What Happened to Avicii’s Reported $50 Million Net Worth?

The often-cited $50 million figure is an estimate, not a documented inheritance. Contemporaneous 2018 reports said Avicii—born Tim Bergling—left no will and that his parents were to receive his remaining estate. Those reports put the amount at about 231 million Swedish kronor, or roughly $25.5 million at the time, after debts and taxes. The available evidence does not show that his parents received $50 million in cash.

Why the $50 million figure is not the same as his inheritance

“Net worth” estimates are not probate records. They may attempt to value assets such as music rights and other property, while an estate’s remaining value reflects liabilities and the rules governing its distribution. The reviewed sources do not establish the exact basis of every $50 million estimate, so that figure should not be treated as a verified estate balance or cash inheritance.

In December 2018, Billboard Japan and EDM.com reported that Bergling had no will and that his parents, Klas Bergling and Anki Lidén, were set to inherit his remaining financial estate. EDM.com attributed the approximately 231 million SEK figure—roughly US$25.5 million at the time—to Swedish newspaper Expressen’s account of Swedish Tax Agency documents. Billboard also covered the inheritance details. These are contemporaneous secondary reports, not a direct review of the estate file. Billboard Japan’s report and EDM.com’s report describe a reported historical amount, not a current valuation.

What happened to the estate and music-related income

His parents inherited the reported remaining estate

The 2018 reporting identifies Bergling’s parents as the heirs to his remaining financial estate. It does not prove that they inherited the commonly cited $50 million estimate, nor does it establish that the reported 231 million SEK was paid to them as cash.

The foundation received contributions and project revenue

The Tim Bergling Foundation says it received significant contributions from the estate and continues to receive future revenue from Avicii projects. It does not quantify those contributions or say that the foundation received the entire estate. The foundation’s official website describes its work.

Net proceeds from TIM were designated for the foundation

In an April 5, 2019 announcement, Universal Music Canada, speaking for Team Avicii, said: “Avicii’s net proceeds from the album will go to the nonprofit Tim Bergling Foundation and the purposes it will work for, among other things, to prevent mental illness and suicide.” The wording concerns Bergling’s net proceeds from the posthumous album TIM; it does not say that all album revenue, all future music income, or every estate asset went to the foundation. Universal Music Canada’s announcement gives the stated terms.

What the 2022 Pophouse deal changed

On September 28, 2022, Pophouse Entertainment announced that it acquired 75% ownership in Avicii’s master recordings and publishing. His family and estate retained 25% and formed a joint venture with Pophouse. The company said the arrangement gave Bergling’s parents room to step back from some estate-management work and helped secure the foundation’s long-term finances.

Klas Bergling said in the announcement: “Through this deal, we are also securing the Tim Bergling Foundation’s long-term finances, creating opportunity to act decisively on the Foundation’s commitments to supporting such important issues as mental health and well-being of young people.” The announcement did not disclose the purchase price or a detailed royalty split. The deal concerned 75% ownership of the masters and publishing—not 100% of Avicii’s rights. Pophouse’s announcement sets out the ownership arrangement.

What is—and is not—known about Avicii’s wealth today

The 231 million SEK figure is a reported 2018 estate or inheritance amount, not a current valuation. Pophouse’s 2022 announcement reported that Avicii had more than 30 million monthly Spotify listeners and that his top ten Spotify tracks had nearly 8 billion combined streams. Those are historical figures published by Pophouse in 2022, not current listener or stream counts.

The reviewed official material does not disclose the estate’s current value, annual catalog royalties, the Pophouse purchase price, or a detailed division of royalty payments. Without those figures, it is not possible to calculate how much his heirs or the foundation receive today. The catalog deal, the estate contributions, and the TIM proceeds are distinct arrangements; none establishes that the original $50 million estimate was inherited or donated in full.
