Some opening-weekend audiences turned the “chicken jockey” moment in A Minecraft Movie into a loud, messy event: reports described shouting, cheering and thrown popcorn or drinks. The incidents prompted warnings and other venue responses in parts of the US and UK, but they did not describe every screening. Some showings were quiet.
Why audiences reacted to the “chicken jockey” scene
The moment comes when a baby zombie rides a chicken and Jack Black’s character calls out, “Chicken jockey!” The phrase is a reference to Minecraft, and clips of viewers reacting to it spread on TikTok. The Guardian’s April 9, 2025, report linked the viral trend to audience members cheering, shouting and throwing popcorn at screenings in the UK and US. The Guardian’s report also described Cineworld special showings intended to let fans participate more vocally, under the message: “No mess please, just good clean fun.”
What theaters did in response
Responses differed by venue. Some theaters warned patrons they could be ejected for disruptive behavior; others imposed conditions for minors or added security. These were local measures, not a single policy adopted by cinemas everywhere.
| Venue or response | What was reported |
|---|---|
| UK cinemas | The Guardian reported that some venues warned patrons they could be ejected. Cineworld also offered designated participatory showings. The Guardian, April 9, 2025 |
| Township Theatre, Washington Township, New Jersey | The theater restricted minors from attending without an adult after an “unfortunate situation,” with reports of vandalism and complaints from other moviegoers. ABC News, April 14, 2025 |
| Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatres, Utah | Axios reported added security and a warning that disruptive patrons could be escorted out by police; property damage could lead to charges. Axios Salt Lake City, April 14, 2025 |
| Designated participatory screenings | Cineworld offered special showings where fans could be more vocal; the reporting did not establish that this approach was used by all chains. The Guardian, April 9, 2025 |
Viral clips do not show how common disruptions were
Reports and social-media footage establish that disruptive incidents happened, not how many screenings were affected. The Guardian also described quiet early-afternoon screenings in Manchester. No cited source provided a measured share or rate of disrupted showings, so it would be inaccurate to treat the viral clips as representative of all moviegoers.

The film’s opening and the reactions from its director and star
A Minecraft Movie opened in the US on April 4, 2025. The Associated Press reported studio estimates on April 6 of $157 million in US and Canadian ticket sales, $144 million internationally and a $301 million global debut. Those were estimates at that date, not final audited totals. The Guardian later reported about $314 million worldwide in its April 9 coverage; the figures reflect reporting at different points and should not be combined into one total. Associated Press, April 6, 2025 · The Guardian, April 9, 2025
Director Jared Hess treated the trend as a strange by-product of a lively moviegoing moment, telling ABC News, “It’s weird when you’re having too much fun and the cops get called,” and adding, “I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.” Those remarks were his personal reaction, not a statement of theater policy. Jack Black also addressed the messier behavior. The Los Angeles Times reported that he disguised his voice as a theater spokesperson to tell moviegoers, “for today’s presentation of ‘A Minecraft Movie,’ please no throwing popped corn.” Los Angeles Times, April 14, 2025
