Elon Musk’s five-field list comes from a 2016 recollection of what interested him in college—not a ranked list of the five most important problems facing the world today. In a separate answer to Sam Altman’s question about what he would work on if he were 22 “today,” Musk focused first on AI, then discussed genetics and the connection between the brain and digital tools.

What were Musk’s five problems?

In a Y Combinator interview published September 15, 2016, Musk recalled five areas he had considered in college:

  1. Making life multi-planetary.
  2. Accelerating the transition to sustainable energy.
  3. The internet, broadly speaking.
  4. Genetics.
  5. Artificial intelligence.

He said he did not expect to become involved in all five, and thought he would begin with the electrification of cars. The list describes his college-era interests as he remembered them in 2016; it is not a ranking. Y Combinator’s interview transcript records the conversation with Sam Altman.

What did he say he would work on at 22?

Altman separately asked Musk what five problems he would consider working on if he were 22 “today.” Musk did not answer with a numbered list of five. He said AI was probably the biggest near-term item likely to affect humanity and called ensuring a good future for AI the most pressing item. He then brought up genetics, including the possibility of addressing genetic diseases and dementia, and the bandwidth limit between the brain and a person’s digital tools.

Those remarks are a discussion of three areas, with AI foregrounded—not the same thing as the five-item college list. The distinction matters: the first answer is a hypothetical about what to pursue in 2016; the second is a retrospective account of interests from Musk’s college years.

How did Musk think about useful work?

Musk argued that a project need not transform the world to be worthwhile. He pointed to small-scale games and improvements to photo sharing as examples of work that could benefit people. As he put it, “Stuff doesn’t need to change the world to be good.”

He also offered a way to think about a project’s potential impact: “Whatever this thing is that you’re trying to create, what would be the utility delta compared to the current state of the art times how many people it would affect.” In other words, consider how much better the work is than what already exists, and how many people could benefit. This is Musk’s personal heuristic, not a validated formula or an objective way to rank problems.

What the interview does—and does not—establish

The conversation captures Musk’s views and predictions at the time it was published. It does not demonstrate that these fields are objectively the world’s most important problems, rank them by severity, or assess how much progress has been made since 2016. The title’s “five most important problems” is best understood as a shorthand for Musk’s recalled areas of interest, not a current, evidence-based global ranking.
