Steam does not publish one universal code length or character pattern, so a code’s appearance alone cannot confirm that it is valid or genuine.
What a Steam gift card code is
Steam describes Wallet codes as unique codes that work like gift certificates: once redeemed, their value can be used for games, software, and other items sold on Steam. Physical cards and digital gifts are different

Steam Support shows examples of physical card designs, including older cards labeled “2019 and earlier.” Those illustrations do not establish a current, universal design or code format. The reviewed Steam pages do not specify a fixed number of characters, a canonical string pattern, or separate fixed patterns for physical and digital gifts. Do not rely on a listing photo or visual pattern as proof that a code is safe to redeem.
How to redeem a code safely
- Sign in to your Steam account and open Steam’s official Wallet code redemption page.
- Enter the code as shown on the card or in the gift details, then submit it through Steam.
- After redemption, the value is converted to the currency of your Steam Wallet, regardless of where the card was purchased. The balance can be used for items available on Steam. Steam Wallet FAQ
If your Steam Wallet code does not work
- Compare look-alike characters carefully. Steam lists these common confusions: 0 with O, Q, or D; 1 with I; B with 8; and G with 6. Steam Wallet FAQ
- If you bought the card at a retailer, activation may take several hours, according to Steam Support.
- If the issue persists, contact Steam Support and provide a clear image of the entire card back along with the matching retail receipt, as requested in its troubleshooting guidance. Steam Wallet FAQ
Protect the code from gift-card scams
Anyone who obtains an exposed code may be able to redeem its value. Steam warns about callers or messages pretending to be authorities or official agents and demanding cards for taxes, bail, debts, delivery of money, or supposed sweepstakes winnings. A request to scratch the card and read or send the code is a warning sign: Steam says never to give a Wallet gift card to someone you do not know. Steam Support: Gift Card Scams

Be cautious in trades, too. Steam says someone offering payment for a trade with a digital Steam gift card may send a fake code, reverse a card charge, or use a card purchased with fraudulent details. Steam Support: Scams and Trading
The FTC gives broader gift-card advice: inspect cards before buying because scammers may tamper with protective stickers or scratch the back to obtain numbers. That is general consumer guidance, not a claim that every Steam card is affected. FTC: Gift Card Scams
