Doccla’s headline-making “$17 million” was an approximate dollar conversion of a £15 million Series A reported in September 2022—not a recent funding announcement. The company’s virtual wards are NHS-arranged services that let selected patients receive hospital-level care at home, with monitoring and treatment overseen by a clinical team.

What was Doccla’s funding round?

In September 2022, Doccla raised £15 million in a Series A round, described at the time as approximately $17 million. Doccla’s media archive lists contemporary coverage of the round; the available record here is not a primary financing announcement, so the pound amount and date are the clearest way to describe it. Doccla’s media archive

The round was intended to support a company operating in remote patient monitoring. The historical headline should not be read as evidence of a new raise or as a current valuation, revenue figure, or measure of the company’s present financial position.

What is a virtual ward?

A virtual ward is an NHS care model, not simply a health app or a set of consumer wearables. NHS England described it as an alternative to bedded hospital care: patients who would otherwise be admitted receive acute care, monitoring and treatment at home, while a clinical team manages their care remotely through a digital platform.

How Doccla’s service works

Doccla describes its offering as an end-to-end service for health systems, combining remote-monitoring technology with operational and clinical support. Depending on the service arranged by the referring organisation, it can include:

These components are part of a care pathway: observations are collected so a clinical team can monitor a patient and respond within the service’s clinical workflow. The platform is therefore not equivalent to buying a monitor and using it without a care team. Doccla’s descriptions of its platform and services are company statements. Doccla

Who can use a Doccla virtual ward?

Doccla says its service is for patients referred by NHS organisations, not a service the general public can join independently. Its accessibility statement says: “The service is only for use by patients who have been referred to it by the NHS—it is not open to the public generally.” Access may be through a patient’s own Android or iOS device, or through a managed device supplied by Doccla. That distinction matters if you are looking for a product to buy: the funding story does not point to a consumer gadget or a public sign-up. Devices and app access are arranged within the referred service. Doccla

The NHS context behind the expansion

Doccla’s funding arrived as the NHS was expanding virtual wards. NHS England’s 2022 evidence described a planning ambition of 40–50 virtual ward beds per 100,000 people by March 2024. Its December 2021 planning guidance made up to £200 million available to systems in 2022/23 and up to £250 million in 2023/24; the evidence said £198 million flowed to systems in 2022/23. These are historical programme figures, not current funding allocations. NHS England’s written evidence to Parliament

The model is a partnership effort: local design may involve acute hospitals, community teams, social care, mental health services and independent providers. What the early results do—and do not—show

NHS England’s 2022 evidence cited local examples, including reductions of up to 60% in emergency admissions for COPD and heart failure where care was digitally supported, and a 33% reduction in ambulance call-outs in one care-home example. The evidence characterised these findings as early, local and based on relatively small populations; they should not be treated as guaranteed results, national averages, or proof of Doccla-specific impact.

NHS England also cautioned that “For the national virtual wards programme, evaluation is just beginning.” It said evidence on equity of access and outcomes remained limited. That distinction is important: promising local examples explain interest in the model, but do not settle how outcomes compare across populations or services. NHS England’s written evidence to Parliament

Doccla separately publishes company-reported service figures and a named local outcome claim, including a reported 34% reduction in non-elective admissions attributed to BNSSG ICB in 2024. That is a company-published, geographically specific example, not independent evidence of national impact. Doccla

What this means for patients and health systems

For patients, a virtual ward may make it possible to receive selected hospital-level care without staying in a hospital bed, but eligibility and care arrangements depend on the referring NHS organisation and its pathway. For health systems, the decision is broader than choosing a software platform: it involves clinical responsibility, escalation procedures, workforce, device logistics, accessibility, record integration and evaluation of outcomes.

Doccla’s 2022 funding is best understood as investment in a health-system service model combining technology and care operations. It is not a consumer health product announcement, and the early evidence on virtual wards should be read with its stated limits.
