Just Sam, the stage name of Samantha Diaz, won American Idol season 18 in May 2020. Since then, they have parted ways with their record label, released independent music, returned to subway busking and performed on the show again. Recent reporting also says they were taking bookings for events and residency gigs in late 2025. There is no reliable, transparent estimate showing that their net worth increased—or establishing a dependable figure for it.
How Just Sam won American Idol
Sam won the show’s pandemic-era 2020 season. Contestants performed remotely, and Sam sang Andra Day’s “Rise Up” from quarantine before the winner was announced on May 17. ABC’s account of the finale and The Washington Post’s reporting describe the unusual circumstances.

What Just Sam did after winning
1. Signed a record deal
On May 18, 2020, Hollywood Records announced that Sam had signed an exclusive record deal with the label and Industrial Media’s 19 Recordings. The announcement is available from Hollywood Records.
2. Parted ways with the label before releasing an album
The Washington Post reported that Sam and the label separated less than a year later, before an album came out. Its account describes pandemic disruption and a slow start to studio work; it does not establish that one factor alone caused the split. The Post’s December 2023 report provides that context.

3. Released music independently
After the label deal, Sam pursued independent releases. The Washington Post named “Change” and “Africando” among songs available on streaming services when it reported on Sam in December 2023. In a 2022 Instagram Story quoted by Just Jared, Sam said they were writing and recording but could not afford mixing and mastering. They also said they had spent money trying to claim songs recorded before leaving the label.
4. Returned to subway busking
Sam posted videos of subway performances in 2023. The Washington Post reported that financial hardship—including difficulty covering rent and food—was behind the return to busking. That account documents a difficult period; it is not a measure of Sam’s total assets or financial position over time. The Washington Post

5. Returned to the American Idol stage
In April 2024, Sam performed Whitney Houston’s “One Moment in Time” on the show. The Washington Post noted that the appearance gave Sam a stage and confetti moment they had missed during the remote 2020 finale. The Post’s report
6. Became a parent
TV Insider reported on December 9, 2025, that Sam had given birth in September 2025. TV Insider’s report attributes the update to Sam’s social post.

7. Took bookings for events and residency gigs
The same TV Insider report said Sam was taking bookings for weddings, parties, galas, funerals and other events, as well as residency gigs, citing a social post dated November 15, 2025. This is a time-specific update, not confirmation that those bookings remain open today. TV Insider
Has Just Sam’s net worth increased?
There is no reliable net-worth estimate in the reporting cited here, and no sourced before-and-after figures that would demonstrate an increase. Online claims that give a specific figure without a transparent calculation should not be treated as verified. Financial hardship reported in 2023 also cannot, by itself, establish a person’s net worth.
The Washington Post cited a $250,000 amount as the recent American Idol winner contract figure in its 2023 reporting: $125,000 at the win and $125,000 on album delivery. That was contract context, not a verified statement of what Sam personally received, took home or owned. It should not be used as their net worth. The Washington Post

An IMDb-hosted syndicated summary credited to The Things and dated May 3, 2024, says Sam faced financial difficulty, released “Africando” and appeared more confident. It does not enumerate seven developments or document a net-worth calculation. Its headline framing therefore does not establish that Sam’s net worth rose. IMDb’s syndicated summary
