The game returned in December 2025 as SPLITGATE: Arena Reloaded, but the studio announced in August 2026 that active development was ending and that it planned to move the game to peer-to-peer hosting.
Why 1047 Games took Splitgate 2 back to beta
Splitgate 2 launched on June 6, 2025. On July 22, the studio acknowledged the launch had come too soon: co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian wrote, “We’ve heard your feedback and we agree with you: we launched too early.” They announced a return to beta and a substantial rebuild, describing it as a long-term commitment rather than a quick fix. Read the July 2025 announcement on Steam.
The planned reset was meant to refocus the game on arena combat, movement, gunplay and portal use. The studio also cited the cost of operating the original Splitgate’s servers as part of its explanation for redirecting resources. Its announcement said it had spent “hundreds of thousands of dollars” on those servers over the previous couple of years, without giving an exact total.
What the studio said about staff cuts
1047 Games said it would reduce certain roles and redirect resources toward rebuilding the game. It said affected employees would receive severance and job-placement support, but did not state how many roles were affected. A separate July 2026 report by Game Developer, based on employee farewell posts, described a further round of layoffs; it quoted an employee calling it the “third wave of studio layoffs.” That reporting does not establish a reliable total headcount. Splitgate 2’s 2026 rerelease became Arena Reloaded
The return to beta was not followed by a 2026 rerelease under the Splitgate 2 name. On December 17, 2025, 1047 Games announced SPLITGATE: Arena Reloaded, a free-to-play evolution of Splitgate 2 for PC and consoles. The studio presented it as a return to classic arena combat, without factions or abilities, and listed rebuilt progression, a Classic Arena mode, an overhauled ranked system, player stats and leaderboards, and new and reworked maps. These were features described by the studio at the time of announcement, not a guarantee that every detail remained unchanged afterward. See the Arena Reloaded announcement.
The studio’s earlier stated creative direction was “Arena-first,” with movement, gunplay and portal combat at the center. Its explanation of the rework direction.

Why development ended and what happened to the servers
On August 26, 2026, 1047 Games announced that active development on Arena Reloaded and Empulse was ending. The studio said neither game generated enough revenue to support dedicated-server costs. It planned to move both games to peer-to-peer hosting with a server browser on September 3, ending dedicated servers and matchmaking. GamingOnLinux reproduced the studio’s explanation: “The reality is that neither game is generating enough revenue to support the ongoing cost of dedicated servers.” Read the report.
The announcement set out a planned hosting transition; the cited reporting does not establish whether it was completed on every platform. Peer-to-peer hosting also differs from dedicated servers: players’ connections are used to host matches rather than relying on the studio’s dedicated infrastructure.
