Cook’s remarks appeared in the club statement reported on 2 January 2024; the available account does not establish that he gave a separate interview.
What Garry Cook said about Rooney’s dismissal
After Birmingham announced Rooney’s departure on 2 January 2024, Cook said: “Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the club.” BBC Sport reported Cook’s statement as the club’s explanation for the decision.
Cook also said the board and management were “fully aligned” and would continue to take “bold steps” to rebuild Birmingham City. His comments describe the board’s stated rationale; they do not independently establish that results were the sole cause of the dismissal.
Rooney’s record when Birmingham made the decision
Rooney had been in charge for 83 days and 15 matches. Birmingham were 20th in the Championship, and his final game was a 3–0 defeat away to Leeds United on New Year’s Day. He had earned 10 points and lost nine of those 15 matches, according to BBC Sport’s report. These are figures from the time of his dismissal, not current standings or employment information.

How Rooney responded
Rooney acknowledged that results had not reached the level he wanted. He also said he did not believe 13 weeks was enough time to oversee the changes he thought were needed. That was Rooney’s view of the time available; Cook’s statement, by contrast, set out the board’s results-based reasoning. BBC Sport reported both statements.

Birmingham appointed Tony Mowbray on 8 January 2024, six days after Rooney’s dismissal, on a two-and-a-half-year deal. Cook called Mowbray “the right leader at the right time for our club,” according to BBC Sport’s appointment report.
