What Happened to GrooveBook From Shark Tank Season 5?

GrooveBook was not a failed Shark Tank business: it secured a deal with Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary, sold to Shutterfly for an announced $14.5 million, and was later discontinued.

GrooveBook was a Shark Tank success before its original service was eventually discontinued. Founders Brian and Julie Whiteman accepted $150,000 from Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary in exchange for 80% of GrooveBook’s licensing rights on Season 5. About 10 months later, Shutterfly announced that it was acquiring GrooveBook for $14.5 million, including a performance-based earn-out. Later reporting says Shutterfly discontinued the GrooveBook app, subscriptions, and services in April 2022.

What was GrooveBook?

GrooveBook was a smartphone photo-book subscription service created by married entrepreneurs Brian and Julie Whiteman. Through an iPhone or Android app, customers selected up to 100 photos from their phones each month. GrooveBook printed those images in a compact 4.5-by-6.5-inch book and mailed it to the subscriber.

The original advertised price was $2.99 per month, including shipping. Its flexible, grooved binding helped keep the books inexpensive and practical for routine photo printing rather than occasional premium gifts. The idea addressed a familiar problem: people were taking large numbers of smartphone photos but rarely turning them into physical keepsakes.

Shutterfly’s acquisition announcement described the product’s format, price, and mobile-photo focus.

What happened on Shark Tank?

Brian and Julie Whiteman appeared on Shark Tank Season 5. Episode listings place the broadcast on January 10, 2014. They were seeking capital to expand the service.

Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary ultimately made the offer the Whitemans accepted: $150,000 for 80% of GrooveBook’s licensing rights, according to ABC News.

That wording is important. The deal was reported as covering 80% of the licensing rights—not necessarily 80% ownership of every part of the company. Many online summaries simplify the agreement into “the Sharks took 80% of GrooveBook,” which can give a misleading picture of the transaction.

O’Leary continued to be associated with the business as an investor and mentor. He also appeared in coverage of the later Shutterfly transaction.

Did GrooveBook succeed after Shark Tank?

Yes. The company benefited from the exposure generated by the episode. Brian Whiteman told ABC that GrooveBook gained 50,000 paid subscribers within days of its appearance. ABC also reported that the company had taken 13 months to reach its first 35,000 paid customers.

Shutterfly later described substantial increases in downloads, photo uploads, and subscribers after the broadcast. These figures came from contemporary company and founder statements, so they should be treated as reported business metrics rather than independently audited results. Even with that qualification, the acquisition provides clear evidence that GrooveBook created significant value after the show.

Who bought GrooveBook?

Shutterfly, Inc. announced on November 17, 2014, that it had acquired GrooveBook for $14.5 million. The announced consideration included an upfront payment and a future performance-based earn-out. The Whitemans were expected to assist Shutterfly as consultants during the transition.

Shutterfly said the acquisition would strengthen its mobile photo-book business. At the time, ABC described the transaction as the largest sale of a Shark Tank-pitched company and the first acquisition of a company from the program by a publicly traded company. Those descriptions were accurate in the contemporary context; they should not be read as a current all-time record.

The commonly reported headline value is $14.5 million because that is the figure in Shutterfly’s official announcement and contemporary ABC coverage. Some later summaries round the amount to approximately $14 million. Also, $14.5 million was the announced transaction value, not necessarily the amount paid entirely in cash at closing: the earn-out depended on future performance.

Nor does the sale price equal the Whitemans’ personal take-home proceeds. Ownership arrangements, taxes, expenses, investor rights, and the earn-out would affect the founders’ eventual proceeds, and those details are not established by the headline figure.

When did GrooveBook shut down?

According to later reporting, Shutterfly discontinued the GrooveBook app, subscriptions, and related services in April 2022. The available reporting does not establish a specific public reason for the shutdown.

Shutterfly did confirm that GrooveBook operations experienced interruptions during a ransomware incident affecting parts of its business in December 2021. However, the company’s statement does not say that the incident caused GrooveBook’s eventual discontinuation. It would be speculation to attribute the shutdown to the cyberattack, profitability, product quality, or weak demand without a direct statement from Shutterfly.

The end of the consumer service also does not prove that every corporate entity associated with GrooveBook immediately dissolved. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the standalone GrooveBook service was retired after Shutterfly acquired the business.

Is GrooveBook still available?

No. The original GrooveBook subscription is not presented as an active service in Shutterfly’s current materials. Shutterfly continues to sell conventional photo books, prints, cards, gifts, and other personalized photo products, but those offerings are not the same as GrooveBook’s original $2.99 monthly booklet.

What happened to Brian and Julie Whiteman?

Public information about the Whitemans’ lives after the acquisition is limited. Later reporting says Brian Whiteman’s printing company, Dot Graphics, was sold to GPA Global in July 2019. A GPA-related company described him as Dot Graphics’ founder and president at the time.

The available evidence does not reliably establish the couple’s current occupations, residence, net worth, or whether they are involved in another startup. Claims that they retired, became wealthy investors, or launched a particular new venture should therefore be treated cautiously.

The GrooveBook timeline

Date What happened
January 10, 2014 The Whitemans’ Season 5 Shark Tank episode was listed as airing.
January 2014 They accepted $150,000 from Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary for 80% of the licensing rights.
November 17, 2014 Shutterfly announced a $14.5 million acquisition, including an earn-out.
July 2019 Brian Whiteman’s Dot Graphics was reportedly sold to GPA Global.
December 2021 Shutterfly said GrooveBook operations were among those affected by a ransomware incident.
April 2022 Later reporting said Shutterfly discontinued GrooveBook services and subscriptions.

Was GrooveBook a failure?

Calling GrooveBook a failure misses the most important part of the story. Its original consumer service did not last indefinitely, but the company gained customers rapidly after Shark Tank and was acquired by Shutterfly for an announced $14.5 million less than a year after the episode aired.

The more accurate description is that GrooveBook was a successful startup exit whose standalone product was later retired. The acquisition and the eventual shutdown are separate events: one reflects the value Shutterfly saw in the business, while the other marks the end of the original consumer-facing subscription.
