MDA Space is a Canadian space-technology company that designs satellite systems, Earth-observation and geointelligence capabilities, space robotics, and mission-operations services. What MDA Space does in practical terms
MDA Space supplies the hardware, software, engineering, integration, data capabilities, and continuing operations needed to make complex space missions work. A customer may hire it to provide a satellite platform for a communications constellation, build equipment that observes Earth, develop a robotic arm for an orbital or lunar facility, or operate robotic systems after launch.
That makes MDA Space a mission supplier and service provider rather than a consumer space company. It can be responsible for a subsystem, an entire spacecraft architecture, data-processing capability, or operational support while another organization owns the network, sets the mission objectives, and sells the end service. A reference to MDA’s work on a customer constellation therefore does not mean MDA owns or operates that constellation.

Company history and scale
MDA Space describes itself as having more than 55 years of history and more than 450 missions. Those are company overview figures accessed October 13, 2026; they are MDA Space’s own summary measures, not an independently audited count of mission success. They nevertheless indicate the breadth of programs behind the current three-business structure.
The three business areas
Satellite Systems
Satellite Systems builds spacecraft systems and related technologies for communications and other orbital missions. The work can include satellite design, payload and platform integration, production, testing, and the interfaces needed to connect a spacecraft with a customer’s ground and network infrastructure.
Two programs named in MDA Space’s FY2025 reporting illustrate the business. MDA is supplying systems for Telesat Lightspeed and for Globalstar’s next-generation low-Earth-orbit (LEO) constellation. In both cases, the customer is developing the network and mission; MDA’s role is to provide contracted satellite systems and associated engineering. Those examples should not be read as evidence that MDA owns either network.
Geointelligence
Geointelligence turns observations of Earth into information that a government, business, or other mission customer can use. The activity can involve Earth-observation spacecraft, sensors, data processing, analytics, and delivery systems. The point is not simply taking pictures: useful geointelligence depends on collecting observations in the right orbit, calibrating instruments, processing data, and presenting results in a form suited to a customer’s decision or workflow.
MDA CHORUS is described in company reporting as an Earth-observation constellation program. It belongs in this geointelligence context. The available description supports saying that CHORUS is intended to support observation of Earth; it does not support portraying MDA as a consumer mapping application or claiming that every resulting data product is freely available to the public.

Robotics & Space Operations
This business applies robotic systems and operational expertise to human-spaceflight, exploration, servicing, and in-space construction missions. MDA’s heritage includes Canadarm technology used in human spaceflight. Its MDA SKYMAKER line is described as deriving from that heritage and supporting lunar rovers and landers, space stations, satellite servicing, and in-space assembly and manufacturing.
The offering is therefore a portfolio of mission-oriented robotics and services. Depending on the contract, MDA may design and build a robotic system, integrate it with a spacecraft or station, provide control and simulation software, train operators, or keep the equipment functioning during a mission.

What MDA Space supplies in a satellite mission
A satellite customer generally needs more than a spacecraft bus. The supplier must translate mission requirements into an architecture, select and integrate payloads, qualify hardware for launch and orbit, and provide interfaces to ground systems. MDA’s Satellite Systems work sits across that chain.
From requirements to a flight-ready system
- Mission definition: The customer establishes coverage, capacity, latency, imaging, scientific, or other objectives. Those requirements drive orbit, spacecraft size, payload design, and the number of satellites.
- System architecture: MDA and the customer allocate functions among spacecraft, payloads, ground stations, communications links, and control software. A constellation requires repeatable designs and production planning rather than a one-off prototype.
- Engineering and integration: Components and payloads are assembled into a spacecraft system, with electrical, mechanical, thermal, software, and communications interfaces tested together.
- Qualification and acceptance: Hardware is exposed to vibration, thermal-vacuum, electromagnetic, and other mission-specific tests before launch. The precise test program depends on the contract and mission.
- Launch and operations handover: After deployment, control teams commission satellites, verify performance, and transition into routine network operations. The customer or its designated operator may perform those activities even when MDA supplied the spacecraft.
This lifecycle explains why a supplier can report substantial revenue before a constellation is fully deployed: design, manufacturing, integration, and milestone acceptance are billable work that precedes the customer’s long-term service launch.
Canadarm heritage, Canadarm3, and space operations
What Canadarm-derived robotics are for
Robotic arms in space move equipment, capture or berth vehicles, position payloads, inspect structures, and support construction or maintenance where sending a person would be difficult or risky. The same underlying capabilities—precision control, force sensing, fault management, operator interfaces, and reliable joints—can be adapted to stations, lunar vehicles, servicing spacecraft, and assembly platforms.

MDA SKYMAKER packages that heritage for different mission environments. A lunar application may need to manipulate tools or samples near the surface; a servicing mission may need to approach and capture a satellite; an in-space manufacturing system may need repeatable positioning over long periods. These are engineering and operations engagements, not standardized accessories with a retail specification sheet.

MDA is developing Canadarm3 for the Lunar Gateway effort. MDA Space’s FY2025 filing describes design and construction work, including system assembly, integration, and testing. Canadarm3 is consequently a system under development, not a robotic arm already deployed at the Gateway.
Development status matters when interpreting announcements or financial results. Engineering, test articles, and qualification work can generate revenue while a mission is still years from launch, and schedules can change as the broader Gateway program evolves. A statement that MDA is working on Canadarm3 should not be converted into a claim that the complete system is operating in lunar orbit.
International Space Station operations contract
MDA Space also reported a C$250 million contract extension from the Canadian Space Agency for ISS robotics operations from 2025 through 2030. This is an operations and services role supporting existing station robotics. It is distinct from building a new space station and from the separate development of Canadarm3.
How geointelligence becomes useful information
Earth observation starts with an instrument and an orbit, but customers usually pay for a dependable information flow. A typical chain includes tasking or scheduling observations, acquiring raw data, calibrating and correcting it, storing and distributing the results, and applying analytics that identify change or patterns.

Why a constellation can matter
One satellite provides observations only when its orbit and visibility allow. Multiple satellites can improve revisit frequency, geographic coverage, resilience, or the ability to collect data under different viewing conditions. The right trade-off depends on the customer’s mission: emergency response values timely revisits, while another user may prioritize resolution, spectral information, or long-term consistency.
MDA CHORUS is identified as an Earth-observation constellation program, so its significance is best explained in those mission terms. The available company description does not establish a consumer subscription, a particular public price, or universal access to CHORUS data. Those details should be checked against the current program terms before being asserted.

The following figures are MDA Space’s reported segment results for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025. The results announcement carrying them was published March 4, 2026. They describe revenue recognized by MDA Space, not the total value of the customer constellations or government programs.

The 85.5% Satellite Systems increase is unusually large in percentage terms because contract work moved to a higher volume. It does not mean MDA Space’s entire business grew by 85.5%, nor does it measure the eventual sales generated by Telesat or Globalstar. Similarly, the 10.5% Robotics & Space Operations increase is a segment result tied primarily to Canadarm3 work, not a claim that every robotics activity expanded at that rate.

Who pays MDA Space and what customers receive
Customers can include national space agencies, government departments, telecommunications or satellite-network companies, and commercial mission developers. Their contracts may be fixed-price, milestone-based, cost-plus, or structured around recurring operations; the exact commercial terms vary and are not established by the figures above.

Customer outcomes differ by business line:
- Satellite-network customer: receives spacecraft systems that can be deployed as part of a communications or other LEO constellation.
- Earth-observation customer: receives access to observations, processing, analytics, or an integrated system for monitoring the planet.
- Exploration or station customer: receives robotic hardware, control systems, integration, training, and mission operations.
Because the company works on long programs, revenue timing can be lumpy. A design award, production ramp, acceptance milestone, launch delay, or change in customer scope can shift when work is recognized. Keep the date attached to every financial number
Use the wording FY2025, year ended December 31, 2025, whenever citing the segment revenue figures. A result published in March 2026 is still a report about the prior fiscal year. It should not be silently presented as current-quarter revenue.

A program can move through design, manufacturing, integration, testing, launch, commissioning, and routine operations. MDA’s role and the associated revenue opportunity can change at each stage. Canadarm3 illustrates why the distinction matters: the cited filing describes development work, while the ISS extension describes ongoing operations.
Check program status before publication
Space-program schedules, contract scopes, and commercialization plans can change. For an article published materially later than October 13, 2026, verify current official program pages and the latest annual filing before updating status language or financial figures.
Why MDA Space matters to a personal-finance reader
Understanding the business model helps explain why a space company can have large revenue swings without selling a consumer product. A handful of government and commercial contracts can dominate a segment, and the work may be recognized over several years as engineering and production milestones are completed.
It also clarifies what a headline means. A contract win may expand future workload but does not by itself equal immediate profit or cash. A higher segment revenue number may reflect a production ramp rather than a permanent change in demand.
