Palantir builds enterprise software for organizations that need to turn scattered data into coordinated action. Its platforms connect existing systems, apply controls, model real-world operations, and support human-led workflows, analytics, and AI.

Palantir is enterprise software for making large organizations’ operations more usable. Its platforms connect data from many existing systems, apply rules and permissions, model the real-world things an organization manages, and provide applications, workflows, analytics, and AI-assisted tools that people can use to make and carry out decisions.

That can mean a manufacturer managing parts and production constraints, a utility coordinating field operations, a hospital or public-health organization working from approved operational information, or a defense and intelligence team combining information for a mission. Palantir does not primarily sell a consumer app, a social network, or advertising based on consumer profiles. It sells software and implementation capability to governments and large commercial customers.

What Palantir does, in plain English

Most large institutions have valuable information scattered across databases, spreadsheets, sensors, documents, enterprise software, and specialist tools. Even when each system works on its own, people may struggle to answer operational questions quickly: Which orders are at risk? Which equipment needs attention? Which constraints will stop production? Who is authorized to act, and what action has already been taken?

Palantir’s proposition is to build a governed operational layer over those systems. Instead of asking every team to abandon its existing tools, the platform connects to them, organizes the information, and helps users work from a shared view of the organization.

A useful shorthand is: Palantir turns an institution’s fragmented data, rules, and real-world processes into operational software.

The workflow Palantir is designed to support

  1. Connect source information. Bring together approved data from enterprise applications, operational systems, sensors, documents, or other sources.
  2. Prepare and govern it. Clean and transform data, apply access permissions, and establish who can see or use particular information.
  3. Model the operation. Represent the relevant people, assets, parts, orders, locations, patients, missions, or other objects—and the relationships and rules around them.
  4. Build usable applications. Give analysts, engineers, operators, and leaders tools for analysis, planning, workflows, and approved actions.
  5. Operate and update the software. Run the system in the required environments, monitor it, and deliver updates even where connectivity or regulatory requirements are difficult.

This is why calling Palantir “a dashboard” misses much of the point. Dashboards report information. Palantir’s stated architecture is intended to connect information to logic, permissions, workflows, and actions.

The main Palantir products

Product or layer Core role What it means in practice
Foundry Data and operations foundation Ingests, manages, transforms, governs, and analyzes data; supports operational applications and workflows.
Ontology Operating model for the organization Connects data to real-world objects, relationships, rules, calculations, permissions, and approved actions.
AIP Generative-AI and automation layer Connects approved AI models to controlled organizational data and tools, with evaluation, observability, access controls, and possible human-review checkpoints.

Apollo Deployment and software-delivery system Runs and updates Palantir software across cloud, on-premises, disconnected, and air-gapped environments.

Foundry: the operational data foundation

Foundry is the platform most associated with commercial and civil operations. It helps organizations integrate their existing data, transform it into usable form, govern access, analyze it, and build applications around it.

Imagine a supply-chain team. Its order data, supplier information, inventory records, shipping status, factory schedules, and quality data may all sit in separate systems. Foundry can be used to connect those inputs and create applications that help the team investigate constraints, plan around them, and record or coordinate an approved response.

The important distinction is that Foundry is not simply a place to store data. It is meant to support a working operational process.

The Ontology: the layer that gives data operational meaning

Raw tables alone do not describe how an organization works. A table may contain part numbers or account IDs, but operators think in terms of parts, orders, customers, equipment, facilities, personnel, and the relationships among them.

Palantir calls its organizing layer the Ontology. It is designed to represent those real-world objects and connect them to the relevant data, business logic, calculations, permissions, and possible actions. An “order,” for example, can be linked to its supplier, inventory position, shipping status, production requirements, authorized users, and the workflows available to resolve a problem.

This is central to Palantir’s pitch: rather than leaving information in disconnected tables and reports, create a decision-oriented representation of the operation. Whether that representation is useful depends heavily on the customer’s data quality, design choices, operating rules, and governance.

AIP: Palantir’s AI layer, not its own foundation model

Palantir Artificial Intelligence Platform, or AIP, is the company’s generative-AI layer. It is designed to let customers use approved large language models and other AI models with controlled access to organizational context and software tools.

AIP is not best understood as “Palantir’s version of ChatGPT,” nor is Palantir principally a maker of proprietary frontier foundation models. Its differentiator is the surrounding operational environment: the data integrations, Ontology, permissions, tools, auditability, evaluation, and delivery system that can make an AI feature useful inside a complex institution.

For example, an AI assistant might help an authorized operator investigate an operational exception, summarize relevant records, propose next steps, or initiate a permitted workflow. In a well-designed deployment, the model is constrained by access controls and the organization’s rules rather than being given unrestricted access to everything.

That does not mean AI is automatically safe or correct. Model quality, prompt and tool design, permissions, human review, testing, logging, and the consequences of a mistake all remain the customer’s practical governance problem. Actual autonomy varies by configuration: some workflows may require explicit human approval, while others may be more automated within defined limits.

Gotham: the defense and intelligence product most people associate with Palantir

Gotham is Palantir’s platform most closely associated with defense, intelligence, and other high-stakes government work. In broad terms, it helps users integrate information and coordinate mission-oriented activity across allied defense and intelligence environments.

Gotham is not a consumer application, and it should not be treated as a single all-purpose surveillance product. What it can do in a particular deployment depends on the data connected to it, the customer’s legal authority, user permissions, configured workflows, and operating policies.

Apollo: why deployment matters

Apollo handles deployment and updates across varied computing environments. This matters because many enterprise and government customers cannot run every system in one public cloud. They may need on-premises installations, isolated networks, or disconnected and air-gapped environments.

For a typical consumer app, software delivery is mostly invisible. For a regulated manufacturer, utility, government agency, or defense user, securely operating and updating software across constrained environments can be a major part of the product’s value.

How the products fit together

Palantir’s products are designed to work as a system rather than as unrelated point products.

  • Foundry connects, prepares, and governs operational data.
  • The Ontology maps that information to the organization’s real-world operation, rules, and actions.
  • AIP uses that controlled context to power AI-assisted applications, agents, and automations.
  • Apollo deploys and updates the software where the customer needs it to run.
  • Gotham provides specialized capabilities for defense, intelligence, and related government missions.

In effect, Palantir is trying to solve a difficult enterprise problem: not merely “How do we analyze data?” but “How do we let authorized people and systems use reliable context to coordinate real operational work?”

Who uses Palantir?

Palantir sells to governments and commercial institutions. Its use cases span sectors where the data is complex, the operation has high consequences, and the organization needs more than a standalone analytics tool.

Examples of the kind of problem the platform can address include:

  • Identifying supply-chain bottlenecks and coordinating mitigations.
  • Managing factories, fleets, equipment, inventory, or maintenance operations.
  • Giving utilities a more integrated view of operational work.
  • Supporting approved healthcare or public-health operations.
  • Integrating information for defense, intelligence, and other government missions.

These are categories of use, not a claim that every customer uses the same data or has the same capabilities. The customer determines the source systems, permissions, workflows, and authorized actions. A Palantir deployment is therefore not a universal answer engine that produces a correct decision once a database is uploaded.

How Palantir makes money

Palantir is primarily an enterprise-software company. Customers pay to use its platforms under contracts that generally run from one to five years, with revenue generally recognized over the contract term. The company also works closely with customers on difficult implementations, which is why it is often described as both a software company and a hands-on implementation partner.

For scale, Palantir reported in its 2025 Form 10-K that it had 954 customers and $4.5 billion in annual revenue. That year’s revenue mix was 54% government and 46% commercial, and 74% of revenue came from U.S. customers.

  • (Please note you’ll need a copy of Horizon Zero Dawn: The Board Game to play this expansion.)

Its quarterly filing for the period ended March 31, 2026 reported 1,007 trailing-twelve-month customers and a 53% government / 47% commercial revenue mix for that quarter. These are dated snapshots, not fixed characteristics of the business; customer counts and revenue mix can change as contracts begin, end, expand, or renew.

What Palantir is not

It is not just a visualization tool

Reporting and visualization may be part of a deployment, but Palantir’s intended scope also includes data integration, access controls, operational modeling, workflows, and actions.

It is not simply an enterprise chatbot

AIP can use large language models, but the broader value proposition is connecting models to governed organizational context and tools. The foundation model is only one component of that system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not, by its own account, a data broker

Palantir says it is not a data broker or aggregator and that customers legally own their data. That is the company’s stated policy position. It should not be confused with a guarantee that sensitive-data deployments raise no privacy or civil-liberties questions; those questions depend on the customer, use case, legal authority, controls, and oversight.

It does not inherently make decisions without people

Palantir describes human operators, feedback, controlled actions, auditing, and review checkpoints. A deployment can include AI assistance or automation, but the degree of autonomy is set by the customer’s permissions, models, workflow design, and operating rules.

Why Palantir is controversial

The same characteristics that can make Palantir valuable—integrating sensitive information and helping institutions coordinate consequential action—also create high stakes. Its work with governments, defense, intelligence, and immigration-related operations receives particular scrutiny.

Human-rights and civil-liberties organizations, including Amnesty International, have raised concerns that particular immigration-enforcement and surveillance uses may contribute to rights violations. That is an external assessment of specific types of use and should not be turned into a blanket claim that every Palantir customer or deployment is unlawful or abusive.

The practical question is not only “What can the software do?” It is also:

  • Where is human review required?

  • What happens when the data is incomplete, biased, stale, or wrong?

Those governance questions matter for private companies, but they are especially consequential when a system is used in policing, immigration, health, defense, intelligence, or any setting where an error can affect rights, safety, or liberty.

What this means for someone evaluating the company

For readers trying to understand Palantir as a business, the key is to see it as infrastructure for complex, data-heavy operations. Its appeal is strongest where a customer has fragmented systems, demanding security or deployment requirements, and a real need to coordinate decisions and actions across teams.

Its commercial opportunity is not limited to AI hype: data integration, operational software, and controlled deployment are foundational parts of the offering. At the same time, AI features may increase interest in the platform because they can be tied to the customer’s own governed operational context.

The trade-off is that these implementations are difficult. Value depends on integration quality, customer adoption, data governance, security, configuration, and whether the resulting workflows improve the organization’s real operation. Government work can provide large opportunities but can also bring procurement complexity, public scrutiny, contract concentration, and policy risk. None of this is a recommendation to buy or sell Palantir stock.

A final, accurate one-sentence description

Palantir builds enterprise software that helps governments and large organizations connect fragmented data to real-world operations, then use governed applications, workflows, analytics, and AI to support authorized decisions and actions.

For independent background reading rather than product documentation, the book Palantir: Zero to Monopoly is listed by its publisher as available through Amazon; it should be treated as supplementary independent reading, not as official Palantir material or an endorsement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Palantir a data company or a software company?

No. Palantir is an enterprise-software company. It sells platforms and implementation capability to governments and commercial institutions, generally through multi-year contracts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Palantir make its own AI model?

AIP is Palantir’s layer for using approved large language models and other AI with controlled organizational data and tools. Palantir is not principally a foundation-model maker; its focus is the operational context, permissions, integrations, and governance around AI use.

Does Palantir own its customers’ data?

Not necessarily. Palantir says customers legally own their data and that it is not a data broker or aggregator. In practice, what Palantir can access and process depends on the customer contract, systems connected, permissions, and applicable law.

Does Palantir make decisions automatically?

No single answer applies. The platform can support analysis, AI assistance, workflows, and controlled automation, but actual decision authority and autonomy depend on the customer’s configured permissions, models, review steps, and operating rules.

The Bottom Line

Palantir is best understood as operational enterprise software: it connects an institution’s data, rules, people, and processes so authorized users can understand and act on complex situations. Its power—and the scrutiny around it—comes from the consequences of the customer use cases and the quality of their governance.
