Construction equipment prices depend on the machine’s exact configuration, age, features, dealer terms and broader cost conditions. Delivery estimates depend chiefly on whether the machine is available through a dealer or distribution center, or must wait for factory production, as well as demand and supply constraints. Because neither a universal price nor a guaranteed lead time follows from those factors alone, ask the selling dealer for a dated quote and delivery commitment tied to the exact machine and destination.
What determines the price in a construction equipment quote?
Machine, age and configuration
Model and configuration matter: features and attachments can change what a quoted machine includes. For used equipment, age, hours and condition also affect how comparable it is to another machine. Caterpillar’s buying guidance identifies configuration, age and features as pricing factors. A model name alone is not enough to establish that two quotes cover equivalent equipment.
Dealer terms and items outside the displayed price
A displayed price or MSRP may not be the amount you pay to have the machine ready at your site. Caterpillar’s buying-options terms say dealer pricing can exclude taxes, shipping, surcharges, assembly, destination, freight, delivery, unbundled attachments and protection plans. Which exclusions apply depends on the specific display and region; authorized dealers set actual sale terms. Request an itemized delivered total and confirm inclusions in writing.
Manufacturing costs and market conditions
Raw materials, components, labor, transportation, supply-chain disruptions and trade policy can pressure manufacturers’ costs. These factors can influence pricing and availability, but company filings do not translate them into a fixed surcharge for a particular machine. For example, Caterpillar’s 2026 first-quarter Form 10-Q forecast $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion in tariff costs for the company during 2026, based on tariffs implemented since the start of 2025 and in place over 2026. It also expected about $700 million of tariff costs in the second quarter, with about half in Construction Industries and the balance across other segments. These are dated company estimates, not per-machine charges or industry totals. Deere reported a $372 million direct impact from incremental import tariffs in the first six months of 2026, net of tariff recovery described in its 2026 second-quarter Form 10-Q; the figure excludes supplier and market-demand effects.

Manufacturer price realization also is not the same as a dealer’s list price or the change in one machine’s quote. Caterpillar’s reported results include volume and price-realization components affected by market, currency and commercial conditions. Those company-wide results cannot establish what a local dealer will charge for a specific configuration.
Total cost of ownership
The purchase price is only one part of the cost of using equipment. Account for upkeep, parts and service, expected uptime, financing or rental expense, and how long you expect to use the machine. Caterpillar advises buyers to consider total cost of ownership; CNH Industrial identifies performance, technology, dealer and service networks, after-sales support and price as competitive factors.

Why delivery estimates vary
Dealer stock, distribution inventory or factory order
A machine already available through a dealer or distribution center may arrive sooner than one awaiting factory production, but availability must be checked for the exact configuration. Caterpillar states: “Delivery times can vary based on availability of product from Caterpillar factories and product distribution centers.” A company-wide inventory figure does not tell you whether a named machine is locally available.
Dealer inventory and demand
Dealers make inventory decisions based on expected demand and anticipated delivery times, as well as seasonality, macroeconomic conditions and rental rates. Caterpillar reported that its machine dealer inventory decreased by about $500 million during 2025 and expected an increase in 2026 to offset that decrease. This describes Caterpillar’s dealer inventory, not stock across the whole market or at a particular dealership.

Production, configuration and destination
Strong demand, component shortages, transportation constraints and other supply-chain disruptions can affect production and availability. A specialized configuration or attachment may require additional sourcing or preparation. Destination and freight arrangements can also affect the date the machine reaches you. Manufacturer disclosures identify relevant business pressures, but do not provide a universal formula for turning them into a delivery date. Have the dealer state whether the machine is in stock, allocated or awaiting production, and put the estimated date and delivery terms on the quote.

Compare offers for equivalent equipment and terms, not just the headline price. Use this checklist:

- Exact configuration, included features, technology and attachments, including separate prices and lead times for anything not included.
- Delivered total to the same location, with freight, delivery, assembly, destination charges, taxes, surcharges, dealer preparation and protection items clearly identified.
- Stock status and delivery commitment, including the date the estimate assumes and the circumstances that could change it.
- Warranty, service and parts support, plus any financing or rental terms that change the cost over the expected period of use.
Questions to ask before committing
- Is this exact configuration physically in stock, allocated to me, or waiting for factory production?
- What date does the delivery estimate assume, and what could change it?
- Does the quote include freight, delivery, assembly, destination charges, attachments, protection plans, taxes and dealer preparation?
- What are the price and lead time for each requested attachment or optional feature?
- What warranty, parts availability, service, financing or rental terms apply?
- For a used machine, what are its model year, hours, maintenance history, condition and included equipment?
