Bitcoin’s price is set by supply and demand in trading markets, not by its supply schedule alone. The protocol makes new issuance relatively predictable and limits the eventual supply, but the price also depends on how much buyers want to hold, how many owners are willing to sell, market liquidity, and changing expectations. A halving can change the rate of new issuance; it cannot, by itself, establish a future price.
How Bitcoin’s price is formed
Bitcoin trades in markets where buyers and sellers meet. The price reflects the terms on which trades take place: demand from people seeking to buy, compared with the Bitcoin available for sale. A fund prospectus describes Bitcoin’s value as determined in part by its limited supply and demand in organized exchange markets (Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF prospectus).

This is a market outcome, not a formula that turns a known supply figure into a known price. New issuance is one part of supply, but existing holders can sell or retain their coins, and demand can change. SEC-filed fund disclosures list possible influences such as adoption, expectations, liquidity, miner sales, regulation, and confidence. They identify risks and mechanisms; they do not measure how much each factor moves the price or provide a predictive model.

What can move Bitcoin’s price?
Protocol issuance and the supply cap
Bitcoin’s protocol reduces the block reward through periodic halvings. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust 2026 annual report, covering 2025, says the reward fell to 3.125 BTC per block after the April 2024 halving. The report estimates that another halving will occur in mid-2028 and that the supply cap will be reached around 2140; the future dates are estimates, not guarantees. It reports approximately 19.9 million BTC outstanding as of December 2025 (BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust annual report).

These rules make the path of new issuance more predictable than future demand. They do not say what buyers will pay. Even with a capped supply, the market price can fall if demand weakens or more existing holders offer coins for sale than buyers want to take at prevailing prices.
Adoption, use, and investor demand
SEC-filed disclosures identify adoption and use, along with investment demand and expectations about future appreciation, as potential influences on Bitcoin’s market. Wider acceptance could affect willingness to buy or hold; skepticism or fading enthusiasm could affect it in the other direction. The filings do not establish that an adoption measure predicts a particular price or quantify the contribution of these factors (SEC-filed fund prospectus; Riot Platforms annual report).
Speculation can also amplify shifts in sentiment. If investors become more optimistic about future prices, they may be more willing to buy; if confidence changes, demand can retreat. These expectations are not the same as a guaranteed change in Bitcoin’s use or underlying value.

Liquidity, venues, and existing holders
Bitcoin trades across venues, and fragmented markets can affect how easily orders are matched. Fund disclosures also identify selling by miners and large holders as possible sources of price pressure and volatility. Those disclosures describe potential mechanisms, not proof that any particular seller caused a specific price move (SEC-filed fund prospectus; SEC-filed fund disclosure).
New issuance and tradable supply are different: coins already in circulation may be held rather than offered for sale, or may enter the market when their owners choose to sell. That makes the amount of Bitcoin available to buyers at a given time dependent on holder decisions as well as the protocol schedule.
Regulation, technology, and network confidence
Rules governing Bitcoin or the businesses that support it can change expectations and willingness to trade. Disclosures also name competing networks, protocol changes, security incidents, and confidence in the network as possible influences. These factors may alter perceived risks or the willingness to use and hold Bitcoin, but the cited filings do not supply a stable equation for translating them into a price (SEC-filed fund prospectus; Riot Platforms annual report; SEC-filed fund disclosure).

Political and economic conditions
Riot Platforms’ annual report lists political, economic, regulatory, and other conditions among factors that have affected Bitcoin’s market price. That is a disclosure of possible risks, not evidence of a fixed relationship between any one economic indicator and Bitcoin. Without separate empirical evidence, it is not sound to claim that a particular macroeconomic change will reliably push Bitcoin in one direction (Riot Platforms annual report).

A halving reduces the rate of new Bitcoin issuance. Its effect on price still depends on demand, the amount of existing Bitcoin holders sell, and market expectations. Historical price movements around halvings do not establish that the next one will produce a rise or offset the lower mining reward.

Why long-term Bitcoin price targets are uncertain
A long-range target depends on assumptions about future demand, adoption, liquidity, investor risk appetite, regulation, network development, and how much Bitcoin holders choose to sell. Those conditions can change together and interact with speculation. The protocol offers a more predictable issuance path than a demand forecast, but predictable issuance does not determine the market-clearing price.
Bitwise Bitcoin ETF’s annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025, cautions that Bitcoin’s history is too short for observers to assess some long-range predictions with precision. A forecast should therefore be read as a conditional scenario, with its assumptions and date—not as an inevitable outcome or a fact established by Bitcoin’s supply cap (Bitwise Bitcoin ETF annual report).

How to read historical prices and forecasts
Historical ranges show what happened in a specified period and market; they do not establish what will happen next. Riot Platforms’ 2026 annual report gives Bitcoin principal-market price ranges of approximately $58,900–$124,500 in fiscal 2025, $26,500–$73,800 in fiscal 2024, and $15,500–$31,900 in fiscal 2023. These company-reported historical ranges are tied to those fiscal periods, not current quotes or forecasts (Riot Platforms annual report).
