For a typical Starlink installation, you need the Starlink dish (terminal), its power supply and cables, and a base or kickstand. A Wi-Fi router is included with some kits but not all, so check the exact model before buying one separately. You also need a location with a clear view of the sky; an optional mount is useful when the dish must be installed permanently on a roof, wall, or pole.
What equipment comes with a Starlink kit?
Starlink’s general kit list includes a terminal, power supply, cables, a base, and a Wi-Fi router. Router inclusion depends on the model: the Mini, Performance, Performance Gen 2, and Enterprise kits do not include one, according to Starlink’s kit contents guidance. Contents and cable types can also differ across generations, so identify your kit before planning the installation.

These are examples, not universal kit contents. Starlink’s kit-identification guide lists multiple families, including Standard 4 X, Standard 4, Mini, Performance Gen 3, Standard Actuated, Enterprise, Performance Gen 1 and Gen 2, and Standard Circular. Use the setup information for the exact model you own; connectors, bases, routers, and cable lengths may differ.
Do you need to buy a router separately?
Only if your kit does not include one or you choose to use a different router. Standard 4 X includes Router 3, while the Mini, Performance, Performance Gen 2, and Enterprise kits are listed as router-free in Starlink’s kit guidance. Performance Gen 3’s setup guide describes a separate Performance Router 3 Kit and instructions for connecting a third-party router. Check your kit’s guide and the requirements for the router you plan to use before purchasing additional equipment.

Do you need a special mount?
Not for every installation. The included kickstand can support ground-level placement or an initial setup to test the connection. If you want a permanent elevated installation—such as on a roof, pole, or wall—you may need an optional mount and cable-routing accessories. Starlink offers different mounting and installation accessories; check compatibility with your terminal model and installation surface before buying.
Where can you put the dish?
Choose a location with a clear view of the sky so the terminal can maintain its satellite connection. Starlink says obstructions can cause service interruptions and recommends checking a proposed site with the obstruction tool in the Starlink app. Test the location before committing to a permanent mount. What should you check before buying accessories?
- Exact kit and generation: Confirm the model rather than assuming another Starlink kit’s parts will fit.
- Router: Verify whether your kit includes one and whether your planned network setup needs an additional router.
- Cable reach and type: Compare the included cable arrangement with the distance between the dish, power supply, router, and power location. The Standard 4 X and Performance Gen 3 examples above have different cables and lengths.
- Mounting surface: Decide whether the kickstand is suitable for your placement or whether the installation needs an optional elevated mount.
- Installation complexity: Starlink says certified professional installers may be available for unusual installation challenges; availability depends on location. Details are in its installation guidance.
