That date is the point where the policy’s stated term ends. Whether you receive money at that point depends on the type of policy you hold. Some policies pay a maturity or survival benefit, some simply stop covering you, and some continue in a different form. The policy schedule and the insurer’s records settle the details for your policy.
What a maturity date means in your contract
Maturity is defined by the contract, not by general insurance practice. HM Revenue & Customs, in its published manual for UK tax guidance, puts it this way: “An endowment policy has a maturity date specified in the terms of the policy.” The same logic applies to any life policy with a fixed end date. The maturity date is usually printed on the policy schedule or declarations page, and it is the reference point for every decision that follows.
Maturity is not the same as a death claim. A death claim is paid when the insured dies during coverage. A maturity event happens when the insured is still alive at the end of a stated period, and only certain policy designs pay anything at that moment.
What happens at maturity, by policy type
The table below compares the three common designs. The differences matter more than the label on the policy, so check which column matches yours.

| Policy type | Benefit when the maturity date arrives | Does coverage continue? | What to check on the schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endowment or other maturity-benefit policy | A maturity benefit may be payable if the insured survives to the stated date. The amount and any bonus depend on the contract and insurer. | Generally ends once the benefit is paid, unless the contract provides a continuation or conversion option. | Maturity date, guaranteed sum, bonus provisions, and any options to take the proceeds another way. |
| Term life | Not stated as a survival payment in general. A standard term policy pays a death benefit only if the insured dies during the term. | Coverage ends at the end of the term unless it is renewed or converted. | Return-of-premium feature, renewal terms, and conversion rights. |
| Whole life | The death benefit is paid after death. Cash value may be borrowed against during life. Whether a maturity or endowment-age payment exists depends on the specific contract. | Coverage is designed to last for the insured’s life, so there is usually no ordinary term end. | Any endowment-age or maturity provision, cash value terms, and loan rules. |
Endowment and other maturity-benefit policies
These are the policies most directly associated with the word “maturity.” If the insured survives to the end of the stated period, the insurer pays the maturity benefit. Florida’s Department of Financial Services describes an endowment whole-life policy in consumer guidance this way: “The policy ‘endows’ if the insured lives to the end of the period.” That description applies to that policy type. It is not a rule that every life policy pays out at its end.
India’s Life Insurance Corporation makes the same point from the claims side in its guidance: “In case of Endowment type of Policies, amount is payable at the end of the policy period.” Both statements confirm that the payment is tied to survival to a set date, which is what separates an endowment from ordinary term protection.

Term life insurance
A term policy covers a fixed number of years. If the insured dies during that window, the death benefit is paid. If the insured is alive when the term ends, a standard term policy typically pays nothing and coverage simply lapses. That is the most common surprise for term buyers. Some term contracts include a return-of-premium feature, which refunds part or all of the premiums if the insured outlives the term, but that feature is a contract choice and costs more. Other term contracts offer renewal (usually at a higher premium based on age) or conversion to a permanent policy without a new medical exam, typically within a set deadline. Read the policy for these terms before the term ends, because a conversion window can close.
Whole life insurance
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners describes whole life as coverage for the insured’s entire life, with the death benefit paid after death and a cash value that may be borrowed against. Because whole life is designed to continue, most whole-life policies do not have an ordinary term end that triggers a cash payment. Some contracts do include an endowment age, a stated age at which the policy pays its face amount and then ends. Do not assume a whole-life policy pays cash at a certain age unless the schedule or contract says so.

Do you get money when a policy matures?
Only if your policy pays a maturity benefit. For an endowment or a whole-life contract with an endowment provision, a payment is expected at the stated date, but the exact figure is set by the contract. No universal payout figure applies, and any published average return would not tell you what your own policy will pay.
For with-profits policies in the UK, HMRC explains that the policy can include a guaranteed sum assured plus bonuses. A terminal bonus may also be declared at maturity or on surrender, and the insurer decides whether to declare it. In other words, part of the amount may be guaranteed and part may be discretionary. Ask the insurer to separate the guaranteed amount from any non-guaranteed bonus in writing.

What to do before the maturity date
- Locate the maturity date and benefit terms. Open the policy schedule or contract and note the maturity date, the benefit amount, any guarantees, bonus provisions, exclusions, and any option to continue, renew, convert, or use the proceeds to buy another product.
- Contact the insurer several weeks ahead. Ask for the amount payable, whether premiums or coverage stop on the maturity date, and the process and deadline for submitting documents. Get the answers in writing where possible.
- Ask which documents and bank details are needed. LIC of India states that it sends notice before an endowment maturity date and asks policyholders to submit specified claim, policy, bank, and Know Your Customer (KYC) documents so the payment can be processed. Other insurers and countries use different forms and timelines, so use your insurer’s list rather than a generic one.
- Request tax paperwork. Ask the insurer for any tax certificate or reporting documents that apply in your jurisdiction, then keep them with your tax records.
Is a maturity payout taxed?
It depends on where you live and on the policy. Tax treatment varies by country and by the type of policy and benefit. Do not apply one country’s rules to another.
In the UK, HMRC’s guidance for 2026 says that the policy type and the benefit received determine whether income tax is due on a maturity gain. A gain should be reported on the insurer’s chargeable-event certificate. If you are outside the UK, ask your tax authority or a qualified adviser in your country how a maturity payment is treated.

If the insurer has not contacted you
Insurers do not always send a reminder before a maturity date, so the policy document is your reference point. Check the schedule for the date, then contact the insurer directly using the details printed on your policy or on the insurer’s official website. Do not rely on a third party to tell you what your policy pays. If the answer is unclear or the insurer disputes the amount, ask for the reasoning in writing and keep copies of all correspondence. A licensed insurance adviser who is independent of the insurer can help you review the contract, but verify that the adviser is licensed in your jurisdiction and that the advice fits your situation before you act on it.
