What Employers Mean by “Equivalent Experience” in a Job Posting

Equivalent experience can let relevant skills and work stand in for a credential, but the employer’s posting and rules—not a universal formula—decide what counts.

“Equivalent experience” means an employer may accept relevant skills and knowledge gained through work, training, or other experience instead of a stated credential. It does not mean there is a universal number of years that replaces a degree: the posting and the employer’s rules determine whether substitution is allowed and how your background will be assessed.

What “equivalent experience” means

When a posting says “degree or equivalent experience,” it usually gives the employer a way to consider candidates who can demonstrate the required knowledge and ability without the named credential. The phrase is not self-defining, however. Some employers specify what counts; others require a formal qualification unless an authorized recruiting official approves an alternative.

For example, NHS Business Services Authority guidance allows substitution only when the job description or person specification names “qualification or equivalent experience” as an essential criterion and an authorized recruiting official accepts the alternative. Read the NHS Business Services Authority qualification guidance.

Does a certain number of years equal a degree?

No. There is no universal years-for-degree conversion. Employers set their own criteria, and some do not permit substitution at all. Years alone are a poor measure: relevance to the field, similarity of duties, level of responsibility, and the employer’s stated requirements can matter as much as duration.

Employer examples show why a general formula would be misleading:

Employer or hiring system How experience is treated Scope
Fairfax County Department of Human Resources Its published schedule allows four years of relevant professional-level experience to substitute for a bachelor’s degree in specified cases. It uses 2,080 hours—40 hours per week for 52 weeks—as one full-time experience year and prorates part-time work. Fairfax County’s own equivalency rules; not a general standard. Source.
MIT Directly comparable work receives full credit; related work with transferable skills may receive prorated credit; unrelated experience receives no credit. MIT’s own assessment approach. Source.
U.S. Department of the Interior hiring review Reviewers assess relevant specialized experience against stated duties and level. Its guidance describes a 52-week full-time year for the specified assessment. Federal hiring-assessment guidance, not a degree conversion rule. Source.
USAJOBS announcement 887006400 The announcement required one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade and listed the duties applicants had to demonstrate. A particular vacancy, live when reviewed in 2026; check whether it remains active. Announcement.

What employers may assess

Read the posting for the conditions that define acceptable evidence. An employer may compare your experience with the qualification in several ways:

  • Permission: Does the posting explicitly allow equivalent experience, or does it make a credential essential?
  • Field: Is your experience in the subject area or occupation specified?
  • Duties and skills: Have you done work that demonstrates the knowledge and abilities the role requires?
  • Level: Did you work with responsibility and complexity comparable to the role or grade sought?
  • Duration and hours: Does the employer require a minimum period, count part-time work proportionally, or set a specific full-time-year calculation?
  • Evidence and approval: What documentation is required, and who has authority to accept an alternative?

For federal hiring, the Interior Department’s review guidance tells assessors to compare applicants’ evidence with the targeted specialized-experience statements and to document their justification. It cautions reviewers, “Do not look for specific keywords”. See the Interior Business Center’s review guidance.

Can work, volunteer experience, internships, or training count?

They may, if the employer’s rules permit them and the experience demonstrates the required skills and level. Fairfax County, MIT, and Interior Department guidance recognize some forms of nontraditional or education-related experience, but their rules differ. Do not assume that an internship, volunteer role, or course will count for a particular vacancy without checking its criteria.

How to show equivalent experience in your application

  1. Read the qualification language closely. Check the job description, required qualifications, and any person specification for whether equivalence is allowed and for specified fields, duties, grade levels, hours, or minimum periods.
  2. Map your evidence to each requirement. For every listed skill or duty, identify a concise example from relevant work, an internship, volunteer activity, or training—provided the employer allows that experience to count.
  3. Give verifiable detail. State your role, dates, hours where relevant, responsibilities, scope, and outcomes. Explain the connection to the target job rather than relying on a broad claim that your experience is equivalent.
  4. Ask about unclear wording. Contact the recruiter or hiring manager to confirm whether experience may replace the credential and what evidence will be assessed. Acceptance may depend on an authorized official.
  5. Prepare to explain the match. In an interview, connect your examples directly to the stated requirements. Torbay Council’s interview guidance says the recruiting manager will discuss how a candidate’s experience and skills demonstrate equivalence. Read Torbay Council’s interview advice.

Fairfax County also advises applicants to “clearly state your qualifications in the application.” See its education and experience equivalencies guidance.

What the phrase does not promise

The wording alone does not guarantee that an employer will waive a degree or that your particular experience will qualify. Employer policies vary, and examples from U.S. public-sector employers, MIT, and UK organizations should not be treated as one shared rule. The actual posting and the employer’s assessment determine whether your background meets the requirement.
