What Does “COPO” Mean on a Camaro—and What Are They Worth Today?

COPO means Central Office Production Order, Chevrolet’s special-order system. Learn how 1969 ZL1 and L72 cars differ, why modern COPOs are drag racers, and how to interpret dated sale figures.

COPO stands for Central Office Production Order, Chevrolet’s special-order system—not an engine name. The term most often refers to 1969 Camaros ordered with big-block 427 engines, including the rare all-aluminum ZL1. It can also refer to later, purpose-built COPO Camaros for drag racing. Their values differ substantially, so any price needs to be tied to the specific car, its documentation and condition, and a dated sale or valuation source.

What does COPO mean?

Chevrolet used the Central Office Production Order system, normally for fleet orders, to handle vehicle configurations that were not ordinarily available through standard options. Dealers found they could use the process to order special engine packages for cars such as the Camaro. COPO describes how the car was ordered; it is not an engine designation. Chevrolet’s COPO history explains the system and its use.

The ordering process also helps explain why these cars were not widely recognized when new. Chevrolet historian Dan Hodgdon quoted Bill Martens, then recently retired as Chevrolet Performance’s Associate Marketing Manager, saying: “In ’69, you have to appreciate that our communication was much more limited; the population did not know about COPO cars until after the fact.” Chevrolet’s account published that comment in 2023.

Which 1969 Camaros were COPOs?

COPO Camaros included more than one 427 configuration. The ZL1 and L72 are related as COPO big-block cars, but they are not interchangeable descriptions.

COPO 9560 with the ZL1 427

The best-known version is the COPO 9560, equipped with an all-aluminum 427-cubic-inch ZL1 engine. Chevrolet says 69 such Camaros were assembled for the 1969 model year. Chevrolet’s history identifies the production figure.

COPO cars with the iron-block L72 427

Other COPO Camaros used the iron-block 427 L72. They are COPOs, but they are not ZL1s. Chevrolet’s account of one L72 example reports 193 factory automatic COPOs; that figure refers to automatic-transmission cars and should not be confused with the 69 ZL1 Camaros. Chevrolet’s history describes the example and figure.

How are modern COPO Camaros different?

Chevrolet revived the COPO name for purpose-built drag-racing cars, with deliveries beginning in 2012—43 years after the original 1969 orders. The modern cars used different engine combinations over the life of the program. Chevrolet said in its March 11, 2024 history that the program had reached its finish line, while support and parts for existing cars would continue. Chevrolet’s program history describes that status.

A 2021 announcement for the 2022 COPO Camaro said that model was sold as a Chevrolet Performance part and could not be registered for street use. That is a specification of the 2022 model, not a current offer or a statement about every car carrying the COPO name. Chevrolet’s 2022 announcement gives the dated details.

Modern-program interest figures also need careful wording. Chevrolet reported that Russ O’Blenes, Director of GM’s Performance and Racing Propulsion Team, said more than 3,000 people had expressed interest in buying one when Chevrolet invited people to sign up as “hand-raisers.” That is reported prospective-buyer interest, not a production total or completed sales count. Chevrolet’s 2024 history quotes O’Blenes.

What are 1969 COPO Camaros worth today?

There is no single reliable value for every COPO Camaro. Hagerty’s live valuation page showed an $89,000 average sale price and reported a $77,700 sale on September 25, 2026, attributed to Bring a Trailer, when the page was accessed on October 5, 2026. These are a valuation-page snapshot and an individual recorded sale, not an appraisal of a particular car. Hagerty’s 1969 COPO valuation page may change over time.

Two Mecum results illustrate how different individual sales can be, but they are historical examples rather than current comparable sales by themselves:

Sale Reported result What it represents
Mecum Kissimmee, January 13, 2018 $214,500 One 1969 COPO Camaro. Mecum listing.
Mecum Phoenix, March 16, 2019 $132,000 A different 1969 COPO Camaro. Mecum listing.

The results differ because they concern different cars sold at different venues and dates; their listing details are not identical. A prior sale can provide context, but it does not establish what another car is worth now.

What affects a specific car’s value?

Before using any price as a comparison, identify the exact car and examine evidence that bears on its identity, history, and condition. The available listings and valuation material do not establish a fixed dollar adjustment for any one factor.

  • COPO identity and configuration: Verify the car’s COPO status and whether it is an L72 or ZL1 through the car’s own documentation. Do not infer ZL1 identity merely from the COPO label.
  • Provenance and ownership history: Consider documented ownership and any gaps in the car’s history.
  • Originality and restoration: Compare the amount and quality of restoration work and what remains original.
  • Condition and use: Mileage, maintenance, wear, damage, and title issues can affect value, as Hagerty notes.
  • Included equipment: Compare transmissions and other equipment with the specific auction car or valuation example.
  • Sale context: Use completed sales for the same or a closely comparable configuration, and note the sale date and venue. Treat asking prices as offers, not completed-sale evidence.

For a transaction, insurance decision, or estate valuation, a guide average is only a starting point. A vehicle-specific appraisal requires authentication and inspection.
