Dr Dan Plumley did not give a figure for Wrexham’s Championship budget. In a May 2024 interview, as the club moved into League One, he expected further investment but said reaching the Championship would require greater financial care. That was a time-bound prediction, not a forecast of Wrexham’s 2026–27 spending or a comment on today’s rules.
What Plumley said—and when
The Real EFL interviewed Plumley, a Principal Lecturer in Sport Finance at Sheffield Hallam University, after Wrexham’s promotion to League One in May 2024. He said, “Yes, I think it’s likely we’ll see big investment again from clubs like Wrexham”. On the Championship step, he said the 60% figure was recommended rather than enforced in League One, and that clubs would have to look at profit and sustainability regulations if they reached the Championship. The interview’s conclusion was that Wrexham could keep investing in League One but would need to be more careful in the second tier. Read the May 2024 interview.
Those comments predate Wrexham’s subsequent promotions and the current Championship Squad Cost Rules. They are not evidence that the club breached a rule, nor a prediction of a specific transfer or wage budget.
What happened after the prediction
Wrexham went on to win three successive promotions from non-league football to the Championship. BBC Sport reported in May 2026 that the club finished seventh in its first season in the second tier, narrowly missing the playoffs; its report also discussed plans for 2026–27. In a separate January 2026 report, BBC Sport said Wrexham paid about £30 million for players during a summer spending spree and noted commercial deals with United Airlines and HP. That is reported historical context about recruitment and commercial income—not Plumley’s forecast or a confirmed budget for a later season. BBC Sport’s January 2026 financial explainer.
Why the Championship changes the spending calculation
The EFL’s current Squad Cost Rules limit spending on player- and manager-related costs, including transfer fees, to 85% of a club’s income, according to Loughborough University’s September 2026 summary of the Leonard Curtis Football Finance Report. The report’s retrospective analysis found that 18 clubs would have exceeded the threshold in 2024/25, including 11 above 100%. Those are league-wide findings; they do not establish Wrexham’s own compliance position. Loughborough University’s September 2026 summary.

Income matters because the Championship is financially uneven. For 2015/16–2024/25, the report found clubs receiving parachute payments had average annual revenue of £59.7 million, compared with £21.3 million for clubs without them—2.8 times as much. Across that same period, parachute-payment clubs were more than four times as likely to win promotion: 31.4% versus 7%.
The league’s overall finances also grew: revenue rose from £546.5 million in 2015/16 to £920.3 million in 2024/25, while the combined wages-to-turnover ratio did not fall below 91% over the report’s ten-season span. These figures describe the competition as a whole, not Wrexham’s own accounts.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about Wrexham’s budget
The available reporting supports a cautious conclusion: Plumley expected Wrexham to keep investing as it stepped into League One, while warning that the Championship would require more care. Later reporting documents substantial player spending and commercial partnerships, but neither source supplies a current, precise Championship budget forecast from Plumley.
Transfer fees alone would not settle the question. A useful comparison would also need club income, parachute-payment status, wages and other costs covered by the rules, as well as the sporting outcome. The cited sources do not provide a current, like-for-like comparison of Wrexham’s total player costs with those of every Championship club.
