Gary Coleman earned substantial income as the star of Diff’rent Strokes, but his later finances included a dispute over money managed on his behalf and a bankruptcy filing in 1999. His exact net worth when he died in 2010 is not established by an official estate accounting in the available reporting. Celebrity Net Worth lists $75,000, but that is a secondary estimate, not a verified probate figure.

How Coleman earned his money

Coleman played Arnold Jackson on Diff’rent Strokes, which ran from 1978 to 1986 for eight seasons across NBC and ABC. The Television Academy says the series brought him international fame. That success explains why later accounts discuss a substantial fortune, but fame and reported earnings do not tell us how much money he retained or what assets he owned decades later.

What the lawsuit established—and what it did not

In 1993, Coleman pursued a case involving his parents and former manager. United Press International reported that a judge found $1.28 million in commissions, salaries, fees and pension distributions had been wrongly taken from him between 1982 and 1987. The Television Academy later reported that Coleman was awarded $1.3 million. UPI also said the case settled, but the settlement terms were not disclosed. The reported finding and award therefore should not be treated as proof that Coleman ultimately received or kept a specific amount.

These figures describe a dispute over money handled during his career; they do not provide a complete account of his income, expenses, assets or debts. They also do not establish that the dispute alone caused his later financial circumstances.

Why bankruptcy matters to the story

The Television Academy reports that Coleman filed for bankruptcy in 1999. It is a significant point in his financial history, but the reporting cited here does not provide enough detail to reconstruct his bankruptcy estate or determine what remained after the case. Bankruptcy is not itself a final measure of a person’s wealth years later.

Was he worth $18 million at his peak?

The Los Angeles Times recounted widely circulated estimates of Coleman’s peak fortune, including a reported $18 million figure. Such estimates are not the same as a verified financial statement, and they do not show the value of his estate at death. A peak-fortune estimate, an amount involved in litigation, a bankruptcy filing and a later net-worth estimate refer to different things and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.

How much was Coleman worth when he died?

Coleman died in 2010 at age 42. Celebrity Net Worth’s page, updated February 10, 2025, estimates his net worth at death at $75,000. That is a secondary estimate; the sources cited here do not establish an official final estate valuation or audited net-worth figure.

After Coleman’s death, his Diff’rent Strokes co-star Todd Bridges told Entertainment Tonight that Coleman had been bilked of $18 million and referred to an alleged secret will. Those are Bridges’s claims as reported in the interview, not established findings about Coleman’s final assets. They do not verify either a lost $18 million or the value and contents of an estate.
