Depending on the Microsoft Store catalog and rules for your region, the balance may pay for game add-ons, apps, movies, TV shows, Xbox subscriptions, and some devices such as controllers. It is not cash or a general-purpose prepaid card.
How an Xbox gift card works
Redeem the code to your Microsoft account first. The value becomes Microsoft account balance, which you can spend through Microsoft Store online, on Windows, or on Xbox where the item is eligible. The card does not work as a payment method at unrelated retailers.

What you may be able to buy

Microsoft describes these eligible categories in its Microsoft Store gift card information and Microsoft Rewards device examples. This is not a guarantee that every listed product is available in every country or can be bought with balance in every checkout situation.

Can you use an Xbox gift card for Game Pass?
Microsoft’s balance guidance says gift-card funds can be used to buy Xbox subscriptions. That makes an eligible Xbox subscription a possible use for the balance, but it does not establish that every plan, region, or renewal setup will accept it. Check the subscription’s checkout screen; some subscriptions may require a credit card or other payment information.
The rules do not extend to every Microsoft subscription. Microsoft says gift-card balance cannot be used to buy Microsoft 365 subscriptions, and its Xbox gift-card FAQ warns that some app subscriptions require a credit card. See Microsoft account balance guidance and the Xbox gift card FAQ.

Can you buy movies, apps, or a controller?
Potentially, if the movie, app, or device is sold in the Microsoft Store for your account’s market and checkout accepts account balance. Microsoft lists apps, movies, and TV shows among store purchases, and describes devices and physical goods as possible uses in participating storefronts. A controller is a specific example identified by Microsoft Rewards, but its availability and balance eligibility still depend on the local store.

Important restrictions
- It is not cash. Microsoft’s terms exclude cash and cash substitutes such as gift certificates, and do not allow use at Microsoft retail locations, subject to applicable law. Read the Microsoft Services Agreement.
- Store and region matter. Funds are subject to participating storefront and account conditions. Microsoft identifies a hardware restriction in Taiwan, so do not assume device purchases are eligible in every market.
- Not every digital purchase is assured. The presence of an app or in-game purchase does not guarantee that Microsoft account balance will be accepted, and certain subscription checkouts require a credit card.
- It does not pay at other retailers. Redeemed balance is for eligible Microsoft Store purchases, not purchases at Amazon or other unaffiliated shops.
How to check before spending
- Redeem the Xbox gift card to the Microsoft account you use for Xbox or Microsoft Store.
- Open the product or subscription listing in the Microsoft Store associated with your account’s region.
- Proceed to checkout and confirm Microsoft account balance appears as an available payment method. For subscriptions, check whether a credit card or other payment detail is also required.
- If the balance is not offered, do not assume the item is eligible; check the local store terms or choose another eligible purchase.
