Prince’s estate was valued at $156.4 million in a 2022 settlement that ended a six-year dispute over its worth. That figure was an agreed estate-tax valuation—not a cash balance or the amount paid to his heirs. The distribution included cash, music rights and other intangible assets.
How the estate’s value was settled
Prince died in April 2016 without a will. His estate went through Minnesota probate, with his six siblings identified as heirs or holders of interests through the proceeding. The estate’s value became a point of dispute between its administrator, Comerica Bank & Trust, and the IRS.

| Figure | Who set or reported it | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| $82.3 million | Comerica Bank & Trust, as reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune on January 14, 2022 | The estate administrator’s initial appraisal |
| $163.2 million | IRS, as reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune on January 14, 2022 | The IRS’s valuation of the estate |
| $156.4 million | Agreed in a settlement disclosed in a Carver County probate filing and reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune on January 14, 2022 | The settled estate-tax valuation |
These are competing valuations and the negotiated resolution, not three separate payouts. The final agreed figure was close to the IRS’s assessment, but it was not an amount the family received as cash.
Why Prince’s estate was difficult to value
The dispute covered more than property and bank accounts. It involved real estate, music rights, and Prince’s name and likeness—assets whose value can depend on future income and commercial use. A valuation-industry summary also identifies NPG Records and NPG Music Publishing among the assets at issue.

The settlement documents reviewed for the Value Management Inc. Winter 2022 summary did not disclose a final agreed value for each asset category. So the $156.4 million figure cannot be broken down reliably into a specific value for the catalog, real estate, or other holdings.
What happened to the money and music rights
Three inheritors sold their interests to Primary Wave. In August 2022, a judge approved an agreement that completed the probate distribution process. The agreement allocated $6 million in cash, along with a much larger amount in music rights and other intangible assets, among Primary Wave, remaining heirs and their families, and advisers, according to The Guardian’s August 2, 2022 report.

That account describes a mix of assets, not an equal cash split among the heirs. It does not provide a complete beneficiary-by-beneficiary ledger or establish what each person ultimately kept after taxes and other costs.
Taxes, penalties, and what the figures do not tell you
As part of the settlement, the IRS dropped a $6.4 million accuracy-related penalty, the Star Tribune reported. Minnesota’s Department of Revenue also dropped an accuracy penalty, according to the same report. The available reporting does not reconcile the complete final tax bill or each heir’s after-tax proceeds.
Rank #3
- Estate valuation: the agreed $156.4 million figure used to resolve the valuation dispute.
- Cash distribution: $6 million was reported as part of the 2022 distribution agreement.
- Rights and other assets: music rights and other intangibles made up a substantially larger portion of the distribution than cash, but the reporting does not itemize each beneficiary’s allocation.
- Current value: the settlement figure is historical; it does not establish the present value of Prince’s catalog or any heir’s current net worth.
Prince’s music continued to be released
The estate process unfolded alongside posthumous releases and reissues. The Guardian noted back-catalog reissues of Purple Rain, 1999, and Sign o’ the Times, as well as the release of Welcome 2 America. Those projects show that the music remained active commercially, but they do not by themselves establish a current catalog valuation.

The reliable headline is that Prince’s estate was agreed to be worth $156.4 million for estate-tax purposes in 2022, after Comerica’s $82.3 million appraisal and the IRS’s $163.2 million valuation. His heirs did not simply divide that amount in cash: the distribution involved music rights and other assets, and some interests had already been sold to Primary Wave.
Available reporting does not support a precise figure for any individual heir’s net proceeds or a current value for the estate’s music assets. The valuation, distribution, tax outcome, and ongoing ownership of rights are related but distinct questions.
