Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover is complete: Arise Capital Partners LLC bought the club in May 2026. The 15-point deduction reported as a possibility in April was not imposed; joint administrator BTG said Wednesday would start the upcoming season on zero points. That proposed penalty was separate from the automatic 12-point deduction the EFL said followed the club’s entry into administration in October 2025.
How the takeover story unfolded
- 24 October 2025 — administration began. The EFL said it had received formal notice that Dejphon Chansiri had taken steps to appoint administrators to Sheffield Wednesday and the company that owns Hillsborough. The EFL said administration triggered an automatic 12-point deduction and offered a route toward a sale and new ownership. EFL statement, 24 October 2025.
- 10 March 2026 — Arise became preferred bidder. Sheffield Wednesday said its joint administrators selected Arise Capital Partners LLC after the previous bidder withdrew. The club identified the consortium as David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin. It said Arise had paid a substantial deposit and provided evidence of funds. Under an exclusivity agreement, Arise also committed to cover trading losses if the transaction had not completed after eight weeks. Sheffield Wednesday statement, 10 March 2026.
- 15 April 2026 — a 15-point penalty was reported as a prospect. BBC Sport reported that the EFL had told the preferred bidder Wednesday would start the next season with a 15-point deduction. The report said the proposed offer fell short of a stated creditor-payment threshold. David Storch disputed the decision and said the consortium had requested independent arbitration. His objection was the bidder’s position, not an independent finding by the EFL. BBC Sport, 15 April 2026.
- 2–5 May 2026 — the sale completed and the proposed penalty was waived. BBC Sport reported on 2 May that Arise had bought the club and that the EFL would not impose the 15-point deduction after Wednesday exited administration. On 5 May, joint administrator BTG confirmed completion of the sale and said the EFL had exercised its discretion not to apply that deduction. BTG said the club would begin the upcoming season on zero points. BTG completion announcement, 5 May 2026.

Who bought Sheffield Wednesday?
Arise Capital Partners LLC completed the purchase in early May 2026. The club had named it preferred bidder in March, describing the consortium as comprising David Storch, Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The preferred-bidder announcement also set out the deposit, evidence-of-funds and eight-week trading-loss commitment; it was not itself confirmation that the sale had completed. Sheffield Wednesday, 10 March 2026; BTG, 5 May 2026.

What takeover rules apply now?
The EFL describes a club takeover as an “acquisition of control” and says acquisitions are subject to EFL requirements and the Independent Football Regulator’s Owners, Directors and Senior Executives regime. The EFL says that regime began on 5 May 2026 and requires IFR approval before a person becomes an owner or takes a specified senior role. Its stated assessment areas include honesty and integrity, financial soundness, financial resources and competence. This is general regulatory guidance; it does not establish the reason for the EFL’s decision on Wednesday’s proposed points deduction. EFL guidance on owners and directors.
