The benefit applies to eligible items and addresses, not every product or order. For a specific purchase, the delivery date shown after you set your address—and confirmed at checkout—is the useful answer. A slower estimate for one order does not establish that two-day shipping ended nationwide.
What Prime’s two-day benefit covers now
Amazon’s U.S. Prime delivery-benefits page still lists free Two-Day Delivery alongside One-Day, Same-Day delivery on qualifying orders, Amazon Day, and no-rush shipping. It also lists free standard delivery of four to five business days. Same-Day delivery is subject to a minimum in most areas. These terms are U.S.-specific; Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico have different delivery times and may have fees. Amazon’s delivery-benefits page has the current details.
Two-day delivery is not a blanket promise based only on having Prime. Amazon says the product must be marked eligible on its product page and at checkout. Eligible offers include products sold by Amazon, many products fulfilled by Amazon, and qualifying seller offers. Seller-fulfilled items may be eligible only in certain regions. Amazon says nearly all addresses in the contiguous U.S. are covered, but your address affects what is available.
That is why the Prime label alone cannot tell you when a particular package will arrive. Check the date after setting your delivery address, and confirm it again at checkout.

Why a Prime order may take longer than two days
The item is not ready to ship
Amazon says that if an item is out of stock or cannot ship immediately, the shipping-method clock starts when the item ships—not necessarily when you place the order. Availability can vary by quantity and location, so a different quantity or stock position may produce a different estimate.
The order misses a cutoff or crosses a weekend
Order cutoff times matter. Amazon measures delivery speed in business days unless weekend delivery is shown, so two days does not always mean two calendar days from the moment you click “Place your order.”

The address, offer, or operating conditions affect the estimate
Eligibility depends on the item, who sells or fulfills it, and the delivery address. For a package already in transit, Amazon lists possible causes of delay such as weather, heavy traffic, holiday demand, customs delays on international shipments, and operational problems. Those are possible causes, not an explanation of an individual order without its tracking details. Amazon may use ground or air transport; its delivery speeds do not correspond to a carrier-branded service. Amazon’s late-delivery guidance covers tracking and next steps.
How the benefit changed as Prime expanded
Amazon says Prime launched in 2005 with free two-day delivery on one million items, primarily DVDs, CDs, and books. In a 2026 announcement, the company said U.S. members could get free Prime shipping on more than 300 million items, with tens of millions available for same- or next-day delivery. These are Amazon’s own descriptions of its selection and benefits, not an independent audit. Amazon’s 2026 announcement gives the company’s figures.

The broader mix of delivery speeds reflects changes in Amazon’s network and inventory placement, rather than proof that two-day delivery has disappeared. Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, described the approach in a 2024 account: “We achieved our fastest-ever global shipping speeds last year by focusing on a few key initiatives—shortening the distance our deliveries had to travel to reach customers, improving our inventory placement, and building out our Same-Day Delivery service.” Herrington’s account discusses those network initiatives.
Amazon reported that in 2025 more than 13 billion items arrived the same or next day worldwide, including more than 8 billion in the U.S.; the U.S. total was up more than 30% year over year, according to the company. The figures combine same- and next-day deliveries. They do not measure the share of orders delivered within two days or predict the date for an individual customer. Amazon also said half of its U.S. same- or next-day items delivered in 2025 were groceries and everyday essentials.

What the Washington, D.C. dispute does—and does not—show
In 2024, the District of Columbia alleged that Amazon excluded ZIP codes 20019 and 20020 from a delivery service, and that residents there consequently received two-day delivery less often. The complaint said the rate in those ZIP codes was 24% in 2023, compared with more than 72% in 2021 before the alleged exclusion; the Associated Press reported that the complaint compared the figures with 75% for other parts of the city. Those are allegations in the District’s complaint, not a court finding or a nationwide delivery statistic.
The Associated Press reported Amazon’s response: the company said that since 2022 it had delivered nearly 1.5 million Prime-eligible products in two days or less to customers in the two ZIP codes. Amazon also said it would demonstrate that fast, accurate delivery and delivery-partner safety are compatible. The dispute concerns a localized and contested case; it does not establish a nationwide policy change. The Associated Press reported on the lawsuit and Amazon’s response. The District’s complaint is available through Courthouse News.

How to check a delivery date or deal with a delay
- Set the correct delivery address on the product page so Amazon can show the options available where you live.
- Check the item’s Prime eligibility and offer. Confirm the product page marks it eligible, and note whether Amazon or a qualifying seller is selling or fulfilling it.
- Review the delivery date at checkout. Consider stock availability, quantity, cutoff time, and whether the estimate is in business days.
- If the package is late, check tracking and carrier notifications. Amazon advises allowing 48 hours after the estimated date for an unexpected delay.
- If there is still no update after 48 hours, contact the right party. Amazon says to contact customer support for Amazon-shipped orders or the third-party seller if that seller shipped the package. A missed guaranteed delivery date may qualify for a refund of shipping fees.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
