A full out-of-warranty Tesla high-voltage battery replacement in the United States usually costs $10,000–$20,000 or more. Model 3 replacements are commonly reported at about $10,000–$16,000, while older Model S replacements can reach $20,000–$22,000 or more. These are market estimates, not a Tesla price list; the exact cost depends on the vehicle, fault and repair scope.
A battery warning does not necessarily mean the entire pack needs replacement, and warranty coverage may reduce the cost of a qualifying repair to $0. Check the vehicle-specific estimate and warranty in the Tesla app before budgeting for a major repair.
Typical Tesla battery replacement costs
The large battery beneath a Tesla is the high-voltage traction battery. It is separate from the smaller low-voltage battery, which is a much less expensive repair. The following figures are planning estimates, not guaranteed quotes.
| Model | Practical U.S. estimate | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Model 3 | About $10,000–$16,000 | AAA lists $10,000–$15,000 including parts and labor. A documented remanufactured 75-kWh replacement totaled $15,799.27, including $13,500 for the battery and $2,299.27 for labor. Recurrent cites a 2023 owner report of about $13,000 including labor. |
| Model Y | No reliable universal current figure | Battery designs and configurations vary, including structural and non-structural packs. Costs are generally expected to be comparable to similarly configured Model 3 packs, but public invoices are inconsistent. |
| Model S | About $13,000–$20,000+ | AAA lists $13,000–$20,000 or more. Historical reports include costs around $20,000 and quotes around $22,000 for older vehicles. |
| Model X | No reliable universal current figure | Pack size, configuration, availability and labor vary substantially; the cost may be comparable to or higher than Model S. |
| Cybertruck | No verified public out-of-warranty range | There is not enough reliable public replacement-invoice data to state a defensible price. |

Why the price varies
A replacement quote is not simply the price of the cells. The final bill may include:
- Replacement pack cost and battery capacity.
- Whether the pack is new, reconditioned, remanufactured or refurbished.
- High-voltage removal and installation labor.
- Diagnostic charges and software configuration.
- Shipping or core charges for the old pack.
- Taxes, shop fees and required seals, fasteners or related parts.
- Additional damage from a collision, flooding or underbody impact.
Availability also matters. A battery for an older Tesla may be harder to source than one for a current, high-volume model. A lower advertised price may exclude installation, shipping or the replacement pack’s warranty.
How to get your Tesla’s actual estimate
Tesla does not publish one universal replacement price. Its estimate is specific to the vehicle, battery configuration and diagnosed fault. According to Tesla’s service estimate instructions, request an estimate in the app:
- Open the Tesla app.
- Tap Service.
- Tap View estimate.
Tesla may perform remote diagnostics before preparing the appointment. Warranty repairs normally appear as $0, although an initial estimate may show a charge until an inspection confirms coverage. Tesla says it will not perform service without approval of updated costs.

Check the warranty before assuming you owe $15,000
A covered battery or drive-unit failure can reduce the owner’s cost to $0, subject to the warranty’s exclusions. Tesla’s North American warranty effective June 5, 2025 lists this battery and drive-unit coverage:
| Vehicle and configuration | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Model S and Model X | 8 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, with at least 70% battery-capacity retention |
| Model 3 and Model Y Standard or Standard Range Plus | 8 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, with at least 70% retention |
| Model 3 and Model Y Long Range or Performance | 8 years or 120,000 miles, whichever comes first, with at least 70% retention |
Check the exact coverage for your vehicle in the Tesla app. Tesla’s warranty instructions give this path:
- Scroll to the bottom of the Tesla app home screen.
- Select Specs & Warranty.
- Tap the Warranty tab.
The warranty does not cover every battery-related problem. Tesla excludes, among other things, collision damage, flooding, intentional damage or abuse, ignoring active warnings, and certain work performed by non-Tesla or non-certified personnel. Unauthorized modifications or parts can also affect coverage.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The 70% battery guarantee does not mean automatic replacement
The 70% figure is often misunderstood. A lower range number on the dashboard is not, by itself, proof that the battery has fallen below the warranty threshold. Tesla says displayed range is an imperfect measure of capacity because it can be affected by temperature, state of charge, calibration, software changes, driving conditions, HVAC use, tires and accessory consumption.
Tesla determines the measurement method and decides whether the remedy is a repair, replacement or reconditioned or remanufactured battery. Seeing fewer miles at a full charge does not automatically qualify the vehicle for a free pack.

A battery warning may not require a complete pack
Some high-voltage battery faults can be repaired without replacing the entire pack. Tesla service documentation includes procedures for contactors, fuses, high-voltage controllers, shunts, busbars, pyrotechnic battery disconnects, power-conversion components, enclosures and seals. The Model Y service manual, for example, includes both complete battery replacement and component-level procedures.
That distinction can change the financial decision dramatically. A failed contactor, controller or fuse may produce a serious warning while costing substantially less than a complete pack. Do not authorize a full replacement based only on a dashboard message or preliminary diagnosis.
Do not confuse the traction battery with the low-voltage battery
Teslas have a large high-voltage traction battery and a separate low-voltage battery. Replacing the low-voltage unit is normally a hundreds-of-dollars service, not a $10,000-plus repair. Older vehicles may use a lead-acid battery, while some Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles use a lithium-ion low-voltage battery.
If the car will not start or displays electrical warnings, confirm which battery the technician is discussing. Tesla’s low-voltage battery technical note describes lithium-ion replacements for certain models.
Can a refurbished or third-party battery lower the bill?
Yes. A reputable third-party supplier may offer a refurbished OEM or remanufactured pack for less than Tesla service-center pricing. Recurrent reports:

What to budget for a Tesla battery problem
| Situation | Reasonable planning figure |
|---|---|
| Covered failure | $0, subject to warranty or service-agreement terms |
| Low-voltage battery or repairable high-voltage component | Hundreds to several thousand dollars, depending on the failed part and labor |
| Many Model 3 full-pack replacements | $10,000–$16,000 |
| Many older Model S full-pack replacements | $13,000–$20,000+ |
| Difficult, older, high-capacity or low-availability repair | $20,000 or more |
| Third-party refurbished pack | Potentially less than Tesla’s quote, but installation and warranty terms vary |
For a used Tesla purchase, treat battery warranty expiration as part of the vehicle’s financial profile. A lower purchase price may not compensate for the risk of a major out-of-warranty repair. Keep a separate emergency reserve rather than assuming the dashboard range or a general internet estimate tells you the battery’s remaining value.
Common claims that need qualification
- “Every Tesla battery replacement costs $20,000.” Not true. Model 3 estimates are often lower, while some older Model S repairs exceed that amount.
- “Tesla batteries have eight years of unlimited-mile coverage.” Current coverage has mileage limits of 100,000, 120,000 or 150,000 miles depending on model and configuration.
- “A warranty replacement must be brand new.” Tesla may use a new, reconditioned or remanufactured unit.
- “A range figure below 70% guarantees replacement.” Tesla does not treat displayed range as a definitive capacity measurement.
- “Any battery warning means the pack is ruined.” Some faults involve individual high-voltage components rather than the complete pack.
- “Any third-party battery repair voids the entire Tesla warranty.” That is too broad. Tesla can exclude damage caused by unauthorized servicing, but that does not necessarily eliminate coverage for every unrelated vehicle component.
FAQ
How much does it cost to replace a Tesla battery out of warranty?
A full high-voltage replacement generally costs about $10,000–$20,000 or more in the United States. Model 3 estimates commonly fall around $10,000–$16,000, while older Model S replacements can exceed $20,000.
Will Tesla replace my battery for free if it drops below 70%?
Not automatically. Tesla uses its own diagnostic method, and the range displayed on the car is not a definitive battery-capacity test. Coverage also depends on the vehicle’s age, mileage, configuration and the cause of the problem.
Is it cheaper to replace a Tesla battery through a third party?
It can be. Refurbished or remanufactured packs may cost less than Tesla’s quote, but installation, shipping, diagnostics, compatibility and warranty coverage may be separate. Compare the complete installed price, not just the advertised pack price.

How can I tell whether my Tesla needs a full battery replacement?
Get a diagnostic estimate and ask whether the fault is in the complete pack or a component such as a contactor, fuse, controller, busbar or disconnect. Some high-voltage faults can be repaired without replacing the entire battery.
The bottom line
For a U.S. Tesla owner, a realistic budget for an out-of-warranty full-pack replacement is $10,000–$20,000 or more, with Model 3 repairs often around $10,000–$16,000 and older Model S repairs potentially above $20,000. But a battery warning is not proof the entire pack has failed, and warranty coverage can reduce a qualifying repair to $0.
Check Tesla app → Service → View estimate, verify warranty coverage under Specs & Warranty, and ask for the complete installed cost and replacement type before approving work.
