What Does “Goop” Mean? How Gwyneth Paltrow’s Newsletter Became a Business

Goop is named for Gwyneth Paltrow’s initials, but the business has grown far beyond its original newsletter. Here’s what it includes and what its recent company-reported growth says.

“Goop” comes from Gwyneth Paltrow’s initials, G.P. In a 2009 interview, she said she wanted a word that “means nothing and could mean anything.” The name now belongs to a business spanning editorial, beauty, fashion, curated retail and food—not just the weekly newsletter Paltrow started in 2008.

What does “Goop” mean?

Paltrow described the name as a nickname tied to her initials: “It is a nickname, like my name is G.P., so that is really where it came from. And I wanted it to be a word that means nothing and could mean anything.” That explanation comes from a 2009 USA Today interview. It is her account of the name’s origin; it does not establish a separate linguistic meaning.

How did Goop begin?

Paltrow started Goop in 2008 as a way to share things she liked with friends. The company says it began as a weekly email newsletter and developed into a broader editorial and commerce operation. Its official description now covers beauty, wellness, style, culture, travel and home.

What does Goop do today?

Goop combines media, products and services. Its official pages describe several distinct parts of the business:

  • Editorial and media: Articles covering lifestyle topics and a weekly podcast.
  • Owned products: Goop Beauty sells skincare, makeup, bath and body, and hair products. Its current product page includes Cloudberry Exfoliating Jelly Cleanser, Youth-Boost Peptide Serum and 15% Glycolic Acid Overnight Glow Peel; product names and availability may change. Goop points customers to its Amazon storefront and Ulta Beauty. See Goop Beauty’s official overview.
  • Fashion and retail: G. Label is Goop’s apparel line. The company also describes permanent stores where customers can try on apparel and test beauty products.
  • Curated commerce: Goop’s digital shop offers its own goods alongside selected products across lifestyle categories.
  • Food: Goop Kitchen is described as a pickup-and-delivery-only business.

These descriptions appear in Goop’s catalog and its company overview. The portfolio has evolved: a 2022 company timeline, for example, recounted earlier milestones such as a clean beauty line, G. Label, a podcast and Netflix collaborations. That timeline is historical context, not a complete account of the current business.

Is Goop’s business booming?

There is a recent growth claim, but it should be read as company-reported performance rather than independently verified financial reporting. In a 2025 profile, Vanity Fair relayed a Goop representative’s statement that overall revenue rose 10% in 2024 compared with 2023. The representative also reported year-over-year growth of 34% for Goop Beauty, 42% for G. Label and 60% for Goop Kitchen.

Business area Reported 2024 year-over-year growth Attribution
Goop overall Revenue up 10% Goop representative, reported by Vanity Fair in 2025
Goop Beauty Revenue up 34% Goop representative, reported by Vanity Fair in 2025
G. Label Revenue up 42% Goop representative, reported by Vanity Fair in 2025
Goop Kitchen Up 60% year over year Goop representative, reported by Vanity Fair in 2025

The figures and their attribution are in Vanity Fair’s 2025 report. The publication said Goop did not disclose whether it was profitable. Revenue growth alone does not show profit: it does not account for the company’s costs, margins or other financial details.

Paltrow, identified in the report as Goop’s CEO, described the company this way: “My business is a good business and it’s a strong business and the brand is strong.” A Goop representative separately called 2024 “Goop’s best year yet from an overall revenue perspective.” Both are attributed statements, not audited conclusions.
