Re:

What Drives Nike’s Revenue, Margins, and Inventory Levels?

Nike’s revenue, margins, and inventory reflect more than demand alone. Here’s how product and channel mix, pricing, costs, currency, and dated inventory balances shaped its latest results.

Nike’s results reflect several forces at once: what shoppers buy, where they buy it, how much they pay, the costs of making and moving products, currency changes, and how Nike manages inventory. In fiscal 2026, revenue was nearly flat as reported but declined 2% on a currency-neutral basis; wholesale growth partly offset weaker NIKE Direct sales. Gross margin rose slightly for the year, while a large, unusual tariff-recovery benefit lifted the fourth-quarter figure. Inventory also needs to be read as a dated balance, not as a direct measure of sales or demand.

What the latest results say

Nike’s fiscal year ends May 31. Its fiscal 2026 annual results cover the year ended May 31, 2026; its latest reported quarter here is Q1 fiscal 2027, ended August 31, 2026. Keeping those periods separate matters because the fourth-quarter margin included an unusual tariff-recovery item, while the first quarter provides a newer view of revenue and inventory.

Measure Fiscal 2026 or May 31, 2026 Q1 fiscal 2027 or August 31, 2026
NIKE, Inc. revenue $46.4 billion; flat as reported and down 2% currency-neutral $11.2 billion; down 4% as reported and 5% currency-neutral
Gross margin 42.9%, up 20 basis points for the year 42.8%, up 60 basis points year over year, primarily because of lower warehousing and logistics costs
Inventory $7.5 billion at May 31; flat year over year $7.8 billion at August 31; up 5% from May

Currency-neutral changes are non-GAAP measures Nike uses to separate operating performance from currency effects; they are not reported GAAP line items. Nike’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K provides the annual results, and its Q1 fiscal 2027 Form 10-Q reports the later quarter and inventory balance.

Why Nike’s revenue changes

Revenue depends on both the number of items sold and their average selling price. Product and channel mix, discounts, strategic pricing, geography, and currency can all shift the reported total. Nike’s filings describe demand factors such as sport popularity, design trends, consumer preferences, seasonal patterns, macroeconomic conditions, and operating or logistics constraints. Those factors explain possible mechanisms, not proof that a particular campaign or product caused a specific year’s result.

Product categories: footwear leads, but apparel moved differently

NIKE Brand footwear was the largest category in fiscal 2026, at $29.5 billion, or approximately 65% of NIKE Brand revenue. Footwear revenue was flat as reported and down 2% currency-neutral. Unit sales fell 1%, and a lower average selling price reduced revenue by about one percentage point; Nike identified channel mix as the main reason for the lower footwear average price, partly offset by product mix and strategic pricing.

Apparel generated $13.4 billion and grew 2% currency-neutral, while equipment generated $2.2 billion and declined 2% currency-neutral. Apparel units rose 1%, and average selling price added about one percentage point, mainly from product mix, partly offset by discounts and channel mix. The contrast shows why total revenue alone does not reveal whether a change came from volume, pricing, or the types of products sold.

Channels: wholesale growth offset Direct weakness

NIKE Brand wholesale revenue reached $27.5 billion in fiscal 2026, up 4% currency-neutral. NIKE Direct revenue was $17.7 billion, down 8% currency-neutral. Within Direct, digital sales declined 12%, primarily because of reduced traffic, and store sales fell 4%. The channel mix therefore mattered: weakness in Direct did not by itself explain total revenue, because wholesale provided an offset.

The Q1 fiscal 2027 figures show ongoing pressure but should not be confused with the full-year comparison. NIKE Direct revenue was $4.1 billion versus $4.5 billion a year earlier. Wholesale revenue was $6.8 billion in both periods as reported, but declined currency-neutral; Nike attributed the weakness to Greater China, partly offset by North America.

Geography and currency affect comparisons

NIKE Brand operations span North America, EMEA, Greater China, and Asia Pacific & Latin America (APLA); Converse is reported separately. NIKE Brand revenue was $45.2 billion in fiscal 2026, up 1% as reported but down 1% currency-neutral. Nike attributed the company-wide currency-neutral decline chiefly to Greater China, Converse, and EMEA, partly offset by North America. That is a description of this year’s results, not a conclusion that one region alone explains Nike’s performance.

Foreign-exchange translation and hedges can affect both reported revenue and margin. When comparing periods, distinguish reported changes from currency-neutral ones rather than treating them as interchangeable.

What affects Nike’s gross margin

Gross margin is the share of revenue left after the cost of goods sold, expressed as a percentage. For Nike, it can move with selling prices and discounts, product and channel mix, product costs, warehousing and logistics, foreign exchange, and results at individual brands.

Fiscal 2026: a small net improvement with offsetting drivers

Annual gross margin rose from 42.7% to 42.9%, a 20-basis-point increase. Nike’s approximate bridge assigned about 20 basis points of benefit each to lower warehousing and logistics costs, favorable net currency changes including hedges, and lower other costs. Lower Converse margin and higher NIKE Brand product costs each reduced margin by about 20 basis points. These rounded components need not add up exactly to the reported net change.

Q4 fiscal 2026: do not treat 49.2% as a normal run rate

Fourth-quarter gross margin reached 49.2%, up 890 basis points, but Nike said an expected $986 million IEEPA tariff recovery contributed approximately 900 basis points. The recovery is therefore essential context for any comparison: the headline quarter margin does not represent an ordinary recurring operating improvement. Nike also described sell-through as challenged in its June 30, 2026 results release.

Current actions can weigh on near-term results

In Q1 fiscal 2027, Nike said it was reducing supply of selected footwear to rebalance its portfolio, repositioning NIKE Brand Digital as a full-price platform while reinvesting in wholesale, and using markdowns and wholesale-partner returns or discounts to liquidate inventory and make room for new product. It also said it was investing in demand creation. Nike warned that these actions can weigh on revenue and profitability while they proceed.

How to interpret Nike’s inventory levels

Inventory is a balance-sheet snapshot at a particular date, not a measure of how much Nike sold during a period. At May 31, 2026, inventories were $7.5 billion, flat year over year: more units were offset by changes in product mix. At August 31, inventory was $7.8 billion, 5% above the May balance, primarily because of product-mix shifts.

A rise or fall in inventory dollars on its own does not establish whether demand is strengthening or weakening. Nike’s disclosures give some context on units and mix, but do not turn the one-quarter increase into a complete inventory-quality assessment or a forecast of future sales. Its stated actions—reducing selected footwear supply and using markdowns or partner returns to clear capacity—are relevant context for how it is managing stock.

A practical way to read future Nike results

  • Start with the period and basis: identify the fiscal year or quarter, and separate reported from currency-neutral growth.
  • Break revenue into drivers: compare footwear, apparel, and equipment; look for unit and average-price effects; then check Direct against wholesale.
  • Check geography and brand: distinguish North America, EMEA, Greater China, and APLA, and keep Converse separate where the filing does.
  • Read margin explanations, not just the rate: identify cost, mix, pricing, currency, or one-off items such as the expected Q4 tariff recovery.
  • Anchor inventory to its date: compare the same balance-sheet dates where possible and consider disclosed unit and product-mix explanations.

In the June 30, 2026 fiscal-year release, CEO Elliott Hill said Nike faced “top-line headwinds” while focusing on execution and profitability. CFO Matthew Friend said sell-through remained challenged. Those comments are management’s characterization of the operating environment, while the figures above show how revenue, margin, and inventory moved in the periods reported.
