What Happened to the Steam Antitrust Lawsuit? The Case Took Two Different Paths

The Steam antitrust litigation followed separate tracks: consumer claims went to arbitration while developers continued in court. A later stay lift did not decide whether Valve violated antitrust law.

The Steam antitrust case was not simply dismissed and then revived as one lawsuit. Valve sent the consumer plaintiffs to arbitration, while the developers’ class action continued in court. A later order lifted the stay on most of the named consumers’ claims, returning them to the court track—but that procedural change was not a ruling that Valve broke antitrust law.

What happened to the Steam antitrust lawsuit?

Wolfire Games and individual consumers filed a proposed class action against Valve in April 2021 over its Steam platform. Valve argued that the Steam Subscriber Agreement required the consumer plaintiffs to arbitrate their disputes. In October 2021, the court ordered those consumers to arbitration.

The developer plaintiffs’ proposed class action followed a different route: it continued in court. Related cases were consolidated in 2022 under the caption In re Valve Antitrust Litigation. The litigation therefore had separate procedural tracks rather than one case that vanished altogether.

Track What happened
Named consumer plaintiffs The court ordered them to arbitration in October 2021. A later court order says the stay on their claims, except Ryan Lally’s, was lifted on February 19, 2025.
Developer/publisher class The proposed developer class continued litigating in court and later became the Publisher Class in the consolidated action.

The February 2025 order is a concrete reason to say that some consumer claims returned to the court process. It does not establish that the court reversed a single dismissal of the entire antitrust case. The exact order and reasoning behind the “dismissed and revived” framing are not established by the court materials described here.

Did the Steam lawsuit get dismissed?

Not as a whole, based on the procedural history established here. The consumer claims were sent to arbitration, while the developer class kept litigating in court. A stay on most named consumer plaintiffs’ court claims was later lifted. Calling that sequence a total dismissal followed by revival blurs the distinction between arbitration, a stay, and the court case that continued.

Arbitration developments also changed the landscape. An order in a related proceeding recounts that an arbitrator dismissed four arbitrations in July 2024, allowing those claimants to pursue their claims in court. On September 26, 2024, Valve removed the arbitration provision and class-action waiver from the Steam Subscriber Agreement and added a retroactive forum-selection provision requiring disputes to be brought in King County, Washington.

In a related 2026 dispute, Judge Jamal N. Whitehead denied Valve’s motion for a preliminary injunction. That decision concerned arbitration and the revised agreement; it was not a final decision on whether Valve violated antitrust law.

What do the plaintiffs allege?

In their June 2025 consolidated amended complaint, the plaintiffs allege that Valve’s platform policies and pricing practices restrain competition in PC game distribution, downloadable content (DLC), and in-game purchases. They invoke Sections 1 and 2 of the Sherman Act and Washington’s Consumer Protection Act.

Those are allegations in a complaint, not findings by a judge. The procedural orders described above concern where and how claims may proceed; they do not establish antitrust liability, damages, or a right to a consumer refund.

What does this mean for Steam users?

The court developments described here do not announce compensation, a settlement, or a change to Steam prices or service. They concern the path through which certain disputes may proceed. A consumer should not treat the lifting of a stay as proof that Valve owes users money or that a class has won its case.
