The “today” claim was made on May 8, 2025. The next day, International Airlines Group (IAG) announced an order that included 32 Boeing 787-10s for British Airways—but it did not disclose a negotiated total price of $10 billion. The announcement also covered 21 Airbus A330-900neos for possible use by other IAG airlines.
Which airline was behind the Boeing order?
On May 8, 2025, during news of a US–UK trade arrangement, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said an unnamed British company would announce a US$10 billion Boeing aircraft purchase. Contemporary reporting linked the expected announcement to IAG, but the company had not yet formally identified the order. AP reported Lutnick’s statement; Reuters coverage carried by Yahoo also placed it in the trade-announcement context.
On May 9, IAG—the group behind British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and LEVEL—specified the order. It assigned 32 Boeing 787-10 aircraft to British Airways. IAG’s announcement is the primary source for the aircraft and allocation details. Boeing’s UK aviation page also identifies British Airways as an airline with a UK air operator certificate that operates the 787 Dreamliner.
What aircraft did IAG order?
The announcement covered 53 widebody aircraft across two manufacturers. The Boeing aircraft were allocated to British Airways; the Airbus aircraft could be deployed within other IAG airlines.

IAG later confirmed the orders in its FY2025 results, which said 15 of the 32 Boeing 787-10s represented exercises of options. That detail describes how the Boeing order was assembled; it does not change the announced total of 32 aircraft.
Was the order actually worth $10 billion?
The US$10 billion figure was Lutnick’s May 8 public claim about an unnamed British company’s planned Boeing purchase. It should not be treated as IAG’s disclosed final contract price. In the May 9 announcement, IAG gave an approximate list price of US$397 million per Boeing 787-10 in January 2025 US-dollar terms, but did not publish its negotiated net price.

A list price is not the same as the amount an airline ultimately agrees to pay. Multiplying a published list figure by the number of aircraft would not establish IAG’s transaction value, and the US$10 billion claim should remain attributed to the original statement rather than presented as a confirmed price for IAG’s order.
Was the order part of the US–UK trade deal?
The public claim and the order announcement came during the same US–UK trade-arrangement news cycle: Lutnick made his statement on May 8, and IAG announced the specified aircraft order on May 9. That timing provides context, but the cited announcements do not establish that the trade arrangement caused the purchase or set its terms.

Have the aircraft been delivered or entered service?
IAG’s FY2025 results confirm the order, but the cited materials do not establish current delivery progress or when the ordered aircraft will enter passenger service. The announced allocation is not evidence that deliveries are complete or that the aircraft are already flying for British Airways or another IAG airline.
