.
- March 2025 agreement: Beyond’s FY2025 SEC filing says it agreed to sell its rights in the Zulily brand to Lyons Trading Company, operator of Proozy.com, for $5 million. Beyond was to retain a 25% stake in a newly created entity.
These records document the asset purchase and later brand-rights agreement. They do not confirm the current retail operation, ownership beyond the terms disclosed in that agreement, or current merchandise availability as of October 8, 2026.
